The movie has 2.0 tracks in English, German, and two commentary tracks. Orlando Eastwood states, "The release I have, from Best Entertainment, is all upscaled from SD and it's 1080/50i. The German dub sounds new and has a new techno-ish score, however one scene in the German is missing so it goes over to English with German subs. The subs are removable but are automatically on even if you have the film set to English. So, mid way during the film, German subs will pop up for that one scene. Now, onto Fright Night aka Dementia 13, the film is upscaled to 1080/50i and only has German dubbing on the disc. Even Dementia 13 is 4:3 non-anamorphic widescreen transfer that has the black bars on the top and bottom and then upscaled so it has bars on all sides. Also, Dementia 13 only has German dubbing. No English audio is present for the film. It's horrible quality." ![]() ![]() -Germany. Region B. Unknown Quality. Presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.37:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, George Romero's Night of the Living Dead arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Criterion. Brand new MoMA4K transfer. "It hasn't been mentioned very much, but the MoMA restoration of Night of the Living Dead, the source used for the Criterion blu-ray, is the first and only restoration of the film that George Romero was able to review and approve prior to its being released. He also oversaw the restoration of the film's soundtrack together with Gary Streiner, which was also the first time that original sound elements could be located and utilized. Romero was not involved with nor approved any restorations of NOTLD prior to the MoMA restoration. Any "director approved" labels were simply marketing hype, since the restorations were indeed authorized by Image Ten. The MoMA restoration is also the first high definition transfer of the original 35mm camera negative." - Jim Cirronella. The following text appears inside the leaflet provided with this Blu-ray release: "This restoration by the Museum of Modern Art and The Film Foundation, with funding provided by the George Lucas Family Foundation and the Celeste Bartos Fund for Film Preservation, was undertaken from a new digital transfer created in 4K resolution on Cineric's wet-gate film scanner, primarily from the original 35mm camera negative. For the few seconds that proved impossible to scan from this element -- approximately 1 percent of the feature film -- a 35mm fine-grain from 1968 was used. The transfer was supervised by director George A. Romero, coscreenwriter John A. Russo, sound engineer Gary R. Streiner, and producer Russell W. Streiner. After the evaluation of eighteen separate source elements, the original monaural soundtrack was remastered under the supervision of Romero and Gary Streiner from the original quarter-inch mix masters, quarter-inch premix audio tape, a final composite 16mm magnetic track, and the 16mm magnetic mix units. The restoration was performed at Audio Mechanics, led by John Polito. Transfer supervisors: Eric Nyari/Cineric, New York; George A. Romero; John A. Russo; Gary R. Streiner; Russell W. Streiner; Katie Trainor/Museum of Modern Art, New York. Colorist: Daniel DeVincent/Cineric." The film boasts the type of consistently pleasing delineation and fluidity that very high-quality 4K restorations are known to deliver. Even the tiny portion of footage that was sourced from the fine-grain will be practically indistinguishable to trained eyes because density levels remain very solid. The biggest improvements are introduced by the wide range of vastly superior nuances, which make both the darker indoor/nighttime and daylight outdoor footage look terrific (see screencaptures #2, 4 and 18). Rather predictably, grain exposure is excellent and there is an overall tightness that comes with it that gives the film an excellent organic appearance. There are no traces of compromising sharpening adjustments. The grading is very convincing -- the blacks are very stable and lush but not boosted, while the grays and whites have wonderful ranges of rich nuances. Additionally, it is clear that extensive cleanup work was performed to remove all traces of age-related imperfections because the film looks spotless. Image stability is excellent. (Note: This is a Region-A "locked" Blu-ray release. Therefore, you must have a native Region-A or Region-Free player in order to access its content). Extras: George Romero's "Night of the Living Dead" (1968) arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Criterion. The supplemental features on the disc include original trailers; multiple archival interviews with cast and crew members;' two archival audio commentaries; previously unseen footage; and lot more. The release also arrives with an illustrated leaflet/poster featuring critic Stuart Klawans' essay "Mere Anarchy is Loosed" and technical credits. In English, with optional English SDH subtitles for the main feature. I don't think he has any real control over that to this day. When they did the Elite transfer back in the day they copyrighted that to him and Elite but maybe he needs Elite's permission to use that as well. The whole thing with Night is weird, it may in fact be owned by the Wiensteins at this point and that would be tricky because of their legal issues. However we may get lucky and get a Vivendi release since it seems they are handling the Wiensteins catalog. Who knows?

The 30th Anniversary release of Night of the Living Dead on dvd is not the original release but the original release with new scenes and a new soundtrack. There is the original release included on the DVD but the soundtrack is new. Most Night of the Living Dead fans consider the 30th Anniversary release to be blasphemy. I have the 30th Anniversary on DVD in limited and regular release and for what it was, it is enjoyable, but not true to the original Romero film from 1968. Some Reviews review: http://www.mediacircus.net/notld.html http://www.thedigitalbits.com/review...ivingdead.html "The disc quality is really good, although when the new scenes are inserted you can tell - how could you not? Another pox on this film is the re-scoring by Scott Vladimir Licina, which is so bad that I'm going to just ignore it. There are two versions of this film included on the DVD, the 30th Anniversary re-edit and the original cut with Licina's new score (which, again, sucks so bad that I'm not even gonna talk about it). I can't believe anyone could make this film suck, but congratulations Mr. Russo - you did it in spades. Russo is credited as the "writer/director" of the new scenes in this version. May zombies eat his liver." Surely at some point, someone will release the 30th Anniversary release on Blu-Ray as well. |

Again, the more recent one from Weinstein (which I pictured) is also approved by Romero... and includes slightly better PQ, although some of the Millennium extras didn't make it over. I have both of those on DVD and that'll keep me satisfied until we get an "official" BD release.

I went with the Happinet release from Japan, and I'm more than happy with it. I narrowed it down to region A compatible releases and from there, due to a lack of info available about the Aussie release, I narrowed it down to the Forgotten Films release in the US and the Japanese one that I ended up getting. Between those 2 the US release is missing footage and is essentially a bare-bones release while the Japanese one contains the complete film and some nice extras, so the choice was obvious. The transfer is also amazing. The only flaw is a couple of very brief vertical lines in one scene. They couldn't be visible for more than a few seconds, and I didn't even see them the first time. Overall I think it's the one.
