In the past, people have measured the overall bitrate of content sent to Apple TV devices as having higher/the highest overall, compared to content delivered to non-Apple endpoints.

Looks like Coraline and Paranorman switched to 4K in the US, but only the new, resisted SKU. The old SKUs did not upgrade.

That 3 year old linked thread actually says the ATV+ service has a higher bit-rate than other streaming services - something thats always been evident from the PQ of its DV/Atmos content - and that thread includes "But if you're getting 4K throughput the stream should be identical on an Apple TV 4K and Fire TV device"

For a purchasing decision there simply is no guarantee youre going to see a PQ improvement by buying an ATV 4K device over using the ATV app on a TV like LG - buy one because you want Itunes extras or are into the Apple ecosystem or need some app thats only available on the TvOS .

While I agree there is "no guarantee" of improved PQ, people have indeed measured higher bit-rates, directly to the Apple TV vs. other hardware. You can do your own research.

I am not sure about AppleTV+ but either you listen to people who frequently measure, compare and publish or prove others wrong without your own findings.

It is possible you may not see any difference but on my 77A80J, I am seeing differences from 8.5 ft.

Does anyone here own Krampus on iTunes? I could have sworn it was in 4K not to long ago and now it's in HD. Can anyone check theirs?

it was never 4K digitally, only the physical disc is 4K.

It was 4K SDR on FandangoNow (one of their exclusives) but never on iTunes. Not sure if those who got it on FN have it 4K on Vudu now. It is still hidden there so I would guess so but can’t buy it. Those SDR exclusives were never very good transfers anyway.

Be hilarious if the only reason Apple TV had higher bitrates was due to the audio being decoded to full fat PCM on output and that was part of their measurement.

In any case can one actually "see" the difference anyway?

It’s not though, the Developers HUD shows the bit rates for both video and audio separately so when referring to PQ they’ll be using the Video bit rate info as reference.

Unless you’re doing a side by side comparison and being critical of every pixel I doubt many would notice a difference.

Apparently it’s from something called Away via Netflix, I just used it as an example of how the information is shown.

The decoded PCM only appears on the HDMI output (which also carries the decompressed video). Obviously nobody would measure the streaming bandwidth there.

Dang guess I didn't notice last year. I watched it off disc and also digitally last Xmas. Guess I will be buying the disc today so we can watch it. I have a full 5.1.2 setup with OLED so I want to use it to the fullest.

I only see one Coraline. I see what appears to be the same one in my library and if I search. (I expected to see the one in my library and one from a search that I didn't own...)

In 2016, I redeemed the code from my BluRay, but only got SD.
In 2017, I did a Vudu D2D for HD.
Obviously, I don't expect a 4k upgrade. But I thought I'd see mine and a new one.

That's appears to be this one https://www.blu-ray.com/itunes/Coraline-iTunes/184572/ but the two older listings also redirect to there.

I really liked that. I has some sciency issues with the communications, but it was a decent series.

Are you searching through the TV app? The TV app just brings up one listing (with the ability to play the old, as well as purchase the new one).

If you search the iTunes Store app, it shows only the new 4K/DV listing.

Search is misleading you. Click on the thumbnail and scroll down to How to Watch. You will see one tile labeled “Play (purchased)” and one labeled “Buy ($14.99)”. I assume the latter is the Laika Studios relist.

Thanks. That looks different than I recall seeing in the past, is that a new way of keeping the separate together?
