To me, there are levels of "Not meant to be taken seriously" in horror films. There's the Mel Brooks/Monty Python/Zucker-Abrahams level where Scary Movie/Bloody Murder/Don't Go In The Woods/Munchies etc, live. It's not meant to be taken seriously in ANY measure, especially the horror.

Then there's the "We know we're writing bullshit, but it's still Horror!" level, where most 80's and 90's horror and slasher movies fall. All of the Friday the 13th films fall here. Yes, whether intentional or not, they have camp and satire, but the horror (particularly in the original four) is always taken seriously and that separates it, for me, from the total bullshit area.

Why I placed Jason X and FvsJ in the worst category (Though I still love them) is that it is the closest the series has gotten to pure slapstick, where even the "horror" can't be taken seriously. Fun kills, yes, but when Jason is the one being funny with the kills, there's a problem. "Invite only, cornpoke. And you weren't invite...."

But I can't really be mad or blame the filmmakers for eventually going this route with Jason, because after so many films they all become parodies of themselves in one film or another, and all the long running icons went through it.

When I watched The Final Chapter last year I felt like the movie was always about to turn into a porno. All the ridiculous dialogue and constant talk about sex and skinny dipping made it feel like that. It didn’t seem like a real movie to me. Even though Part 5 has about the same level of nudity, it was more entertaining because of the humor and the characters’ personalities.
To be honest, that's nearly all the raunchy 80's teen sex comedies. If you're not a fan of those, then I certainly understand how that could be an issue in Friday films. But yeah, I totally understand the preference of Parts 3 and 5 over TFC from your perspective and I certainly respect it.

Quote:
I’ll give Part 4 another watch to see if my opinion changes because how you described it sounds appealing to me.

It's never my intent to change anyone's opinion on any topic. I just try to explain my point of view and why I see it the way *I* do. And if you view the series a particular way, that's never going to change, and perhaps it should not. The fact that we're still watching the films and still talking about them, for good or bad, can only be a positive thing for this franchise and all the others we're still debating about.

Quote:
As for the worst in the series, I’d have to give that honor to Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X. It’s amazing how terrible those films are. I’ll never watch them again.
I can certainly understand that. Though with JGTH, I give it points for trying to do something different and add some other colors to the series (Not just throwing Jason in a different setting like JX or JTM.) But yeah, I really could have done without the old uninspired "Sister/Niece" angle and the body hopping should have been done a different way regarding the transference and how we *saw* the possessed (we, the audience, should have seen Jason in full during those scenes and saw the human person in reflection, though the characters would see the reverse as shown in the film.) And Jason Voorhees is not a Deadite, no matter what Adam Marcus says.

But that ship has sailed. They are what they are and I'm more accepting of JGTH than I am of Jason X.

Quote:
The other day I watched the remake for the first time since seeing it in theaters, and I see why it didn’t do well. It’s just the same sh*t with nothing new added. There were parts I thought were okay but it’s very forgettable.
I am with you on this, completely. I blame Platinum Dunes and the writers Shannon & Swift for only taking the tropes of the series and dumbing them up even more (which S&S also did in FvsJ.) But, Derek Mears as Jason is the film's highlight and I enjoy all the stuff regarding him and the character. I'm fine with Jason holding the hostage and adding some torture aspects because, as I mentioned with JGTH, they tried something different at least, in that respect. And they attempted to make him scary again (for those who were ever scared of him, anyways), many points for that.

Quote:
If they ever want to reboot the series again they better do something really original and different; otherwise it’ll just be the same as the remake and not do well at the box office. I wonder if it’s possible to make a Friday film that clicks with audiences the way the new Halloween film did.
I think it can be done. But it's gonna take someone who respects the material (even if they find it less than stellar), knows what works for the franchise on the base-level and doesn't just view the series clichés as the thing to play up and overdo (which was exactly what Friday 09 did.) It can be done, it just takes the right people. Say what you will about the video game, but the makers *got* Friday the 13th and was able to translate the right tone to the digital medium.

I still do feel this way to a certain extent.

However, I've come to appreciate the humor in the series a lot more since then and the films work so much better than a vast majority of the Halloween films simply because of that fact. They're all quite ridiculous, but they're aware of how stupid they are and they often play to that advantage and it saves the series in the end.

There's also a really good commentary for part 3 (albeit rather poorly recorded) with the cast that was included in the Crystal Lake to Manhattan DVD boxset. It was never carried over to any subsequent release of part 3 so it's still exclusive to that collection. If you haven't heard it, it's definitely worth tracking down as it's one of the best commentaries for any film in the series and is a lot of fun to listen to.

~Matt
It’s stuff like what you mentioned that really irritates me. The part about a part 3 commentary track not being ported over from the DVD. I would love to listen to it... but I’m certainly not buying a DVD version. So frustrating that they couldn’t just port it over to the Blu.

well part 3 is a great film i think. it's i think the characters, with i believe Chris talking about getting away from jason and than she finds out it's the same guy she ran away from like the year or two before. i love that and though you would say he would have killed her and you'd no doubt be right but it worked for the film i think. part 3 also has some of my favorite kills like the head squeezing eye popping FX that yeah you can tell is fake but

it was done for 3D of course, i've got a really shitty 3D copy of the 3D version and i can't watch it cause like it's been said i get a really huge ****ing headache after about 10 seconds. but than i love the first four the most and part 5 like i said holds a special place in my heart as well.

i don't honestly remember what the 1st one i saw was though. but i think it was maybe around part 6 or 7 when i got into the films when those came to VHS i mean back in the day

Completely agree. If they can make Halloween relevant and good this past year...they should be able to do it for a Friday also. But you are correct, it’s going to take a great team that understands what made the original movies so great. And yes... they could learn a thing or two from studying the video game. It is so atmospheric and the details are right with what the originals were like. Terrific visuals too. Find a director and writer like this and Friday can certainly come back as a new theatrical release.

So slightly thicker, like a UK-sized case?

There needs to be a 13th film. Fans as far back as the late 80's have wondered what the mythological 13th film could be (I believe it was even mentioned in the old Fangoria Terror Teletype.) I know Frank Mancuso Jr was asked years ago in Fango about it and he said something to the effect of he and Sean Cunningham would have to come together and make it special. So if this franchise were to end, it should be at 13.

I’m rewatching 1-8 in order. Almost done with part 4 now.

It used to be one of my favorites, but I’m finding myself not feeling the love for it as much as I used to. I know this is an unpopular opinion, but that’s just how I felt while watching it.

It’s not a bad movie or anything.., and I do like it. It’s just that the characters for the most part seem pretty shallow compared to the preceding three movies. Also, I can’t get over the guy getting killed by Jason in the basement and continuously screaming that he’s being killed. Not to mention he somehow still finds the ability to speak in general during a massive attack by Jason.

I do still enjoy Crispin Glover’s dancing of course. I think the final matchup scene vs Jason is still done well, and the twist conclusion.

As I said, I still like the movie and it’s miles better than many or most that would follow.

Right now I would rank it the lowest of the first 4 movies.

Anyone else feel this way?

Agree. You can’t just end this franchise on number 12. There HAS to be a 13th film. And it needs to obviously be one of the best ones. It deserves that.

This was my initial reaction when I saw it for the very first time. Over the years I came to appreciate it a lot more. But what you described happened to me with part 3. I liked it a lot on my first viewing, but it declined radically over the years.

Yeah, I always thought that was a bit odd. I just rewatched all 8 films this week as well, concluding last night with Jason Takes Manhattan.

Part IV was the first I saw in theaters. Part III will always be my favorite. Has two of my favorite kills, Walking on hands and Wallet in lake. Plus Jason gets his hockey mask. I was a goaltender on a roller hockey team when I was younger. So I really love seeing him with the mask on for the first time. And the way he just makes his first kill (mask on) so nonchalantly. Love it!
