I just bought Bend of the River in one of those James Stewart 4-Pack sets. I'll buy it again for whatever commentary track and improved picture.

I almost bought the Universal DVD-R of Stick but I'm glad I held off on it. That'll be an interesting commentary track, given the studio meddling that Burt endured.

Also looking forward to Charley Varrick.

KLI - when you request titles, do you know ahead of time the shape of the current master? Or do you ask to see what the master looks like, or ask what shape it’s in? How does this work exactly? I would think there are a lot of older titles that ultimately aren’t in good enough shape to release.

Also, is there entire catalog digitized? And do they ever reject licensing certain films due to poor masters or elements? Or they will allow you anything as long as you’re okay with the quality?

I would love to see Kino release the 1985 film Fandango with Kevin Costner and Judd Nelson, although I believe Amblin Entertainment has the rights (or possibly Warner, since it released the DVD many years ago). I don’t believe this has ever had a release on Blu elsewhere.....

Great news about THE MAGIC SWORD. The existing MGM DVD looks no better than a VHS transfer, which it might have been.

Sometimes, considering them problematic. Or they will allow you anything as long as you’re okay with the quality? Depends on the studio.

We ask for a detailed report… Is it available in HD? When was the master created and from what source? Was it a 2K or 4K scan? Was it a full restoration? Can they share their QC report with us?

But most of the time, all we get is a yes or no answer to the first question. We then QC the HD master to see if it’s releasable as is or in need of additional work or a completely new scan and transfer. In most cases we’re allowed access to the film elements, other times, the restoration has to be overseen by the studio and no access can be given to the licensee... and only if it's a title on their preservation schedule or one they're willing to add - otherwise we would either release the current HD master or drop the title and hope we could replace it with something else.

But these relationships evolve and the second deals are usually more educated ones, where the licensee knows more ahead of time.

I have never seen The Magic Sword but I will blind buy it because of Burt I. Gordon. He is my idol. He is the Cecil B. DeMille of super sized creature/people movies. I would be forever grateful to Kino if you could release ALL of Mr. B.I.G.'s movies that have not made to blu ray, including The Boy and The Pirates (1960). Mr. KLI can you tell us if there are any other Burt I. Gordon films coming from Kino? Thanks for all you do.....

4 more Bronson titles is very exciting news!

I'm hoping LOVE AND BULLETS and BORDERLINE are 2 of the titles as they are both rare films and I've never seen them.

If I had to guess on one strong probability it would be SOMEONE BEHIND THE DOOR which also stars the amazing Anthony Perkins. Other maybes could be CHINO and RED SUN....

Hope they get announced soon!

The North American rights for Red Sun are with Warner Brothers.
