Default Just got a Wii .... What did I miss?

HI,

I got a Wii at a garage sale today for $10 ... it works. It has 4 controllers and steering wheels ... It came with Wii Sports and Wii play.

Anyways, I've not had a Wii before... I've had PS3 since launch day. And I have a DreamCast too.

I just figured the kids always like Wii...

My impression is everyone who has one is tired of it and they either threw it away or packed it in storage.

I went to look for mario kart on gamestop's website and I'm not sure they still sell any Wii stuff....

Brian,

The Wii is my favorite system, for reasons that are fairly "childish." I love the motion and I think the games are geared towards the family.

Wii is available on Gamestop, but I would caution, their prices are high:

http://www.gamestop.com/browse?nav=1...rio+kart,28zu0.

I'd look on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_trks...at=0&_from=R40

And I'd say no more than $20 for the game.

Other games I love that kids might enjoy:
Epic Mickey ( I just adore this game. Your kids would need help, but it's really well done. The second is not as well done).
Paper Mario / Super Mario Galaxy
Any of the Mario Olympic Games

I too have a Wii but I took it to my girlfriend's house so her kids, her and I play guessing and multiple choice games on it after dinner. Some of our favourites are Family Fued, Price is Right, Jeopardy, Scene It and Smarty Pants. I went to Gamestop to search for games but Amazon is way better when it comes to prices and selection. You might also want to get Namco Museum Remix and Megamix which have a total of 38 games total on two discs. Good luck.

click on the link and compare prices with Gamestop ($5 for a new game or $3 for it used) plus shipping but you can combine several games from one seller to save on shipping.

I played some Wii play... It's fun.

Since it came with 4 of those original Nintendo steering wheels, I will seek Mario Kart and after that I will just be patient and find my games at garage sales and second hand stores.

I love the classic characters esp Zelda/Link Mario/Kong ... So, In time I will pick up great games.

Someone (who already had a Will I guess) bought all the games at that garage sale for $1 each... (most like Mario Kart was there... given all those steering wheels.)... In time I'll get games for it.

Love the fact it came with 4 controllers and a few of the secondary controllers and the steering wheels. It came with jackets for the controllers but I don't think I'll use those...

Thanks,

Brian

Plot thickins....

I got it online and it asked if I wanted to update the FW and then told me the Wii had modifications...

So,... I didn't update the FW....

Bummer.... wonder how I go about finding out which modifications were done...

Why not update? It's never anything radical. Consoles need updating because of changes in technology.

One note on the steering wheels -- they're kind of imprecise. Hard care Mario Kart players tend to use the nunchuks, in my experience.

You'll need the nunchuk controller for many of the good games -- did you get at least one with the system?

I got multiple nunchuck thingies.... 2 I think.

As for the update,... it says because of the mods it might brick which would be sad....

I imagine I don't really "need" the update and I'm in no hurry to convert the thing to a doorstop.

Meanwhile my kid played some of the games that came with it (Wii Sports, Wii Play) and had fun... yipee...

Loving the wii... It's amazing.

What I can't believe is the standard cables are long enough that I can have the sensor bar above the center channel (below the projector screen), and have the wii hooked up to the avr in the rack that's outside the home theater.

That may be a run on sentence,... But I'm so happy. I haven't played ps3 in over a month,.. Shame on me. The kids love the Wii!

It was always hard to explain to the hard core gamers (the ones defending XBox and PS3 to the death) how much fun it is to have a game that pulls in the kids, the wife, and non-traditional gamers. A "game" that actually involves people smiling and playing togther.

I have a PS3 also, and it serves a purpose, but I've never understood the vitriol for the Wii from some quarters.

You should pick up the Component Cable for Wii, even though 480p is the max resolution, it makes a difference, especially with games published by Nintendo. Also definitely look into Super Smash Bros. Brawl, it's definitely one of the Wii's best.

Yep. I got the component cable and Smash Bros. (And Mario Kart)...

The kids have a hard time taking breaks from the Wii .... it's fun, so very fun.

The component cable is essential down in the HT where I have a 82" screen.

Up in the upstairs I have a 42" plasma and the wii using the composite cable looks great on that ... I guess I'll order a component cable for that one too though since that set will accept component...

I like having the 2 cables so I don't have to unplug the video hookups when I take the Wii from the flat screen down to use on the pj. I also got a $8 wireless sensor bar and it's working GREAT.... helps a lot for the HT because everything is outside the HT and then I don't have to string cables around.

What brand is your sensor bar? I've been looking for a good one for ages.

Well Amazon, Walmart, and BJs have the Power A model or something that gets much better reviews, ... it's $15.

The one I bought is rocketfish and it's $8 at Best Buy ... that said... it works fine....

(Actually I bought it yesterday and it wants new batteries today so that's no real good. I guess that's the trouble with these wireless sensors. I think I will modify it using at old wall charger from my junk drawer... That way I just plug it into the wall when I use it. It's not as wireless but there is an outlet there ... it's not a wire tracing across the floor.)

Get the 1st party games, they are great. Both Zeldas & Mario Galaxy games for starters + Mario Kart, Brawl is good too.

There is a line of games I think they are called gold or something which cost $20 which are basically the best games of the console.

The Wii is a great console with good games, is just filled w a bunch of crapware in between the gold ones.

Check Toys R US they tend to have some good deals on cheaper games and wii games don't cost too much now.

originally i had planned to get a Wii but decided against it and decided to take a pass on having weighed out the pros and cons of everything and figured I was better off just sticking with my PS3.

This means somebody added custom firmware to get around some of the protocols of the Wii.

To answer your question, you missed everything!
