It looks spectacular actually. They did decide to get rid of the threads supporting the machines. The blacks with beginning introduction/narration by Sir Cedric Hardwicke as he goes through each of the planets etc is mesmerizing as the planets from distance and effects of lava flows etc are really cool. Finally grain of film looks like grain just gorgeous colors. Top notch. Don't know why no disc.

Hyped for this. I don't care about the audio though. Unless a muted Dakota cut exists it will always be bad.

So this is actually available 4K HDR? It's mind boggling to me this isn't on disc yet. Probably one of the top 5 or top 10 most baffling "not yet on blu-ray" films.
If there's now a 4K HDR master, that makes it all the more infuriating.

Dolby Atmos Dolby Vision 4K UHD HDR Blu-ray physical disc ... I care a lot about this one, in particular the audio.

Yes 4K HDR through Kaleidescape. I've watched it three or four times looks fantastic. The rich deep colors fine grain, blacks why no disc I don't get it

You can find the Blu-Ray in basically every country outside North America.

I'd like to see a 4K UHD too, but it would undoubtedly happen from Studio Canal outside the U.S. if it ever did.

Yes yes yes, more Cruise in 4K. How many others have anniversaries this year? Need Minority Report, Collateral would look stunning in 4K, Edge of Tomorrow too.

Really hope this is still happening.

I watched my HDX copy on Vudu last night, and forgot how good this film was.

What is surprising is that immediately afterwards, I went onto Rotten Tomatoes and saw that the audience score is a mere 42% for this. That's pretty interesting, as I thought it was one of the better 2000s sci-fi films. It's also incredibly dark and violent for a PG-13 film. That entire sequence when they're in fat Tim Robbins' house is really tense from start to finish.

Really looking forward to the UHD for this if it does indeed happen.

I also need 'Elysium'.

They both upgraded to UHD & Dolby Vision in Vudu, and they look fantastic. Can't imagine how good they'd look on disc.

'Elysium', IMHO, is the best looking sci-fi action film since Cameron's 'Avatar'.

Whatever flaws 'Elysium' has, it's still such a gorgeous film to look at from start to finish, with one of the most unique looking dystopic settings I've ever seen.

If we are able to get those along with 'War of the Worlds' this year, I will be extremely happy.

Not a big Sci-Fi fan but love this movie. The theatrical experience is burned in my brain. WCG and HDR should look better than what I saw.

Bit of a love hate split with this film for me.

First half is awesome. Second half is meh. Imo.

I’ll still get this as i fully expect it to look (and sound) stunning.

Theatrical experience was indeed great. Really pretty intense for a PG.

I was giving the Blu-ray another look-through, because I do love this movie. This one was definitely not designed for SDR, as the cinematography is so high-contrast. This results in oppressive blacks and some intense brightness that absolutely obliterates detail in parts of the frame. Even when Ray's playing catch with Robbie in the backyard, parts of faces disappear because of the bright sunlight. Janusz has always gone for this brand of high-contrast look, with deliberately blown-out windows and skies, so I'm looking forward to seeing what HDR does for this. It will hopefully retain the intended look while bringing back some highlight detail. The 4K edition that's streaming in Australia actually has improvements in this respect, even if there's no HDR just yet. It still looks very nice.

Another thing I noticed is that the special effects shots, in particular, have some uber blocky grain on the Blu. There's also one oddly blocky, poor-looking shot of Ray when he's playing catch in the backyard. I looked at the 4K version on Stan, and again there are huuuuge improvements to grain refinement, and that weirdly cruddy backyard shot looks much better. Since this film was apparently finished photochemically, one would imagine the Blu-ray was created from a 2K scan of the negative, including film-outs of the VFX shots, though some of the blocky grain has me wondering if it's an older, archival digital master. Whatever the case, the 4K streaming version is very promising, and it definitely seems like they did a fresh 4K scan of the negative/film-out, unless they were able to locate the original ILM digital files and use those. Also worth pointing out that some of the print damage on the Blu is not there on the 4K, so it's definitely a new scan/remaster. If I still had the DVD handy, I'd compare it to the print damage on the Blu to see if it's the same master, buuut I don't haz no DVD copy anymore.

Can't wait for this disc.

Sunshine in 4K with a completely different second half minus the space zombie would be glorious... such a shame.
