Our son's GF got COVID a couple of months back, went for treatment and was over the worst part after a couple of days. She had been vaccinated. Was quarantined for several days.

As a reminder to everyone, my first cousin refused to get vaccinated, contracted CV-19 and expired after 2 weeks of intensive hospital care.

We have been vaccinated and have had our boosters as well. We still disinfect all mail, incoming packages and local purchased goods. We wear our mask when out in the public.
Thanks, yeah I got my booster a while back, so glad I did. I have always took it seriously due to personal experience (which you all know about).

If only your first cousin had changed his mind, it’s tragic.

I'm due for a booster next month. I haven't gone a month since last May without being jabbed for one thing or another; it's become routine.

I go in for my heart testing tomorrow and we'll see where that leads. Have fun and be (mostly) good until I return.

What is a Modern Disc Player? I have a Panasonic Blu-ray Player that's 1080P, still connected to my System and works great. I'm sure most people still consider the Oppo the best Player which is discontinued. Would a good Modern Player be a Panasonic 9000 or a Raevon? Very few people have these, so few people have Modern Players.

Watched The Portege on Amazon Prime last night in 4K. Great Action Movie with Michael Keaton, Maggie Q, and Samuel Jackson. Don't need Disc for Fantastic Quality Content!

I missed out on my Batman showing last week, but saw it yesterday in IMAX and it was a freakin's masterpiece! Loved it. The 4K disc will hopefully be something special.

Modern player = one that can play UHD disc with HDR10, some can play disc with HDR10+, HLG, and/or DV. Several shown here.

Really, you have statics to back up that statement?

I assume you meant to say The Protégé, watched via Netflix disc by mail, liked it and purchased the UHD BD version.

I watched The Batman last night and loved it. Best movie I've seen this year. I loved how dark it was and the score was great.

Greig Fraser was the DP, also did Dune (2021) so here is hopping this one is watchable for us. Have several titles were Michael Giacchino was the music composer so will look forward to this one's sound track.

Steed, ? you are beyond the 5 day window from symptom onset, or don’t qualify for taking Paxlovid(view spoiler ending). In our country, Pax was FDA approved about 2½ weeks after I made that post last Dec.

How much do you guys spend on streaming and cable in a month? How much time do you stream or watch cable? I'm kind of curious if streaming is actually a good deal for most people or if it works out more like a gym membership. When you think about it streaming needs to offer a pretty insane value to be really worthwhile since it essentially gives you a pool of items which you rent but they probably don't always offer your first choice.

I spend way too much because I don't like streaming but my wife and kids do. Exactly how much, I would rather not try to determine.

First off we have Apple One because our choice for music streaming is Apple music and we use iCloud so the rest of the services are effectively free.

Then there's Disney+ because one of my kids is Marvel crazy.

Finally there's Netflix because, again the kids want it. I absolutely hate Netflix and the kids were frankly surprized when I relented but I guess I love my kids enough to put up with it.

I do end up using them all but aside from Disney it hasn't changed my buying habits. I regret I stopped buying Disney titles because I really enjoy those and most of what they do is good. I think of all 3 services Disney is the one we probably will never go without and it's clearly the best value.

Thankfully my neighbor shares Hulu with live TV so I can watch sports and I don't have to add that on to an otherwise huge streaming bill. Hulu saved me from buying a few movies that I enjoyed but didn't like enough to purchase or stuff I watched and didn't enjoy.

Edit- I've never paid for cable and our house gets no OTA reception.
Edit 2 - I use the library streaming service Kanopy but that's free so not really part of this question. I used to use other free services like Tubi and Pluto but I can't stand ads. I still put up with ads (muted and ignored) on Youtube because there's so much useful info there.

-Brian

Yeah, I’m on day 6 now. I still have it apparently although I feel fine except a little tiredness. I’m expecting to get rid of it by the weekend hopefully. That seems to be the timeline for some friends who caught it but had it mild.

That medication you refer to is only for people considered high risk (low immune system, or other risk factor).

Good to hear from you man.

Reading about U.K. families struggles with the crippling energy bill rises, it surprised me how many people plan to get rid of Netflix and Disney+.
It coincides with the news that Disney+ is to offer a cheaper ad supported model at the end of the year and our big ad supported broadcast channel ITV is to get its own streaming service that will have free with ads and subscription based models.

It seems that by the end of 2023, streaming services that operate globally (most of them) are going to have to offer much cheaper ad models, less they are cancelled by millions. This will echo in Europe as well where many countries are going to face life altering gas and electricity rises.

My question is, will Netflix follow? It’s something I have suggested will happen for years now (as you all know) and I think it’s inevitable.

Oh, and my other question is, is the energy crisis as badly felt in the USA as in Europe and what actions will be necessary by streaming services to keep surviving?

I understand there are more important going on right now but if we can just stick to the entertainment angle and avoid politics, that would be cool.

Netflix CFO: Ad-Supported Content Not on the Table — For Now

Quote:
On the heels of rival subscription streaming video service Disney+ saying it would roll out a less-expensive ad-supported option this year, Netflix is not joining the growing bandwagon of SVOD platforms adopting ad-supported options.

Speaking March 8 at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media & Telecom confab, CFO Spence Neumann said he doubted he would a do “show of hands” in favor of Netflix adopting an ad-supported streaming option. At the same time, the executive reiterated that the SVOD pioneer isn’t against the concept either.

“It’s not like we have religion against advertising to be clear,” Neumann said. “I mean, we’re focused is on optimizing for long-term revenue, big profit pools. And we want to do it in a way that is a great experience for our members.”

Neumann said Netflix is currently about a $30 billion annual business, up 50% from $20 billion in revenue three years ago without advertising. During that period, the streamer added 28 million subscribers in 2019, 37 million in 2020, and 18 million in 2021.

Netflix are a global company and the U.K, Germany, France are quite important countries for them. (They shoot a lot of shows from U.K. studios) if Europe is about to be hit with a major cost of living crisis, Netflix are going to have to adapt their strategy. They will lose millions of subscribers otherwise.

I’m not interested in a ad supported service but it might be the difference between people keeping it or getting rid.
