I seen this TV for the first time yesterday it looks so Sharp, Mits even added some new glass that helps make the TV get brighter and and the blacks darker. I still think I will wait at leat 5 years before I upgrade from the 82inch that I have now. But this TV is looks amazing. Another cool thing is all the 3D stuff is built into the TV you don't even need a emitter.

All you people who have the 72 inch and up Mitsus:

STOP TEASING ME AND TELLING ME ABOUT YOUR GIANT SCREENS!!!

Honestly, all kidding aside, I wish I could do one of these; I would do it in a heartbeat -- even the 82 like you have, Mirage. But yeah, the 92 is a monster...we saw it at an electronics chain near us, RC Willey, and you really need the right kind of room to put this thing in...

I hear there are prototype 100+inch plasmas and LCDs from companies like LG and Panasonic, but they're like beyond unaffordable even if they were ready to be sold...

after 80 inches or so - not going the projection route is just silly.

Why is that? Some people have the wall space for a larger screen, but don't have the right set up for a projector(like myself).

a 92 inch TV would be a heck of a lot more arduous to fit in a room than a 92 inch screen and a projector on a shelf in the back of the room.

Most LCD projectors today are very flexible with placement. Try to imagine moving a 92 inch tv...anywhere. Or the tv stand you need for it.

not to mention - if you want a screen that big, for basically the same cost you could go even bigger. Or smaller, if you move into a place with smaller rooms.
Moving a 65 inch tv around is a big enough pain in the butt.

A shelf in the back of the room? Well, that'd be nice, but the back of the room is my couch up against the wall...

Sweeeeeeeeeeet Grif....I would love one of these too -- and I totally agree about having a TV screen instead of the projector based on the room one has; in both of our cases, a TV screen makes sense, so I don't see any harm in getting one this large versus getting a projector and screen...

Is this the Panny that is only available via their commercial networks (Panasonic)?

In my particular case, the "stand" is really a low-boy cabinet that is part of a wall unit, and this cabinet can easily "hold" something in the 92 inch range; the problem is making the remainder of the wall unit fit around it! There would need to be some custom woodwork done...

What part of NY are you in?

live in New Paltz, work in Manhattan.

I understand the allure of having something near front projection size that performs much better in a bright room. But then again, I don't own, I rent - so I move a lot. Putting a shelf above the couchh on the backwall isn't too much of pain, I think.
I have to admit the 80inch Sharp Elites sound tempting - but man oh man the price.

New Paltz...where exactly is that? Is that north of Westchester?

I'm originally from Nassau County... Worked a bit in Manhattan as well, and did some time at a prep school there before attending college at Hofstra -- The Dwight School.

There are some people that just prefer the direct-display/television type setup; my wife and I are some of these people. Don't get me wrong -- I wouldn't move out of a house that had a 20-row tiered basement dedicated theater with 60,000 watts of power from 20 amplifiers and a 200 inch screen...but to me, there's something so majestic and humble about a living room with a nice sized television screen, installed in a very cozy method (wall unit/flush mounted screen, etc.). For a great example of what I mean, check out this member of Blu-ray.com's theater -- a member I feel has one of the nicest, if not THE nicest, setups on here, albeit the "cabin" motif is an acquired taste:

http://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=...ch&um=1&itbs=1

Now THAT is what I call a nice home theater -- huge TV screen, flush mounted in the wall, etc...

Yeah, that's the one thing about huge TV screens...they are just so damn expensive...have you seen the massive plasmas and other displays from companies like Runco, who normally make projectors? These things are ridiculously huge and also EXPENSIVE -- you need a second mortgage to buy one of these.

One of these companies -- I think it's Runco -- has something called a CineWall or something like that; it's a self-powered, self-projecting display of some kind that acts like a movie theater screen but is more like a TV in that it doesn't need a projector...really wild. I wish I could afford one.

But those Sharp Elities I did hear about -- at a local Best Buy I was looking at the 70" Sharp and drooling. The sales chick told me they had an 80" version but not at this store; I didn't realize how expensive they were.

Yeah, Runco is out of my range. Wife would slaughter me if I ever spent more than $4k on a display.

What did you think of that member's 70" SXRD in the flush mount?

Just wait until this year at CES guys.Panasonic will be releasing larger plasmas and I really hope they go to 80 inches and not just 75.Sharp does not make quality tv's sorry to say.

Read reviews on the other tv's besides the 80 inch made by sharp they have motion blur and pix elation issues.

I saw the elite in store last week and it still has the same crappy viewing angles all lcd's have i cant stand if i move around and picture changes ughhh.I know the tv has to be properly calibrated but i didn't notice a difference in store between elite and other lcd's.

the next hopefully 80 inch panasonic Vt plasma>>>>>>>>>>sharp elite

Thanks Jack,

If that's the case then I will definitely attend CES and check out what's coming -- are you sure those Sharp LCDs really don't look all that good? We were really almost thinking of pulling the trigger on the 70" model...

Also, while Panasonic may be coming out with gigantic plasmas and such for their consumer end, what will the prices be like? Ordinary people still can't spend 10K and up on a display...

I have the 72 inch DLP in my living room and have been thinking about upgrading. They seem to lower every year in cost so I've been holding off until it gets to under $4,000. I have also been debating with myself about the 80 inch Sharp, which I think has a slightly better picture. My living room couldn't have a regular projector setup since its open and closing the light off would mess up the way the house looks, that's what my basement is for.

What is wrong with the 72? Is it too small for you?

To us, a 70" would seem like a huge jump from a 50"...I don't think we can go any higher than a 70, if that at all.

I'm curious, though, to learn more about the differences between the Mitsubishi DLPs and the Sharp LCDs; is the picture that much better on the Sharps?

When I bought the 72" the 82" and 92" weren't out yet, well the 82" was just coming out but no store had them around here for a few months. I replaced a 60 inch Philips CRT with the 72" and it was a pretty big leap, since the 60 inch was a 4x3 TV, which made the widescreen viewable area around 50 inches or so. I personally would prefer to just have a pull down screen, but family and friends like the look and features of a tv over a projector since they use it for viewing sports and regular programming during daytime hours. They want a TV that is near my projector size, so that's their quirk. I think the 72" is wonderful and for practical purposes I would hold off until its near death before upgrading, but I think the choice will be taken away from me. Of course I'll find some use for it and be glad I upgraded...LOL.

HH Gregg had all three models and the Sharp next to each other and I found that the picture of the Sharp looked more vivid. I thought the 92" looked off, like the picture was stretched awkwardly even though it wasn't. It reminded me of how things look through a fishbowl. I also wasn't crazy about the plastic looking covering on it. It didn't have the same smooth glass look like the Sharp had. If I had to upgrade tomorrow, I'd either go with the 82" DLP or the 80" Sharp. The smaller DLP had a better picture on it, it looked more natural. Unless the 92" was just a bad unit, I'd really have to see it in action in a better circumstance as it kinda left me...meh. Still, I found the Sharp the best overall. They had Revenge of The Fallen playing on the sets and it looked just downright spectacular on the Sharp.

As with anything, it's pretty much personal preference. I hate those TVs that make everything look like a PS3 game, but some love those cinema motion features. I'd go look at them and get a feel for the different displays.

Interesting analysis; I too found the images on the 70" Sharp at a local BB to be pretty eye-catching, but I happen to like the look of LCD at any rate. With the Mitsubishis, it's a weird thing...depending on where I've seen them set up and displayed, the picture quality is either atrocious or good -- but never ridiculously great. That's why I was so concerned about purchasing one of these because I have a rear projection set now, and while my Sony SXRD is nice, I am wondering if one of the Mitsubishis -- more than likely the smallest 72 or 73", whatever it is -- would yield a great improvement in viewing experience save for the massively larger screen...
