United Kingdom Avatar ~26/04/10~

HMV have now got James Cameron's megahit Avatar up for preorder. There are 2 versions of the bluray, one being a steelbook.

Both have 2 discs, and the steelbook includes artcards

Avatar Blu-ray

Avatar Limited Edition Steelbook Blu-ray

Boycott this piece of crap.
Selling it at full price too, the nerve Cameron and Fox have.

I will buy it on release, watch it and then sell it on, no point in me keeping it if they intend on releasing different versions every 6 months.

If Cameron's is thinking about releasing an extended cut into theater's later this year then you can bet there'll be another release for that too.

I see the Play.com Steelbook version mentions a T-Shirt, but I don't see a mention of this on Amazon or HMV.

Play.com exclusiver, perhaps? I will buy the Steelbook as it will undoubtedly be easy to sell on at a later date.

I will buy the version from Play, keep it as mint as possible then sell it when the full blown version is released.

Apparently future versions may not be Superbit, so for the people who want the ultimate picture, this may be the one to get, However i must agree that a bare bones edition is pretty poor imo.

7.1 audio would be nice but probably not going to happen. Only Lionsgate seem to release those

I can't see the point of this release it was only the 3D affects that sold a very poor film with no story and terrible acting. the children who packed the multis to see this will be in for a shock when they see it flat on a HD tv

Im one of the few who havent yet actually seen Avatar, and wont do untill i have the BD.

While im sure the 3D in cinema's look brilliant, i still think Avatar will look excellent on Blu-ray even not in 3D.

CGI is known to look awesome in HD, and by the looks of it this film has alot of it.

No story? I mean really?
What it was about and the traditional tale as old as time theme was the reason it became the biggest film of all time. It touched a nerve with people the world over.

Sorry buddy. You're entitled to your own opinion but I couldn't disagree more. The acting was fine across the board too and no better or worse than any James Cameron film.

Sort of thing I hate on forums is when people try and throw their opinion out like it's fact, without respecting anybody else's opinion.

SSblu - you're in for a treat. It will be stunning on bluray.

Ahhh, I hate it when people online turn into 'super' critics, all films must be an amazing piece of art to them. I saw Avatar in 2D and 3D at the cinema and all that kept going through my mind is "how amazing is this going to look on blu ray?!".

And yes, the acting was very good throughout, Sam Worthington was very good. Nothing wrong with the storyline, yes it is a bit 'Pocahontas' but Cameron made it truly original in his own way.

SSBlu you are indeed in for a treat.

I'll actually be buying the Blu-ray for the 2D. I watched it in 3D and it didn't work at all for me, only gave me a headache, so I'm looking forward to seeing the movie again, properly this time.

There's not a single original bone in the story, and it was about as predictable as a movie can possibly get, but that doesn't mean it wasn't well-made and an enjoyable experience overall.

SSBlu - we're no doubt going on like broken records as all you'll have heard is how amazing it is. Rare to come across someone who hasn't seen it, but honestly, words cannot do justice to what an incredible experience it is - 3D or not. I've seen it in 3D and 2D too and enjoyed the latter just as much.

Going back to the blu-ray release itself.....
Absolutely no surprise Fox is milking it for all its worth by double-dipping. I have no issue with doing this for one-off movies like this.

Is that right that we find out next week what is going to be on the super-duper one?? Seems its bound to be some sort of extended cut, and a boat-load of special features.

lol that they claim they're holding back on the extras so as to present the barebones as the optimum in terms of quality. Nice spin
Already hilarious to hear people complaining about this. They're being upfront and saying this is all we're getting until November - as it should be.

Wow, this is, what, 4 or 5 weeks away??

I'm tempted to pre-order the play.com version with the t-shirt - but then again if the release is region free the world over it won't surprise me to see it shipping from the likes of movietyme and dvdworldusa.com around April 8th/9th. Might well import it to get it asap.

Don't really have a problem getting this version, but Cameron sure is milking this like hell.

I'm not a special features person and whilst Avatar was technically a great achievement, I still don't like the film enough to want an uber mega multiple disc version with all the features about how they made it. The film was also too long as it was, so an extended version doesn't interest me. As for the 3D, not only do I not care about it, but I JUST got my first HDTV and BDP with no intention to upgrade any of them to 3D for a while, if ever. So the nice UK steelbook will be fine
