Well, I guess we all have to start somewhere. After months of lurking on a couple of these custom cover forums, I'm finally going to contribute something. Here's my first attempt at a custom Steelbook design.

For the record, I'm not actually a fan of these particular Michael Bay movies, but I am a Transformers "nerd", hence picking this to start with.

Just stumbled across this thread, these are some really incredible artwork ideas. Makes me sad that they don't actually exist. Unfortunately I don't have anything to contribute, but keep the great working coming. Wow.

U mean a blank PSD? Check page 8 or 9.

Can anyone point me to a guide to do the spine. Someone posted a guide for me here that helped me a lot with the actual steelbook but I had no luck with the spine. The steelbook looks too odd without something on the spine.

Messed around with the hangover steel from BB. I figured how to get the spine out but it wasn't pretty. When I put it back, it was all bent.

Here's the spine. For those who don't know, it's glued on and you basically have to pull it off from the glue from the outside of the steel. When I glued it back on, I wasn't able to get it straight again because I had to force it by pulling it apart from the steelbook and it got bent pretty bad.

For the spine:

Put the kettle on. Once the water is boiling, fill a large enough bowl so the spine can sit in the water fully submerged (you will have taken off the front and back face plates). Leave it for about 10 minutes, the glue will have softened and you can then very carefully get the thinnest piece of plastic/ knife edge you can find and very very slowly get it underneath the top of the spine, and slide downwards, you don't need to insert your tool fully underneath the spine, just halfway in will do to loosen the glue somewhat to do be able to pull if off with your fingers without bending, I find bending will occur if the tool I use isn't thin enough and I slide it fully underneath the steel spine.

Hope that makes sense. I really have to make a youtube video on this!

Thanks a lot for the info. I got what your saying. Will test it out with another steelbook later when I get good prints. And yeah, a youtube video on doing the spine would be great. Popping out the inside is pretty simple once you've done it enough time.

Thanks a lot for the info, would love it if you could make a YT video!

Also, where's the best place to get the correct size prints?

I measured the inside of the face plate and the spine with a ruler. I then created a document in photoshop with those dimensions.

I've been fitting spine art for over a year now on mine and have got it down to perfection, I think anyways. Here's my best tip for removing it: Use a hair dryer on hot setting and just slowly move it across the spine a few times, about 2cm from the spine. Then use a scalpal or craft knife and very carefully edge the sharp tip underneath one end of the spine. Once it's under very slowly slide the knife like a sawing motion until you reach the other end of the spine, remember to keep the knife blade flat. Because you've heated the glue the spine comes away very easily. From turning on the hair dryer to the spine being removed should only take 3-4 minutes. Hope this helps.

Hey guys, I've uploaded a tutorial video onto youtube showing how to remove the steelbook spine and also adding some spine artwork. Check it out, don't forget to give me a thumbs up if you like it.

I made a mock-up for Disney's short film Paperman (which is fantastic, go watch if you haven't seen it). One can dream...
