A fair amount of the old Looney Tunes compilations on iTunes have now been upgraded to HD.

I checked out of the preview of "Daffy Duck and the Dinosaur," but the iTunes version has less picture on the sides of the frame than the HBO Max version.

Pretty sure that's the only one.

I have all 3 of the platinum collections. I've been wanting to get the golden collections to compliment them, but im having trouble trying to track them all down. Ebay is littered with bootlegs of the boxset, which is what i'd like to have, but finding a real one is hard. I've seen some that look a bit more real, but i can't be sure.

I want to say that the big boxset of all six volumes was only in print for a short amount of time meaning the majority of them still on the internet are most likely bootlegs. You're likely better off tracking down each individual volume if you want to be absolutely sure you're getting legit copies. It looks like all the individual volumes are still in print. I see copies on ebay that have a Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary sticker on the cover which would make them from last year. Otherwise, used copies of the original pressings should be fairly easy to find.

My general rule of thumb when buying stuff from ebay is to only look at listings which have a unique photo of the set and avoid sellers that have more than one copy available and/or have other out of print sets for sale.

(If you really want the box, then I suppose you could try getting the cheapest bootleg on ebay and send the discs back for a refund while keeping the box but I have zero experience with that stuff.)

Thanks for the advice. I only really wanted the boxset version if it was a good deal. Im fine with the singles. Barnes and Noble has the reissued of 1-4 on sale at the moment. I found a good deal for the 5 and 6 reissued on amazon canada but they won't ship to the us sadly. 5 and 6 are listed as backordered on several sites. It seems they reissued them all last year so I doubt they would leave print so quick, likely covid slowing down getting stuff reprinted.

Shoot, glad this was brought up. I bought one of those boxsets on eBay last week (to be delivered today!) thinking I'd be finally adding these sets to my library, and due to their age didn't perceive the ~$50 prices as a red flag... wrong. Buyer beware!

Does anyone know why the LTSS Sylvester/Hippety Hopper disc has been selling for hundreds of dollars on ebay now? This was a $5 bargain bin disc until recently.

All the classic Looney Tunes Blu-ray releases I know of (Platinum Vol. 1-3, Mouse Chronicles, Bugs Bunny 80th Anniversary) are region free.

et

Not selling high any longer. Listed high, but not selling high.
Background...
OOP. OOS. Most pre 1970 cartoons are in fact in serious danger of being lost forever from many types of threats. In this case speculators were working off unfounded rumor. Could be anything that triggers it. This one actually has no foundation or principle. Probably one single public comment by one random, but influential cancel culture leader who has financial backing and a couple of lawyers. Bots likely made the purchases. Very few were sold above the normal price. Others are listed high now, but are not selling, just in case the bots come back to buy again.

Disclaimer...
I have a pretty big vintage cartoon collection now as a result of my belief that long term, these old toons are not going to become easy to purchase in unedited format with many working towards being permanently locked in a studio vault. I have no direct knowledge of the subject, and in fact am also speculating, only not for financial gain. My copies will remain firmly planted on my shelves for the remainder of my lifetime. I will not be buying multiples of anything. I will not be supporting procrastinators who miss out at the retail level. Readers are entitled to draw their own conclusions. I have said my piece, I rest my case.

Looking at the bids they do look suspicious at best and fraudulent at worst. Still, it's very strange for this specific release to spike like this, I can't think of anything remotely controversial in these cartoons and I think most of them are on HBO Max in HD.
If anything you'd think the Golden Collection would be spiking since it contains cartoons WB doesn't seem willing to touch anymore, but I guess this is one situation where the rampant bootlegging actually helps keep prices down.

My guess is that it's not in print anymore and there's fewer copies of it in circulation due to being a less popular release. WB reissued the Superstars dvds in three pack sets a few years ago but I don't think the Hippety Hopper disc was included with them.

Is there any reason to go for the Region 1 Golden Collections or am I fine getting the UK ones?

The UK Golden Collections are missing a few shorts and special features. I think it's about 7 and only from volume 4 if memory serves. All the missing special features and some of the shorts are included in the Platinum Collections though, but not quite all the shorts.

The missing shorts on the R2 version of Volume 4 are:
Southern Fried Rabbit
You're An Education
Plane Daffy
Porky the Fireman
The Stupid Cupid
Here Today, Gone Tamale
The Sour Puss

Southern Fried Rabbit stings since it's unlikely WB will release that again on another format anytime soon. (it was included on the R1 Golden Carrot Collection DVD set but only because it was just a reprint of the Golden Collection discs focused on Bugs Bunny)
