Question Game remakes: good and bad

I've currently realized (some minutes ago actually) that I'm not very good at knowing and analyzing of remakes. The reason is that I have almost never played them.
So the question is: are remakes good or bad?
Have you played any remakes which were better or worse than original games?

None of those are remakes. They are all reboots except Duke Nukem Forever, which is a sequel. None of them tell the same story as the original.

On topic, I've personally found most remakes to be worse than the originals. Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Monkey Island Special Edition, Conker: Live & Reloaded, Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes, and Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty are all worse than the originals. They all tried to play basically the same as the originals but ended up making tweaks that made the games worse.

There haven't been many remakes that tell the same story but are quite different games. Ratchet & Clank and Tomb Raider Anniversary are the best examples of that. R&C improved on the original in some ways but was worse in others. TRA was a definite improvement over the original but was held back by a lot of design flaws inherent in the original so it couldn't hold up with the other Tomb Raider games of the time. Resident Evil 2 and Final Fantasy VII fall into this category as well, but neither of them are out yet so I can't comment on their quality.

Remasters are generally good. Those tend to run on the same engine with just some upscaled or improved textures. They are basically just like a Blu-ray release of something previously released on DVD. They take very little effort to make compared to a new game or a remake with a completely new engine and they rarely screw things up.

I'm sorry, I conflated remakes and reboots. I'll show myself out.
