I did want to comment about this also.

Avengers Endgame 4K disc has an average bitrate of 36.53 Mbps according to blu-ray.com.

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Aveng...lu-ray/123470/

36.53 Mbps is 46.12% more than 25 Mbps; so, yes, the difference in average bitrate is significant.

The average bitrate on the 4K disc should be higher, but Disney being Disney deliberately chose to cram a 181 minute movie onto a BD-66 disc instead of a BD-100 disc. The blame for the 36.53 Mbps average bitrate belongs to Disney, not the 4K disc format.

Contrast this with the Schindler's List 4K disc. It is a 15 minute longer movie at 196 minutes and it is on a single BD-100 disc with an average bitrate of 51.59 Mbps. If Disney could have been bothered to use a BD-100 disc for Avengers Endgame it could have had a comparable, or even higher, average bitrate.

Yup. In my case is 10-12ft away from my 65” OLED. No pixel peeping either.

It is a big investment in terms of equipment & time. Since then, I have stopped buying digitals and bought hundreds more 4K and HD discs. I still redeem the digital codes that comes with the discs in hope that some days I will be back traveling for work again.
Btw, I don't have Plex but got 40 TB worth of full fat 1:1 mkv rips from my physical collection.

I will continue to buy discs but about 15 or so a year as opposed to buying everything.

Where's alchav?

I haven't seen any posts from him in awhile; that's a bit unusual. Did he get carried out to sea by the digital stream? I hope that he is okay.

Hi Vilya I'm glad you miss me. There really isn't much to Post, you Disc Guys keep padding each other on the back. Streaming PQ keeps going up, so all you have to talk about is Sound......Your Speakers AVR and Pre-Amps. It looks like Bitrate is also back in the Limelight. Where IMO it's all Subjective depending on your equipment and setup.

Here is a YouTube from John Campea, talking about Disney+ and Black Widow going Streaming. Disney is going all in on what they call, Direct to Consumer....Streaming. He lays it all out in his Classroom, where by 2023 Disney+ Revenue will be $7 Billion! Say hello to Streaming, and wish the best for Disc!

Why Black Widow Likely Going To Disney+ And Disney Is All In On Streaming - The John Campea Show - YouTube
Miss you? After a fashion, maybe so. You are an important part of our little community and I would not have it otherwise. Mostly, I am just happy that you are alright.

Naturally, I can not agree with anything that you had to say, but that should not come as any surprise. I have not seen any improvement in streaming's video quality in years; it has mostly been stagnant except as noted below. I would certainly welcome any improvements, but unlike you I only celebrate things that have actually happened.

What I have seen is Netflix shave their bitrates to a fraction of what they once were resulting in noticeably lower video quality- so much so that it even made the news- while also having the hubris to raise their prices. If that's what you call progress, then we clearly define the word differently.

As to who gets what movie first, digital or physical distribution, that has never mattered to me at all. The better quality and genuine ownership that discs provide are worth the trivial amount of extra waiting involved.

Chapek and Iger may have some news coming out around Dec 10, 2020. Disney is all in on "Direct to Consumer" by passing the normal Distribution Channels!

With theaters all but closed, and the few that aren't limited to greatly reduced capacity, Disney is just using the distribution channels that remain. They still release discs; the only thing that has changed is the temporary loss of substantive theatrical exhibition.

Only applicable to how well Mulan did. While Soul is going to Disney + as a gift, Black Widow is not.

I still watch some streaming contents though, especially when it comes to streaming exclusives (what choice do I have?) or movies that I don’t really care about (just playing in the background while I’m writing my AV review articles, etc).

I don’t care whether it’s 2 mbps or 100 mbps. If I can very easily detect the artifacts, it’s just not good enough.
Same here but there are barely any artifacts on high quality streaming platforms like iTunes/MA which was my point.

Its the same as OLED Vs LED-LCD debate. One can argue the TV tech is not up to the mark, so even watching the disc isn't going to be correctly rendered by the TV.

Oh stop, if you look at near black or near white region of the video you see more artifacts. This from looking at iTunes/MA digital streams compared to the BD or UHD BD media. Really you need to know what to look for, not proclaim all is perfect.

Not on my Panny OLED which handles poorly compressed material / near blacks (near black chrominance overshoot as Vincent Teoh calls) very well.

I am keeping a track of streaming bit rates in my spreadsheet. Wherever it is way too deficient and the picture is not satisfactory, I buy the disc version. this way I need not buy every disc that's out there and keep it to bare minimum.

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets...it?usp=sharing

Btw, I jumped to digital as I ran out of shelf space. It's simply not affordable for me and I am not going to bury my head in the sand and pretend that high quality streaming is shite.

Anyway, my last post in this thread. Enjoy debating whilst I enjoy both formats subject to time and convenience.

The thing is though, the masses are embracing subscription streaming, not digital HD/UHD, we know for a fact that bit rates are decreasing there on Netflix, I’m certain the others will follow.
