Question Interlacing Problem on Stargate SG-1 DVDs?

Obviously, the Stargate seasons are only 480p. But my BD player is upconverting it. However, as I watch them, I often notice jagged horizontal lines that I have come to associate with an interlaced picture. Particularly around people's mouths as they are talking.

Has anyone else encountered this? I guess I expected a better job of upconverting. I never notice this when watching HDTV broadcasts with a 1080i picture. Or could I possibly have a setting wrong somewhere?

That's an interesting question. I still have a standard-definition TV but sometimes, when I watch DVDs, I get a slight effect to that degree. When I watch on my computer, though, it is a different story. I would assume likely when a Blu-ray version does eventually appear, that it shouldn't be an issue. Then again, that's just my two cents.

Are you noticing this on the early seasons or the later

It may depend on what kind of TV you're using. If your TV is native 720p that accepts a 1080i signal, this may have to do with the video processor in your TV having problems handling the interlaced signal. (It happens on occasion with my TV.) It's not de-interlacing it correctly.

I know this is usually a TV issue - as opposed to a player issue - due to the fact that I've had the same sort of thing happen on by 32" LCD flat panel when watching either my PS3, my HD DVD player, or my old upconverting DVD player. (Like I said, it only happens on occasion, but it does happen.)

I have the complete series and I have noticed that the latter seasons look great on my PS3 and my 1080i upconvert. I am very impressed with season 8 and 9.

Sounds like your BD player is having a bit of trouble with de-interlacing. Weird shaped objects can be pretty difficult to de-interlace and only the best of the best can de-interlace just about anything without many problems, even still, no solution is perfect. Even the PS3, powered by Nvidia which is regarded as pretty damn awesome at dvd enhancement, still exhibits occasional difficulty de-interlacing some things. Don't worry about it too much. NTSC was a pretty crappy video solution.

I played the first 2 series recently (within the last 2 weeks) on my PS3 with my TV, and I had absolutely no problems other then it just being staticy and horrific looking compared to the later seasons. I chalked that up to age honestly. I didn't see any visual effects other then a few splotches here and there throughout the different episodes.

First 2 seasons were shot 16mm is a big reason. No HD post until season 6

Yeah, I was actually surprised that it didn't look that horrific. Can't wait til I get to the newer seasons to see how good they look, don't want to just jump ahead.

Yes, I am referring to earlier seasons. My wife and I just started on season 4. So far, I've only watched season 3 and 4 with my BD player and new TV.

And my TV is actually 1080p. Which, because of that and the upconverting, is the reason I was surprised to see this interlacing at all.

The other problem is that the 22 episode seasons tend to be compressed all to hell. MGM insisted on using 5 disc sets instead of 6, so on the 5 episode discs there's usually 2 scenes per episode they bitstarve hardcore (usually conference scenes) to make it fit

Wow - now that's a fascinating idea. I haven't been paying attention to whether I mainly noticed them on the 4 or 5-episode disks. However - I HAVE noticed that it seems to happen most often in conference scenes. Just thought it was a coincidence. Thanks - I think you've probably nailed the problem. Now, I'm REALLY going to pay attention to which disk it happens on. I wish I had some equipment that showed the bitrate. I would love to see that.

So could what I am seeing actually be compression artifacts, rather than an interlacing problem?

Deinterlacing has nothing to do with the shape of anything onscreen. It's simply joining two fields into one frame. It's not doing any advanced image processing or anything.

There are many situations where it can fail for various reasons, but it's not due to the shape of anything.
