I think he's referring to the new Bee Gees concert BD.

An "SD Blu-ray" is a Blu-ray that has SD (i.e. DVD) quality video, but typically has HD quality audio tracks.

I have never actually seen one but it makes sense that it is just a standard def bluray. this is one way that they would release old tv series onto bluray as most seasons would probably fit onto a single bluray disc.

That makes two concerts then. I bet they are from the same company.

An SD Blu-ray is a Blu-ray release on which instead of a high-definition transfer you have a standard definition transfer. You still have lossless audio.

The reason is this:

Because the original content -- could be a concert, show, or a low-budget film - was shot on video (in this case in standard definition). What this means is that the original content cannot be presented in high-definition.

And yes, standard definition content on Blu-ray and standard definition content on DVD DO NOT LOOK THE SAME. Compression is far better on Blu-ray, as will naturally be the encoding, and you also get lossless audio.

All in all, you get the best possible presentation of the content on Blu-ray.

I would love to see TV shows currently not available on Blu-ray at least in the interim being offered on Blu-ray in SD quality where the entire season of a given show is offered on one Blu-ray disc. Sure would beat these 4-7 disc DVD boxsets of a given TV season.

Not too long ago in fact I re-authored "The X-Files: Seasons 1-9" creating one large DVD per season which includes simple DVD menus for selecting a given episode, each season fitting on one BD-R or BD-R/DL without any compression used. That's 9 Blu-ray discs for the entire TV show versus the 59 DVD's. Far more portable now obviously. Pics of the initial DVD menus I had worked up for season one shown below.

I've been telling my wife for years that some company would do this (I thought a 12 Blu Ray set of Buffy/Angel would be amazing) and no one ever has. Never understood why. How's the compression on the X-Files, is it the same as the DVD or is it better?

The Blu-ray discs I worked up for the X-Files, one per season don't alter the original audio/video. It's 1:1, no compression used. Unfortunately the discs can't be played using a hardware based Blu-ray player. I actually attempted at first to create a genuine Blu-ray of each season which could be played back in any hardware based Blu-ray player. Unfortunately the video would studder as a result when going to play a given episode. Gave up trying to figure out what I might have been doing wrong. Ended up just leaving the audio/video untouched simply creating over-sized DVD's for each season instead, then burning the resulting "video_ts" folder for a given season to BD-R. Only using the actual Blu-ray discs in this case as a storage medium, then playing the DVD folder for a given season using a software based Blu-ray player that supports DVD folder playback whether it be from my HTPC or laptop when on-the-go.

Even standard definition video without any compression would require a bitrate more than twice as high as the Blu-Ray format allows. Standard definition losslessly compressed could probably be encoded with a bitrate in the mid-30s. It wouldn't be high definition but would eliminate any and all compression artifacts found on the DVDs so it still could be a visual. improvement. Though compared to a well compressed DVD the improvement probably wouldn't be worth it for most

I have one SD Blu-ray so far, and it's from Eagle Rock Entertainment as well. Diana Krall' Live in Paris : https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Diana...lu-ray/107078/

The video is definitely better than DVD. The great thing is that the audio is 5.1 DTS-HD MA instead of DD. It's SO worth it!
I wish Live in Montreux would be released too.

I didn't know it was an SD Blu-ray until after I had already ordered it, but since the audio is the most important aspect here, I can totally live with it.

Diana Krall is my goddess.

I have the cd. Didn't know there was a Blu-ray out for that. Most excellent. On Blu-ray I do have "Diana Krall: Live in Rio" which is 1080i (1.78:1) with LPCM Stereo, DD 5.1 and DTS-HD MA 5.1 tracks. Great concert as well.

If you don't mind me asking, what software did you use to make the menus? I'm thinking about doing this for The Simpsons DVDs

Most of them are upscales. By the same terminology, we should be calling 2K-upscaled UHD discs "2K UHD" discs.

This is a native SD Blu-ray. It has a resolution of 720x576 anamorphic.
