The LG C9 beats out the mighty Sony OLED A9G in Shootout. Is this the upset of the year?

The LG is the best bang for the buck and is just as good as the Sony and even better in some areas. That shootout was a blind test so no one chooses a tv based on brand, only on picture quality. The Panny is good too, but not available in the US.

This is the most unexplainable question of the TV model year. At our 2019 TV Shootout we had all top professional video experts as judges, mostly Hollywood post production colorists and finishers.

All of our professional expert video panel of experts exclusively use and or own either LG's OLED or Panasonic OLED, none have used or worked with Sony's OLED before participating as a panelists on our TV Shootout so if they had any bias it would be towards LG, but Sony came out on top of our evaluation.

I brought in Joel Silver, Scott Wilkinson, and Kevin Miller to present our program that included test patterns and then we played selected content that exploits the findings of the test patterns so we can all see how what we see on a test pattern can also be seen with real content.

Sony's A9G had better motion resolution, better low lumiinancee detail and better up-conversion of low resolution content. Sony's A9G also delivered a deeper MLL.

LG's OLED has higher peak luminance when measured in the standard 10% window, but Sony's peak luminance was higher than LG's with a 2% window size.

All of the judges preferred LG's webOS Smart user interface and most importantly in the end the image performance differences between these top rated OLED TVs was minimal to moderate at best.
