Richer Sounds' Leicester branch is excited to announce a free special event, the 'Top Tech Showcase', and is inviting people to experience and compare some of the most cutting-edge home entertainment technology currently available. Big questions such as “Wired or wireless?”, “Projector or TV?”, "What is 4K?", and much more, can be answered.

Two rooms will be set up with complete home cinema systems simultaneously playing Star Trek Into Darkness on Blu-ray. Each has a projector, a TV and surround sound set up, so visitors can freely walk between rooms and easily compare the performance of the different technologies on display.

Equipment that will be shown includes the brand new Panasonic TXL65WT600 and the Samsung UE55F9000, both of which are 4K Ultra HD 3D Smart TVs. Also on display will be an Epson 1080p projector, a JVC 4K e-shift projector, a Sonos wireless 5.1 surround sound system and a wired Yamaha/Monitor Audio 5.1 surround sound system. 4K content and 4K upscaling will be on demo.

At the end of the day, the human eye can only perceive the difference to a degree. From what I have read and seen, you need at least a +100" screen sitting at normal viewing distances to see the difference between HD and UHD. Well, it is a push for the big screen tv to stay relevant and if 4k is a flop, we may be seeing the dying days of the big screen tv in the next ten years or so as more of the younger gen use tablets and smartphones. Personally, I hope 4k rescues the tv market as the consequences are too much for this film fan to bare!

4K is not the issue. Price is the issue. Lunatics are trying to sell an 84" television for over $30,000 dollars, and that's not trying to save a market.

No one is using phones or tablets to watch movies by choice. It's a cheap alternative for people without a place of their own to view content. As long as the same people who market a big screen are making more money with small screens, you have this issue.

Saving a market means paying too much, for too little.

I don’t follow those broadcast shows so I have to ask questions after-the-fact.

Not sure if Dewayne is a member here, but I am familiar with lyris (David). So question to David, or Dewayne if he be listening/monitoring…
Let’s make it simple to begin with and stick first with SDR rather than the newest generation of HDR displays.

Do you or DeWayne keep a database including all the monitors you’ve recalibrated with regards to drift (be it in color temperature or luminance)? And if so, could you provide some numbers, e.g. how many actual recalibrations and at what time interval (s) they’ve been performed and what you’ve discovered….as this service is thoroughly documented for regularly used hero and client monitors in post houses by other pro calibrators that routinely service professional content creation facilities where more frequent recalibration is needed than of that for critical-eyed consumers.

If you don’t keep such accurate records, generally, how often do you recommend consumers have their respective (due to differences in stability) LCDs, plasmas, or OLEDs recalibrated? Please don’t tell me that it depends upon when/if your serious clients determine that for you based upon them calling you that they’ve noticed a change, because viewers’ eyes adapt to almost anything over the course of time….with many of them not even being aware of the out of tolerance changes.

Also, in your travels, have you noticed any significant difference in recalibration need based not just upon the model or type of display technology, usage, etc.; but also, due differences in the environment in which they are used (e.g. Florida vs. Maine)? Because my experience as regards to the recalibration requirement for colorists and editors is limited to rooms with controlled temperature and humidity, 24 hrs./day.

With regards to recalibration of monitors used in Hollywood post houses, record keeping regarding stability indicates, from best to worst stability….

LCD(LED) > OLED (given lesser data as the display tech is relatively new) > plasma

Nevertheless, recalibration averages about every 6 months. For a handful of demanding colorists…every 3 - 4 months

They do bring up a good point about who use a WOW disc (or similar) or get settings off the internet (like I do), their sets are still not calibrated. They are just set up. Calibration is a more detailed and sophisticated process. The reason I bring this up because I've seen countless posts of those who say they calibrated their sets with either a disc or got their settings off the web (I'm guilty of it too) when their sets are not calibrated.
