IMAX Magic Carpet is a large format film system, using two IMAX 15/70 mm film format projectors. One of the projectors projects onto a screen in front of the audience, the second projector projects onto a screen under the audience, which is visible through a transparent floor. The system was demonstrated in Osaka in 1990, and two films were produced for the format; Flying Raft and Flowers in the Sky.

I was in Las Vegas for a conference and I had 2 hours to kill. So I went to the local IMAX theater and saw two 3D IMAX films with those glasses. This was the first one:

They reshot/reformated the beginning of Star Wars in 15/70 IMAX. Then they reshot the blowing up of the White House from Independence Day in 15/70 IMAX. All I could think was - when are they going to shoot a Hollywood movie in IMAX. 12 years later (2008) they did - The Dark Knight.

I remember the first time they showed AOTC in IMAX screens. Fun times!

It's unfortunate that so few directors are creating beautiful, stunning, lavish images that are worth seeing projected on a giant screen. James Cameron and Zack Snyder are two of the only ones, but they naturally work slower because they put so much into their movies. George Lucas used to, but he's out of the biz. Movie theaters need movies made by directors with a strong visual sense. It should be so much easier to do now with CGI, but it's amazing how with the ability to produce any image they want, so few directors have the ability to do something artistic and creative visually.
