Arguing with other Friday the 13th fans about the merits of certain movies in the series is like mud wrestling with a pig. After a while, you realize that the pig is enjoying it.

Even when people's opinions on certain movies are vastly different from mine, it's fun to read their posts and to appreciate the logic of why they feel the way that they feel about the movies. I have a higher opinion of The Final Chapter than Pizzamorg does, for example, but I understand his thought process regarding the film. There is also a handful of people here who consider my least-favorite film in the franchise, Jason Goes to Hell, to be their favorite, and I always like reading their thoughts.

I just wanted an excuse to say CANADA and LOVE.

That said, the Friday films are pretty formulaic, but I think every Friday fan can name his favourite and least favourite Fridays. And maybe even their favourite and least favourite Jason (my favourite *gasp* isn't Kane Hodder). One can always try to explain one's personal preferences, but with these movies, they'll be just that, personal preferences. You can certainly argue that Jason Lives is a technically better movie than Jason Takes Manhattan, but there are no doubt those that enjoy JTM more.

Just watched Part 5: A New Beginning - I'd give it a 6.5

I can understand why people might not enjoy this film, to go from the style and tone of the last instalment (one considered by many fans to be a highlight of the franchise) into this film which is practically the polar opposite utilising elements of screwball comedies with far less on screen violence (and a massive tone down of the brutality of the violence) but I dunno, I dug it.

It's freeing to not know who the killer is again and this is clearly also true for the filmmakers themselves, they let us down at the end but it's a far more enjoyable watch in terms of story and pace than any of the instalments so far. And although I agree with all my points in the previous paragraph, weirdly enough this feels like one of the biggest returns to straight horror since the first film too. Jump scare Jason and his endless carnage is now once again replaced with legitimate suspense, atmosphere, the use of effective imagery and the manipulation of the depths of your twisted imagination. This style of horror just works better for me.

So no, I might not ultimately be too disappointed this didn't become the bold new direction for the franchise but I also wouldn't have complained - or minded - seeing where this new direction may have taken them. It certainly seems to hint that they may have found a much greater well of storytelling opportunities and maybe even a progression in the quality of the filmmaking along the way. I guess ultimately we'll never know now.

Just watched "Jason Lives" and I give it a 2.5/10.

Maybe it's just what happens when you watch all the movies in quick succession but with so many of the Friday movies fresh in my memory, it feels hard to really care for this one. It doesn't have the fun novelty of the 3D gimmicks from part 3, it doesn't have any of the suspense and tension from parts 1 and 2 nor does the zombie Jason live up to the juggernaut Jason of Part 4 and so I utterly fail to grasp why so many claim this the "most entertaining entry into the franchise". I mean really?!

I'd probably consider 2 and 4 tied for my favorite, with 2 perhaps edging 4 out a little. I like 2's Jason because of how vulnerable he seems (he freaks the f*** out when that girl shoves a chainsaw in his face), but I love 4 because Jason is so freaking huge and is the most menacing he's ever been (IMO).

Kane Hodder's Jason does absolutely nothing for me, and I feel he starred in the three absolute worst movies in the series (Jason Takes Manhattan, Jason Goes to Hell, and Jason X), steeping even lower than 5 overall. I liked him in 6 though, so maybe it's just the quality of the movies making me feel that way about his performance, but after the mammoth portrayal in 4, I feel Hodder's is so puny and short and just doesn't have any force or dread behind him, and Uber Jason is a total cartoony joke.

Kane Hodder's first Jason was 7.

Personally, I like JGtH, but it's probably in it's own little universe for me. I don't watch the other Fridays with the feeling that they are working up to that moment when Jason becomes some sort of body hopping, gooey black lump. It does have several things to recommend: That first chase (ending in a jump scare which made me shriek), the sting operation (come on, it was about time), the melting man, the diner siege, the fact that there's a bounty hunter dedicated to hunting down Jason types (apparently there's more like him), and the over-the-top tone of the movie. I'll take it over FvJ or JX any day.

Whoops. I knew Hodder did four F13s but I totally forgot about 7 for a moment. For me, the series dips in quality big-time after 6, with each consecutive one worse than the last. I've yet to see FvJ, plan to do so soon.

The fourth Jason flick is definitely a good one! The much gorier alternate take of Jason's demise should have been used in the actual flick though!

I agree with every word of this post.

To this day the love for Hodder's Jason baffles me. Sure, the makeup was great in The New Blood, but other than that I just don't get what fans see in those performances. I'll take 'maniac Jason' over 'zombie Jason' anytime.

That's a definite! Also, there's nothing wrong with Hodder's Jason, it's the films he starred in that were under par. I thought he was a rather good Jason. Him and C.J. Graham are my favorites of the franchise.

This. Hodder was an awesome Jason the movies he were in sucked though.

4 and 6 are my favorites, too. I'd rank all 12 like this:

4
6
2
7
3
1
Reboot
5
8
9
FVJ
10

The dislike for the reboot puzzles me a little. It's not the best of the series but very far from being the worst, IMO.

Reboot just had the most annoying characters in the series Imo, Jason looked awesome, setting and cinematography were fine, the characters just grated on my nerves though.

I haven't seen the remake since it came out, and at the time I thought it was pretty dull. After finally seeing parts 7 through 10, however, I gotta say it seems pretty good by comparison. Kind of a back-to-basics movie where the later movies in the original series unsuccessfully ventured into other territory.

But yeah, the characters were the most mindless, shitty characters of just about any slasher I've ever seen.

It could've done without quite a few of the characters I agree, but I still enjoy it every time I see it. I find it gets more enjoyable the more I see it.

The only movie I've liked less than the original so far is "The Final Chapter".
