Speaking of which, anyone who has this disc needs to watch the extra feature "Sublime Soledad" where Amy Brown discusses Soledad's extremely short life and career. She was only 27 years old when she died, leaving behind a husband and child. I think she would have been an international star had she lived a full life.
Isn't 27 the age many rock stars died?

Apparently made for TV, the second feature on this disc, Lost in New York feels rather distinct in Rollin's oeuvre yet remains distinctly Rollin.

A childish innocence has always lurked under the surface of Rollin's brand of seductive surrealism as has a clear love of the arts in general. Here we see him outright pay homage to many works of art including his own in a wary that doesn't quite makes sense, as if some child's attempt at a Godardian parable. And would you want it any other way?

As with the main feature on this disc, this isn't something for tose new to Rollin but his fans will find his at his most naked (though least nudity fillled) and surreal. rooted firmly in fantasy this is probably his strangest film.

This is probably the only Rollin film that is nearly child friendly as it replaces his standard nudity with a whimsy that belies the dark heart of New York. This isn't the satirized version of New York that now exists but it's also not the grindhouse New York of the past. It feels dangerous yet welcoming at the same time. Horrifically large and grimy, forbidding and exotic yet sans real danger. Even knife wielding strangers feel more childish than menacing and easily dispatched.

Oceans and castles aren't fully cast away but skyscrapers loom for the majority of the film, placing it in a more "real" world that he generally treads but the way it is shot is so unusual that I'm sure even citizens of the city when it was shot would be disorientated. And of course, he couldn't resist a graveyard scene.

I've always been a huge fan of fantasy films as they lend themselves to surreallism more than any other genre, so this pairing of Rollin and Fantasy made a perfect marriage for a film that no one else could have made. At times it seems like a swan song, as if Rollin figured this to be his last tango with cinema, but I'm glad he had a few works left in him even if I've only been able to watch one of them so far.

I've come to terms with the fact that I'm just going to buy every Franco film I can...even his worst films are worth watching once...at least for me.

As with seemingly a third of his films, this is based on the infamous writings of de Sade. Unusually though is that it appears to be a period piece and teh music is orchestral instead of his usual jazz. Otherwise this is pretty standard Franco. Sex, sadism, nudity, masturbation, questions of intentional art or happenstance, roving cameras, it's all here.

Somehow though, it all feels rather tame, at least for Franco. It's dreamlike and depraved as usual but he shows a surprising restraint. Hardcore does sneak it's way in, as we get some unsimulated licking and fondling, along with
plenty of nudity and sexual situations, so don't worry; it's still plenty sleazy.

Franco managed to create a nightmareish film that I felt was among his better works.

I don't have to say much about this one. A small town with a secret, events centered around a Valentine's day dance and an underground mine. I had a good time with this one, despite the theatrical cut not being particularly gory.

As with many early talkies there's a lot of exaggerated body motion, though I was surprised how strong the slapstick element was here. There was also an interesting scene early on where we saw two men showering together and while played for laughs it's easy to read further into it.

The comedy that ensues, in regards to a non-existent wife is frightfully uncomfortable rather than funny, or at least it was for me, as none of the humor lands quite right...or perhaps this was the intent?

The romance story line didn't really work for me either. But as far as the film as a spectacle; three's some wonderful sequences here with a few fun dance numbers. And the whole crash sequence is fantastic and took a whole new meaning a few years later.
Thanks for this, had never heard of it but after watching a few clips I ordered ...this is pure light one up and enjoy.

If anyone is looking for an uplifting flick to watch with the family tonight while digesting turkey, I highly recommend this one. There's something for everyone:
[Show spoiler]a nun, raping of young girls, raping of nun, nude young girls, nude nun, vaginal stabbing, non-vaginal stabbing, bashing of woman's head with an iron etc.
Enjoy, kids!

Ok so I know I'm in and out of this thread but hey it's a celebration today right? The celebration of midnight sales

My question to all you fellow 42nd Street exploitation appreciators.......which 80s slashers have the biggest gazongas?

I watched RUSH WEEK from VinSyn and was enamored with Kathleen Kinmont

I'm pretty sure Re-animator has some big melons

What other 80s horror/slashers delivers those Ds and up?
