Google Chrome dispay issue

On my android, all of a sudden,
my tabs are showing up as rows of squares when I hit the tab number square on the upper right corner.
I prefer single tabs to scroll up and down, I have no idea how I caused the switch to happen, and I cannot get it to go back to where I had it for years.
I tried restarting my phone and the tabs are still the same, still not the way they were.
I guess the technical term is stacked tabs, that's what I want to go back to on my phone.
From what I have heard this has happened to some other people as well, Google had no right to be pulling this malarkey on people.
