No way this will carry over all of Arrow's extras, or the various cuts. I'll happily add this 4K disc to the Arrow set, though.

If only Arrow felt comfortable enough to go 4K themselves on releases like Waterworld and Robocop. I'd much rather buy from them.

I have absolutely no doubt that you will follow through on what you said. That wasn't something implied by myself at least. I guess it is ultimately a YMMV scenario. I would not want to miss out on the UHD disc, even just for a demo material purpose and for a change up viewing experience every handful watches.

Maybe I'll eat my words but a particular cut is not a dealbreaker on UHD purchasing and I can't foresee anything on my wishlist having your issue you have. Especially not an alternate cut...

Hmm. Having difficulty deciding if I should buy the Arrow release or wait for the UHD. Particularly since I've never seen the Ulysses Cut.

One thing I noted from the Arrow review on this site:
Quote:
Waterworld was exclusively restored by Arrow Films and is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 with stereo and 5.1 sound.

The original 35mm camera negative was scanned in 4K resolution on a Lasergraphics Director scanner at EFilm, Burbank. Additional 35mm intermediary elements were scanned in 4K resolution for those sections unique to the Extended TV Cut and Ulysses Cut versions.
So if Arrow had it scanned and restored in 4K for their BD is this scan and restoration likely to be the source that Universal will also be using for their UHD?

Universal scanned it, Arrow supervised the new cut assembly

Are you a fan of the film? I don't understand how one could be a fan of the film and not want to have access to the extended cut, even if it's just for curiosity's sake and completion's sake. Furthermore, the Arrow edition has the feature-length making-of documentary and a couple other features, including a wonderful, Criterion-like booklet. The Universal release will have none of this. I mean, if you're a fan of the film, how could you just shrug all this off?

Moreover, if you're a fan of lavish special editions where home video departments throw the kitchen sink at a release, leaving no stone unturned, you should support the Arrow release, because it's a rare genuine big-budget special edition in 2019.

People talk about UHD is doomed, blah blah. NO, it's the special edition that is doomed. Go back 12-15 years and seemingly every release was afforded at least a commentary track if not a making-of docu on top of it. Now, you're lucky to get 30 minutes of blase EPK material.

Support the Arrow release if you care about any of this.

One of my favourite movies but I am blown away by the Arrow version and of course the Ulysses Cut. A 4K would be very tempting though.

I have never owned this movie, but I have probably seen it 4-5 times. That's saying how much I enjoyed this movie. I guess I never thought it was worth the purchase. However, 4k should make this look awesome. I am relatively new to the movie game, so the Arrow version may already have the visual appeal that I'm looking forward to. Although, knowing what 4k/HDR can do for a movie especially a movie that should be shimmering on the water will likely push me to finally own this movie.

I think that is a good summary about why I'm so into 4k. Does 4k make me purchase more movies? Absolutely. I'll admit, a few are simply because I am still fighting the urge to buy it because it is in 4k, but something like this is an example of a movie that I love that will look amazing at home that I never felt worth buying. It sounds like the Arrow version looks great, so I expect the same or better for this!

The Arrow version looks absolutely staggering, in fact I'd say it's the best looking catalogue blu ray I've ever seen.

I wouldn't call myself a fan no. But I am curious about the extended cut. Still, the UHD is likely to offer by far the superior visual presentation of the film so it's difficult deciding which one to get.

Picture quality > special features. All day every day. Not even a contest for me. Especially these days, when you’re usually just gonna get an overlong, static-camera interview at best. No thanks.

I hope the UHD includes The Ulysses Cut, but if it doesn’t, I’ve never seen it, so I what I don’t know won’t hurt me while I’m enjoying the theatrical cut in 4K HDR.

Yeah, this is pretty much pointless if it's just the theatrical cut. The Arrow BD already looks fantastic so this would actually be a step down (for me, anyway).

I personally don't think there's a chance in Hades Universals uhd is going to look as good as Arrows recent edition, in the color Dept. Maybe Universal should use Arrows master now. That would be hilarious. But damn, that would look phenomenal.

They will use that master though won't they? I thought that was the whole idea.

My point was that the Arrow release is decidedly not that, so anybody who wants to support special editions should pick it up and send a message.

You're quite honestly a casual fan of the flick and not a fan of special editions, which is fine. But you're quite different from me. Special features are added value content that help justify the expense. They help convince me to purchase.

Donít get me wrong: I love a good special edition. But, like I said, I like a 4K UHD BD much more.

That’s the catch 22. Arrow is hesitant to go 4k unless they see a monetary value in it, Universal announces a 4k and people say stick with the Arrow over the uhd
With that logic no Indie label will go 4k. I say get both if the special features and cuts are worth it to you.

Same here, this would have been the perfect title to kick off their foray into UHD.
