With Friday 2-4 taking place over the course of a week, it makes more sense that there isn't much progress with its mythology.

Yet the films couldn't even make sense of that. Where no time was meant to have passed Jason was still somehow raping people in the woods, in outfits he got AFTER that was supposed to have happened.

Exactly. Yet that was supposed to be taking place BEFORE he got the clothes from the shop owner at the start of the film so he should have a bag on his head and hillbilly clothes. Even so that wouldn't explain jack shit considering these films are supposed to be taking place back to back, so where did Jason find the time to go rape people between the two movies? Is he Father Christmas...of rape?

3 follows directly after 2 and Chris talks about an incident that happened in the past, before the events of 2.

The sequence in Friday the 13th: Part 3 where Jason attacks Chris Higgins in the woods was Chris's recollection of the story, so it's not necessarily reliable, just as many eyewitness police reports or testimonies from traumatized victims may not necessarily be fully accurate. All that I figure is, as HarrisonJohn posted above, it happened before the events in the second movie.

So Jason goes from his outfit in Part 3, to his outfit in Part 2, back to his outfit in Part 3? And if it takes place before Part 2, when Jason was still an invalid child in a man's body, what would his motives be for what he does to Chris?

They look like similar but different outfits to me. Looks very dirty in the flashback and the pants a different color (shirt too, I think).
In 2 he is wearing something different when he kills Alice than in the rest of the film, which takes place a while after killing Alice, so he didn't just wear the one outfit until he stole the clothes at the beginning of 3.

Supposing that Jason's attack on Chris happened before the events in Friday the 13th: Part 2, this could have been from a time before Jason actually started killing people, and when, in his underdeveloped mind, he was simply trying to imitate behavior that he had seen from the camp counselors when he was younger before he drowned. Friday the 13th: Part 3 never goes into detail about exactly what Jason did with Chris, aside from her vague recollection, so I'm inclined to think that what happened was not so much a forced sex act in its entirety as it was Jason chasing a woman with no clear idea of how to work through his thoughts on how to interact with others.

I've always preferred to think of the incident simply as an "attack", as opposed to an actual rape.

On the other hand, maybe I'm just putting way way way too much thought into analyzing this movie.

It was meant to be a sex attack at some point, and then it was decided that it was too realistic of a horror for this type of movie, so it was just left vague and unexplained. I don't think, as it was filmed, that it ended up happening to the character.

It's interesting how I can be an enthusiastic fan of a 12-movie series that features multiple scenes of grisly killings, but I wince at the mere thought of a rape scene in a film.

This is why Straw Dogs (1971) is the most uncomfortable movie in my entire Blu-ray collection.

I understand. I love 80's slashers but after seeing Jodie Foster gang raped on a pinball machine in The Accused back in 1988, any rape scene or mention just turns my stomach.

I don't think they would have filmed a scene like that; Chris would say it, and it would change the tone of the movie, and Jason as a villain.

The director of 4 said he considered having Jason grab Trish's chest during their fight, then changed his mind.

I've wondered in 2 if they were trying to imply anything by cutting away from what happens to Terri, only to show her later in Jason's shack.

I watched that on Netflix earlier this year (with my mom present, not that it made any difference), and oh my God was that just the worst. I think that takes the cake for most disturbing rape scene I've ever seen, even more so than in a certain Fincher movie from 2011 (which that scene is unpleasant to look forward to as well), hell probably one of my top disturbing scenes of all time. It was just awful because it felt realistic, things like that happen with people just watching or even laughing. And the fact that they take turns. Uggghhh. I think that scarred me.....temporarily at least.

On a site note, Owl, I will actually be getting Straw Dogs on Blu-ray for Christmas this year, as I've wanted to see it for so long.

You may well be over thinking this, but you have made more sense of it than the filmmakers themselves have.

Every Friday has their own Jason, no sequel really recreates the previous incarnation exactly or preserves perfect continuity. Every Friday has it's own mask as well. It's best if you view like a serial anthology, where each film is like a campfire telling, with each story having a different take on the lore. The closest continuity is 3 and 4 with looks and plot points, but even that has it's breaks.

Jason Takes Manhattan is my favorite

But I can understand why you guys hate it.

I think all the first 8 Friday The 13th's are awesome in their own way, but Jason Takes Manhattan is the one I've watched the most for some reason.

Gah, I can't get disc one to play now without locking up. Tried a PS3, standalone Sony player and a Samsung. There are light scratches underneath the coating that won't rub off with a micro cloth like the others. Going to go through and remove all of the other discs, check them and put them in in standard case. WB is going to send me a replacement for the first movie and any others that have started skipping. Pretty great customer service since I bought it on release day.

I wouldn't call it my favorite but I like it too. I just love the classic 80s feel of all the Paramount movies.
