Oh of interest, what have you adjusted?

I have made all my tweaks on the "Cinema Night" mode.

Contrast is at 38. Brightness and colour saturation at 50. Backlight at 19. Aspect ratio direct. I've basically turned everything off that tinkers with the picture other than Local Dimming which I left on as it improves the black levels a whole lot. Gamma at the ITU.1886 thing (no idea what this is, but it provides the best blacks).

I've also made a lot of tweaks to the colours to try and offset the redness of the picture. I put the colour temperature on cool. In the Red setting I've minused the hue by three and the saturation by seven and the same on Magenta.

I have white balance at 2 point, as I have no clue what 10 point is. Set to auto as native is far too red. I've minused eight off of the red gain and one off of blue and green.

Still not perfect, on more cartoony things like Overwatch everything has the same shade as a raw, smacked, bottom but for movies and so on this does seem to offset a lot of the problems.

The only thing i noticed was the 'Reds' seemed very grainy so i went into Colour tuner and turned the red down to -5 and it looks a lot better. i think these Tvs can look great but they need a lot of colour adjustments to get a bettre picture especially the colour Red for some reason.

I dunno whether the light uniformity issue on my TV is getting worse or I am just tuning into it and therefore noticing it more but it is starting to become a real problem for me.

On my old TV it was bad because it was this big blob like patch which hung centre stage in the middle of any bright sequence, making it look like my TV was really dirty. On this TV it is different, here the light uniformity is in strips that run from the top to the bottom of the TV, all the way across. These strips are in varying degrees of thickness but there are more of these light strips than there are the darker TV screen between them and I have noticed some blobs now as well. Unlike on my old TV where the light uniformity problems only showed up on brightly lit, tracking shots across solid colours on this TV I can see it almost all the time and like I say I dunno whether it is just the result of me tuning into it but I seem to be seeing it more and more frequently and I don’t know whether the strips are growing and these blobs are new or am I just starting to notice more and more but I don’t remember it being this bad when I first got the TV.

I have mentioned this to my friend and he says with all the other problems a panel could have, an issue like this is not worth the gamble of swapping this for a different panel and potentially opening a whole can of worms of new problems but it is still frustrating.

I also have to say that I don’t know whether it is just the result of the PS4 adding HDR onto games that aren’t actually in 4K (as I don’t have a PS4 Pro, although that isn’t even native 4K itself) but I feel like the TV looks considerably worse with HDR on that it does with it off.

I got a question. No idea if it'll be answered given this thread isn't very active but I thought I'd give it a go. On my Hisense there is a mode called "Ultra Smooth Motion" I have left it off as a) it looks weird with it on and b) thats what everyone tells you to do. My question is though that when you turn it off it says that the TV will display content as 24 Frames a second. So does that mean whatever is being fed into the TV is being throttled into 24 frames, or is that saying as standard and if something is running at higher frames then it'll be displayed accordingly.

I ask as I am thinking about getting a gaming PC and I am thinking about using my TV as a monitor as my TV is great and monitors are tiny and very expensive. However if my gaming PC is going to get throttled and forced into 24 frames no matter what content I am feeding into its, that always defeats half the point.

If it does turn out that my TV is throttling does that mean this TV is completely non viable for gaming? Does that mean I can "unlock" higher frame rates by putting Ultra Smooth Motion on or is that just artificially replicating higher frames and not actually presenting high frame rates?

Hisense 43R7E 43 Inch Roku TV is on sale at Best Buy for 219.99 I just grabbed on for my a couple weeks ago and it's nice for that purpose. Supports Dolby Vision although considering how low Peak brightness is that may not matter much to you. Either way it's a good deal.

So, how is the Hisense Roku?

Tempted by how cheap it is with all the included apps. Not too fussed about 4K quality as it's just for the bedroom, more concerned with general picture quality. If it's going to be shockingly bad compared to the B8 OLED downstairs, I'll leave it.

For low ambient light viewing, like bedrooms, OLED perform best and all LCD TVs perform worst. Can you consider moving the B8 to the bedroom where it will look better than ever and buy the new TV for the downstairs room.

Nope, I'm capped at around 43" (sloping loft ceiling) for space which rules out ALL of the current best TVs, so compromises have to be made. Was going to wait to see what new models come out as the newer tech filters down to smaller sizes, but the 8 year old LG LM620T I have up there is starting to show signs of LED or board failure so I might not have the luxury of waiting anymore.

If the Hisense Roku will give me better picture quality over an 8 year old LG (albeit no 3D), then for the price (£249 locally for the 43" B7120) and all the apps it'd be a good stop gap. I can cope with slightly elevated blacks from LED technology, it's black uniformity and edge-lit issues that annoys me. I think the Hisense Roku is direct lit?

Regardless, the B8 aint moving, I still love it exactly where it is.

Given my limitations, I'd be curious what you would recommend, Robert? In addition, I'd need an included stand to put it above the Sony ZF9's 64mm height.

Obvious contender is the Q60x range, but the big compromises for the high asking price have me wanting to run a mile.

Vizio isn't available locally, which is a massive shame give they have a 43" budget TV that gets good reviews.

Panasonic (which is available locally) have some interesting looking 2020 models, but given a lack of good reviews right now I'm wondering if they will just end up making similar compromises to Samsung at that size.

Sony - again, a high asking price for compromised quality at the 43" size range - all edge lit on this years new 43" models as far as I can tell.

LG edge-lits are a big no-no, I've seen first hand how poor they've got. My last main TV was retired prematurely because it was an edge-lit LG that annoyed the life out of me.

I do want a good SMART platform including Apple which is filtering down through most brands now, so I don't have to clutter the bedroom up with extra dongles and boxes for everything I might use.

eARC would be a nice bonus given the ZF9 is eARC compatible.

I haven't totally ruled out the CX 48" Given the LM620T has a fatter frame than OLED which is taking up more space and the CX series is as good as frameless, I do wonder if I can just squeeze it in with some creativity... Compromise the room and not the TV quality.

Can't seem to find height and width measurements at the moment though, just early reviews.

If picture quality is your desire, then it's clearly LG's 48" CX Series OLED TV. Here's the dimensions:

Ack, height on stand might be a slight issue with my soundbar. Not insurmountable, but would be a shame to lose the nice stock stand.

Father bought a 55" Hisense H8F yesterday afternoon as an "emergency replacement" for his old 1080P LG LCD that burned out early yesterday morning. He was looking at an edge-lit, HDR10-only LG LCD for the same price --- he insisted it had to be under $450 --- but I eventually talked him out of the generic LG, did research and ended up going with this model instead.

My first choice for him was a TCL 5-series but it wasn't in stock at any Best Buy in our area. Unfortunately, he absolutely needed it that day. Logged into RTings and it seemed they really liked this set so we ended up going for it.

After helping him with the setup and calibration, I'm pleasantly surprised by the H8F. I had very few expectations going in but it checked most of the boxes. The only problem is...his pet peeve is "black bars on his movies", and Android TV's aspect ratio/crop/stretch feature isn't as good as LG's various zoom and aspect ratio features. In fact, those features are greyed out/disabled while watching 4K content. I'm not sure why. He wasn't very happy when I told him the bad news, so hopefully this pushes him toward watching movies in their OAR.

I personally have a 2018 LG B8 OLED and this won't be replacing it anytime soon. But as an inexpensive upgrade for my dad, who normally watches news, sports and a blu-ray once every week, it certainly impressed me. I'm concerned about the brand's reliability, even compared to TCL, but I'm glad they had enough of a balance between casual and videophile sensibilities in an inexpensive package.

I was also looking at either the H8G or H9G at first, but lack of HDMI 2.1 or even at least a couple of features like eARC and VRR makes Hisense as a brand this year a dealbreaker for me. And yes, I'm looking to get the Xbox Series X as early as next year at least and PS5 2-3 years later down the road for its 1st/2nd party games in case you're wondering.

@Zoland2020, Sony's X900H is a very good match for your needs and if you want an OLED TV, LG's CX series would be a good choice.
