Sony announced their 2021 lineup today at Virtual CES: Lineup discussion starts about the 5:40 mark.

I've started dedicated discussion threads for Sony's 2021 LCDs. There's always enough interest in Sony's TVs that I thought having separate threads in addition to this "general discussion thread" were worth it, to make things less messy. Many are going to be interested in one set but not the others, people will ask questions about a specific model, owners will want to discuss their TV with others who own the same model, etc.

I'm looking at the 75" hope it's not too much more than last year's model. May have to wait until BF for a price drop.

Jk. I mean, regarding the viewing distance 9.5’ away from a 83” screen is good. Whether the design of the room itself allows for that size is a different thing.

Charts of recommended seating distances for display sizes are, unfortunately, not very consistent (and they seem to vary depending on time since resolutions have changed quite a bit in the past couple of decades), but according to the one below (which is more detailed and even includes number ranges to appreciate the higher resolution) you can sit as close as 6’ from an 85” display. Also, OLEDs aren’t super bright either so eye fatigue shouldn’t be an issue sitting that close to one.

I do think 6’ is a bit much for 85” but 8’ seems like the midway point for 4K resolution, so at 9.5’, 83” should still be fine.

4k isn’t the issue. I’m concerned about 1080p/1080i material. Hard to tell picture quality in the showrooms.
Going from a 60”, I can play it safe by getting a 65” but I’d really hate not going with a 77” a week later.

I’d suggest trying to find a local home theater dealer. They’re usually open to letting you try the displays they sell with your own content. So you can take a few blu-rays and 4K discs to try a 77” and an 83” once it’s available.

I will say that upscaling on both the Sony and LG OLEDs is pretty solid. It won’t make 1080p/i content look like native 4K, but it will be enough that the pixelation from 1080p won’t be there in most of the content (so the lower resolution should also not be a problem if you sit closer or get a bigger display). If you let the player upscale, just make sure you get one that has good upscaling.

Also, keep in mind most projectors used in most theaters are still ‘only’ 2K in resolution (basically 1080p). So unless you notice pixelation artifacts on those huge screens, then it should not be a problem at home either, unless you watch streaming where the compression can be pretty bad. The only screens that use 4K are usually the premium ones like IMAX, Dolby, and most Alamo Drafthouse theaters. But the great majority of screens use 2K projectors still.

I’ll most likely end up with the 77” Sony by mid February at the latest. Hopefully there’ll be some sales by then.
