1. Higher video bit rate
2. Blu-ray style navigation menu
3. Access to special features
4. Ability to purchase.
5. Zero ads

I'm assuming that the interface and performance on an Apple TV is vastly improved.

Apple+ on Roku is literally the worst streaming app I have ever used.

I'd keep one just to have access to the Criterion Channel.

PF is no longer owned by LG. You have to buy the Paramount version to get the 4k.

Not sure if this was mentioned already but My Best Friend’s Wedding is now DV. Previously it was just 4K.

Watching Total Recall with Dolby Atmos and the audio is out of sync. Anyone else experience this issue?

Posted a few days back but got no reply, all my 4k movies are out of sync with audio. DD 5.1 has a slight lag by atmos is really bad, only happened when I updated by ATV 4K 2017 to tvOS 16.1.
When I watch the movies through the atv app in my tv (sony x90j) no audio issues at all.

The ATV 4K does offer Itunes extras and may have apps the TV doesnt - like Paramount+ - but if you have the ATV+ TV app that can access Itunes library (not just ATV+) then you may as well spend the £150 on something else.

Even on a C8 the TV apps are quicker to access and even work better - like more DV/Atmos support and iPlayer and Youtube 4K/HLG for example.

The higher bit-rate with Apple devices is a myth - sad to see it still being repeated long after someone thought they saw a difference one time. Each film is uploaded as a number of encodes at different resolutions and bit-rates to cater for different setups and internet connections but the app has the same access to the best encode whether its on a TV or ATV 4K.

Regarding lipsync is this with an external audio device? Is is video lead or audio lead?

Prove it please. Happy to be proven wrong. The different encode and resolutions is part of adaptive streaming applied when the speed is too variable especially when it lower than indicated max bit rate of the stream but beyond a certain speed (say 45 Mbos), the indicative numbers are the maximum and you are the getting the max quality.

Try the same movie with FireTV Stick and see what the DEV HUD reports. Also check the link in my signature.

More than likely because AppleTV decodes everything to PCM and then sends it to your receiver. Atmos is sent as Dolby MAT. So there's going to be a delay no matter what.

While some sticks may not have the processing or network capability to handle the highest bit-rate encodes this isnt really proof of complete restriction to Apple devices.

This audio decoding isnt high latency so the output of the ATV ought to be sync as a starting point- what can cause issues is TV processing.

If the ATV output is passed through an audio device device first and then to the TV which has something like Trumotion enabled then the audio can lead but there's likely an audio delay setting available to help.

Or, in some TVs with audio output on ARC the wrong audio delay is applied for a given picture mode causing the video to lead which can only be corrected in TV settings.

So to diagnose the issue it's important to know the system details and whether its the audio or video that's leading.

But without the Atmos that's supposed to be on the disc. I used to wonder if Sony withholds the Atmos from iTunes because of the free upgrade thing, but they are so incredibly inconsistent with it I can only assume incompetence.

Not about withholding but just being inconsistent and lazy. Sony has been all over the place for nearly a year.

So you are simply going by what's on paper and not by any scientific comparisons?

Unless you’re doing a side by side comparison and being critical of every little pixel I’d be betting you wouldn’t even notice a difference between the two.
Where you will most definitely notice a difference is in that one has iTunes Extras and the other doesn’t.

Remember those days when we used to just sit back and enjoy films, that’s somewhat lost these days as seems most are too concerned as to what the bit rates are or is it playing in 4K and is HDR or Dolby Vision being activated or not.

Fair enough but remember this is Blu-ray forum where the visual aspects are shred into its last atom and discussed.

Thing is it’s not just here as we’re all guilty of it to an extent.
I’ve lost count of how many times either something hasn’t played back in 4K or HDR which you then spend the next half hour or so trying to work out why instead of just enjoying the film Lol.

Those VHS days were much simpler times.
