Part 3 and 4 are aces. Along with part 6 I'd say that's the best three in the franchise.

I can see why Part 4 is a fan favourite with Savini's effects and in 1984 where porn wasn't just a google search away almost a solid hour of tits was probably a real rush but when there isn't anything to really hang any of this off it's just dull. Well it's dull for me anyway.

It isn't like the first three films were incredible character dramas or had rich narratives but there was an attempt to at least make the victims more than topless bodies and at least an attempt to provide motivation for the kills and to actually drive the film with some sense of story. Part 3 doesn't really, I know, but I enjoyed the 3D gimmickry so much I just didn't mind.

The series loses the gore special effects for the kill scenes after part 4. That's my biggest gripe about the later films.
in my opinion the first Friday the 13th and 2nd lord over the rest of the franchise. They are two of the finest horror movies ever made and belong in that top tier of all time great horror movies. Atmosphere, actors, direction, script, effects all combine to make something perfect

After that you have 3, 4 and 6 in the second tier. All worthy sequels and each delivers on multiple levels yet they lack that special mix of ingredients that would make them classics.

Then you have rest which is a very mixed bag. I enjoy them all. They hold a special place in my heart.

Agreed.

The first two films, in my opinion, are the only pure horror movies of the series, because they have an element of mystery to them with regard to the killers, and because they both have a truly gritty aesthetic that suits the story and the location settings.

The Final Chapter is my third favorite film of the franchise, but the rough-around-the-edges feel of the first two films puts them in a higher plane altogether.

That said, I have no regrets whatsoever about my decision to purchase the complete box set, as opposed to owning only the first two films. Even the worst films in the franchise are still a blast.

I just don't understand all the love for Jason Lives. I like part 6 the least out of all the Friday the 13th films from the Paramount years. Part 5 gets hated on way too hard in my opinion. My top 3 would be part 3,4, and 2.

So that's weird, Jason finally gets a resume feature with Part 5 and the movie picks up in some random place half an hour after I stopped the film?

No, it's mostly the relatable characters, genuine sense of suspense, and terrific final reel. Oh and Ted White, the best Jason there will ever be.

I found the characters non existent in part 4, bodies who floated around Jason's orbit... just because. I also found zero suspense in part 4 as Jason basically became a jump scare, there was far more suspense and much better realised characters in the first two films.

All of the movies after Friday the 13th: Part 2 meet the above description. They're still fun movies, of course, and many of them still feature likeable characters (The Final Chapter and The New Blood, in particular). It's just that any real suspense regarding the characters is absent, because we know that Jason himself is the central character.

The Friday the 13th movies lost their horror edge when Jason found the hockey mask. After that, everything revolved around that iconic image.

I still love the rest of the franchise after the first two movies for different reasons, simply because they are fun roller coaster rides, but the scares are just that...amusement park scares. The post-Part 2 movies are like the local charity haunted house where the creators try to change the scares and up the ante every year, but the customers always know what to expect in general terms. We still love visiting the Friday the 13th movies year after year, though, just as we still live visiting those haunted houses and roller coaster rides year after year.

The Final Chapter is the most well-made movie of the series from a technical standpoint, because the filmmakers had a higher budget with which to make things happen (crane camera shots, improved makeup effects, etc.). The film is a blast in this sense, because everyone was at their A-game.

The Final Chapter is not scary like the comparably crude first two films are, but it's my third favorite movie of the series because of its technical merits.

I definitely agree with this. Friday's 1 and 2 are rather good films, my two favorite of the franchise. I enjoy part 4 also but like you said, it's for different reasons. The cinematography is nice given the bigger budget this film received. I like the gory scenes myself but, of course that's my opinion.

Same here - The Final Chapter has one of the better final chases in the franchise, and the whole clean-up in the barn at the beginning is nice. Jason's also quite physically menacing, without going into the whole wrestler routine that we saw from The New Blood and onwards. What's not to like? CANADA and LOVE!

I didn't like 4 when I was a kid. It had a sleazy, mean vibe that I don't think the first 3 had. Over time it's become a favorite- all the chaos and one of the best Jason's, but I still don't care much for the cast of characters.

I think the mask works and is creepy in 3 & 4. Once it became something that he always has to have/ always finds is when it becomes kind of dumb IMO.

Part 5 has a sleazy mean vibe throughout. Part 4 has Corey feldman and is anything but sleazy or mean. Part 4 is arguably one of the best parts in the franchise.
