Is Dolby Vision worth upgrading for?

I've had my beloved 65JS9500 since 2015. Nothing wrong with it, and I still love it very much, but I think I'm finally breaking down and deciding that the TVs of the last year or two are too good to ignore. I hate, hate, hate losing 3D - in fact I may just move this to the bedroom just to have it for when I want to watch a 3D film - but everything I read tells me that HDR performance has significantly improved since I got the JS9500, and also the introduction of Dolby Vision and/or HDR10+.

I'd be curious from people that may have owned or viewed a JS9500 before what you think a real significant upgrade would be. It must be at least 65". I don't really want to go over $2500, unless something in that neighborhood is really worth it.

The 3 TVs I keep seeing when I look up reviews are the Vizio PQ65, Sony x900f, and Samsung Q8FN. What would you all recommend between these, or perhaps some other TV that I haven't come across yet. I only want to pull the trigger if it is indeed a big improvement over my JS9500.

I'm also considering waiting to see what the price is on the upcoming Vizio Quantum X. And now I've also seen that a 75" Sony x900e is a very affordable $1400. It's very tempting to get a 75" TV for that price, however it does not come with Dolby Vision. Is it worth it to pass on a 75" so cheap to have Dolby Vision?

I've been reading reviews and it seems each of the TVs I've listed is received very positively, but I wanted to hear from actual members here. Is it worth upgrading from my JS9500? Thanks for any advice and suggestions.

For good HDR on a LED TV, you should be prioritising FALD over any specific form of HDR. That will give you more benefit first and foremost, and since you already have a FALD TV you'd be taking a backwards step with edge-lit.

If you go for Samsung Q8, it needs to be the Q8D or the newer Q80s, the others are edge-lit. I think you're OK with the Sony x900f and the Vizio PQ65.

Dolby Vision is good, but I personally don't think it's worth upgrading an already good TV for since you still have to pick and choose which dynamic HDR format is best for you and can't just pick one to do them all. Not yet anyway, if we end up with a one for all HDR TV with both HDR10+ and DV, then you might find it too good to miss.

Ah, for some odd reason I was under the impression the Q8FN was FALD. Must have got it confused with something else then. Thanks for that because I definitely don't want an edge lit TV.

So you're suggestion would be to stay put with the JS9500 for now?

The other thing that intrigued me is that my TV produces a max of something like 930-950 nits, where the Vizio produces a max of 2,000.

There is some confusion here - I've checked and it's known as the Q8DN in the UK. So we are talking about the same core TV, just different regional model numbers.

Yep. Since you already have a fine TV I would personally hang on until the HDR market matures further, and keep your 3D too.

Yes, you'll get some improvements now at the expense of 3D by upgrading, but where do you stop?

I've been thinking I might move the JS9500 to the bedroom if I do decide to get a new TV. And if I ever feel like I need to watch a 3D movie in the home theater I can move it back down for one night.

I was in Best Buy earlier and they had a Sony Z9F open box for under $2,000... regularly priced at $3,500 or so. Seems like quite a steal.

Anyone think this would be a worthy upgrade over the JS9500?

Yes it looks better than hdr10 and hdr10plus is pretty much the same as hdr10, if you want to have the best hdr experience possible then you need dolby vision.

HDR10+ uses dynamic metadata like Dolby Vision. It's probably as good, plus there's no fee to use it unlike Dolby Vision. However if streaming platforms and Blu-ray favour DV then I don't suppose it matters how good HDR10+ is.

Dolby Vision Absolutely worth the upgrade ���� you will need it sooner or later.
