Default New Wii Owner

Just got a Wii with Sports and Resort. Haven't played too much yet, but had a few basics questions.

Do you have to use the motion controller for all games, or can you use their classic controller? Games I'm interested in are Resident Evil 4, Madden, NHL, and Tiger Woods.

Can you get older/classic Nintendo games on your Wii, and how?

Has anyone upgraded from the given composite cables to one of the component cable packs that are sold? Is it worth it?

The stock controller can be used with all games, but it doesn't necessarily have to be. A lot of games support the Classic Controller in addition to other controllers. If you look on the back of the game's case, you'll see which controllers are recommended. I prefer the Classic Controller as well, whenever it is an option. That controller does not have the motion sensitivity circuitry, though, so you can only really use it for games where motion controls aren't used.

Classic NES/SNES/N64 (and other console brand) games can be downloaded through the Wii Shop Channel. In there you will see Virtual Console, which is where you get the games. I have several. You just pick which game you want, then download it. It downloads to your console. You need to buy most of them, and that can be done with a credit card right there in the interface. Once the game is downloaded, it appears as an icon in your Wii menu, just as if it were an inserted disc. Every downloaded game takes a space in that menu. By the way, you can reorganize the menu by hovering your hand cursor over an icon, and then pressing A and B at the same time and holding down on it. You then "grab" the icon, and can drag it around and then drop it wherever you want. This is cool if you like to organize (I don't like the way the Wii is organized by default so I'm all over this).

I have component cables and they are a very worthy investment. You can get them from Monoprice for dirt-cheap. I have used the Monoprice cables and the Monster version for when my setup was a little different (I required a longer cable run), and I couldn't tell the difference between the two. They are much better than the composite, though. Much better.

1- Games that use the classic controller:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...sic_Controller
2- Yes, through the Virtual Console. From the main Wii money go to the shop channel and then you can search for games by system, genre, etc. You have to use Wii points, which you can either buy at retail or use a credit card to put credit into your account. Access to the Wii Shop channel obviously requires you to be online.

List of games on the virtual console:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...(North_America)

3- It definitely made a difference on my 56" display.

I hope this helps.

Edit: Whoops, Brettallica beat me to it. Sorry about that!

Since most of your questions were answered. I'll just add that you can also use Gamecube games on your Wii as well.

Another vote for monoprice.com for all your cabling needs also. I buy all my cables (HDMI) via them.

I have not tried any other controllers, but have been told all Gamecube games are compatible.

I have tried a component cable I picked up off Amazon for $4.00 but have not been able to get it to work. Not sure if it is a cable issue, Wii issue, of Onkyo issue.

For a Wii component cable pack, is there really much difference between Monoprice and others on Amazon like Monster, Belkin, Cables Unlimited, Nyko, Vista, IMAX, NG, mycarryingcase, etc.?

I wouldn't imagine there being much difference. You can't go wrong with Monster, Belkin, and Nyko; even the others are fine. I mean if they're cheap, just go for it.

You don't need wii points cards to get virtual console games. You can buy codes from amazon for the games without having to juggle points cards. For example Super Metroid:

I've been looking at getting Resident Evil 4 for the Wii. Under $12 on Amazon seems pretty cheap to me? Has anyone used any of the Wii guns that you can use on games like this? Are they any better or worse than the classic controller or motion sensor?

I haven't been online with my Wii yet. Is it the same price on Amazon as in the Wii store?

Because of the way the controls are mapped in RE4 (on the wiimote, you hold down the trigger (B) to aim and press (A) to shoot), hardly any of the gun accessories make sense for it. There is one more recent gun, from Nyko I believe, that allows you to switch the trigger to be A and the thumb button to be B, but I don't remember what it's called.

You can also just add points with a credit card in the Wii Shop Channel. No need to ever buy a physical points card if you don't want to.

So, you use the motion sensor, not the classic controller on RE4?

Correct. And this is one game where the motion controls are superior, in my opinion.

My Wii has been eating dust for over a year now. Decided to put it on Marktplaats (something like Ebay, but for Dutch people).

If you want to use a gun, go and get The House of the Dead: Overkill, awesome game!

No time for games. The wii probably had the best line0up of games last year.

Don't think they had.
