Agreed on all counts (though I've yet to see Jason X). It actually drags a bit for me once they reach NYC but the reveals of the Statue of Liberty and Times Square are great moments IMO. I don't even mind the Vancouver shooting locations much since they remind me of early seasons of the X-Files.

It also features several 'favorites' for me:

1 Favorite theme song
2 Favorite character & acting (Peter Mark Richman hamming it up as the Crusty Old Dean)
3 One of my favorite death scenes
[Show spoiler](Hu's character getting choked after Jason seemingly teleports to all of the possible exits)

The ending is a massive disappointment but at least they play the great theme song over the end credits again.

Completely agree with this. It's also the first one I ever saw so I have a soft spot for it but yes it's definitely better than the two that came directly after it and it's got some charm to it.

Part 8 does have a really good theme song, but not quite as awesome as “Man Behind the Mask” from Part 6, IMO. I don’t think any of the films are necessarily underrated. People who are fans of the series generally like all of the Paramount films to varying degrees. Parts 1-6 are typically the favorites and most would rate 7 and 8 near the bottom. For me they are far better than Jason Goes to Hell and Jason X, which I consider to be something different entirely.

I liked this one too. That's always been more of a fan criticism and issue taken with the title. There's great fan awareness of the reason they shot so little in NYC as well. Objectively speaking, it's not really a flaw. How much of a movie is set in a particular city has no bearing on its quality. Would I have liked more NYC? Yes, but it has a certain charm to it that I have fun with.

I don't really dislike any of the movies, though Part V and JGTH are probably at the bottom for me. I really need to revisit the series.

Yeah, I enjoyed Part 8 much more than I thought I would. I already knew it mostly took place on a cruise, and that helped set my expectations in check. It has some good characters, some interesting kills, decent cinematography, and isn't poorly written. The best scene is when Jason saves the final girl from possibly being raped (if unintentionally), and the opening kill scene is probably the best in the franchise. It also has the best theme song in the whole series. It's not a great movie, but it's at least better than Part 5 (which is just dumb nonsense, and one of the worst movies I've ever seen) and even Part 3D (which is basically Part 2, but just more dumb and stupid... and in 3D!). My favorites are Parts 1, 4, and 6. 7 was surprisingly enjoyable too.

I recently watched part 8 for the first time and idk... I thought it was pretty damn boring and overall bad. I'm not saying it's unwatchable, but definitely not going out of my way to watch it again. Hands down the worst of the paramount franchise. That being said still far better than anything New Line put out, those movies are god awful!

Also, I couldn't stand the teacher.. he was so damn annoying! Everything with young Jason was just awful.. why did he have hair?! The ending was so terrible with him becoming young. On plus side.. I agree with you there are a few solid kills.. and I can't lie, the scene with Jason in Time Square is awesome, ha even if it is kinda ridiculous.

For me its Part 5.

Part 8 has some moments, but it just felt like cheap made-for-tv flick.

The ONLY Friday the 13th's that exist in my world are 1-4:The Final Chapter.
Everything after pt.4 sucks big time.

Part 6 is my favorite. The movie is gloriously ridiculous. 7 was okay, and 5 and 8 are the worst of the original 8 films by far.

Incorrect, because the best one of all (A New Beginning) followed immediately after.

I don't understand the hate for part 5 . Lots of T&A, probably the goriest kills in the Paramount films, what's not to love? The fact that
[Show spoiler]it wasn't really Jason
doesn't bother me.

I feel the same way. Aside from the controversial reveal, it's the most exploitation/grindhouse entry in the series. Tons of boobs and gore. Lots of fun.

And furthermore, I'll say this: even the worst of the F13 flicks have something to love. Jason Goes to Hell is the worst (IMO) but I DO enjoy the intro scene, and how Jason is treated as a serial killer that the FBI and world at large is aware of. I also dig the character design. Manhattan is a cheap cheat of a flick, but it has some cool kills, and the actual tiny snippet of NY footage are a blast. There's even stuff that I love about Jason X and the remake. Lots of stuff, actually!

At the end of the day, even the worst Jason movies are extremely watchable. The same can't be said for his genre brethren. The lesser NoES flicks are a total bore. The lesser Michael Myers flicks (i.e. nearly all of them) are disastrously bad. And the lesser Hellraiser movies are pretty much unwatchable.

But Jason is cinematic junk food; even the worst entries are still pretty great.

I agree, all the movies are a lot of fun, you definitely can't say the same about NOES or Halloween. JGTH sucks but oh man, what a gorefest. The biggest thing that hurt Friday after part 5 is all the censorship. People would view part 8 differently if the kills were uncut. Part 7 is already understood to be a classic if only it were uncut.

Agree 100%, I always thought it was alot of fun. 3 and 5 are the ones I go back to most often, the only ones I dont really like are Manhattan and Hell but even those I'd have no problem sitting through

It's about 2 hours away for me, I've already bought tickets, normally these 3-d viewings are no where near me. Luckily I have a friend that lives there, we are just going to make a weekend out of it.

I think probably most people dislike it because of
[Show spoiler]the fake Jason.
It's still a hilarious film and fun to watch. The only thing that strikes a sour note for me is
[Show spoiler]Joey's death.

I still have a hard time choking down JGTH or Jason X but I agree that overall the F13 series is more consistent than most of the other horror franchises. I also find something like Jason Goes To Manhattan more watchable than some of the lesser Halloween or Elm Street sequels. I can't stand Hellraiser, even the "good" ones.

It was definitely way better than I expected. Based off what I was reading on here, I thought it be terrible.. but honestly it is overall a solid movie.

Pros:
Great kills and T&A as you said!

Humor (that outhouse scene alone is amazing)

They did try something different.. even if they didn't quite nail it. I liked that Roy was influenced by Jason... might have not have been perfectly fleshed out, but still something original at least. Sure it's not actually Jason, but theres still a presence of him there.

Cons:
Pacing is a bit slow and drags at times.

Overall, some of the characters are pretty weak. The rednecks in particular just feel gimmicky and out of place.

Tommy Jarvis... he's not awful, but the hallucination stuff from Jason gets a bit old after a while. Much prefer how Tommy is portrayed in part 6.

The ending, while it's not terrible, it just doesn't make sense...
