I want to give my neighbor a brand new TV as a "thank you" gift. He is a retired nurse practitioner who provided me with free home healthcare after my having had four operations this summer.
His current TV is an ancient 27" LCD that has a dark shadow covering about half the screen area and that also randomly turns itself off and on; this TV is insufferable! It only receives broadcast TV signals from an indoor antenna. The only other connected device is a dinosaur of a DVD player and a suspect condition VCR. I am thinking of getting him a 65" LED TV. At least he could stream with it. My budget is about $1K. I read some reviews that claim that the Hisense U8G is a superior TV compared to the Sony X90J and more affordable to boot, but I am unfamiliar with the Hisense brand. I am open to other recommendations beyond these two brands and models as well. Last edited by Vilya; 12-23-2021 at 05:37 PM. |

His stand is easily big enough for a TV of any size, so no issue there. Thanks for the Hisense recommendation. |

Good for you Vilya.
Great minds thinking sort-of alike I guess. I bought my brother a 55" Sony X90J for Xmas this year. Its to replace the hella-burned in plasma TV in his bedroom. He's had a busy couple of years as an EMT / hospital backup worker. ![]() |

That's good stuff Vilya! I don't think you can go wrong with the Sony X90J; he's going to be over the moon with the size and brightness of it compared to his current TV. I'd feel good about gifting someone a Sony. What with the better quality control, a sensible android operating system and remote, plus sony's color and image processing. Now you have to come up with a clever way to surprise him

Good on you, many blessing to come your way..
I think the Sony X90J is a good tv plus if you buy it from Costco it comes a 5yr warranty. me myself just got my mom the X80J 75" for $950 not the best picture quality but she don't care just wanted a big tv for news and her lifetime movies lol |

I’d recommend that Hisense U8G. Great contrast, great colors, good picture processing. I think it’s better than the Sony imo overall. It also seems to have similar smart features like that Sony.
If I were to gift a TV to my parents that’s probably the one I’d go with. |

Thank you all for the advice given; the opinions here are divided pretty evenly between the Hisense U8G and the Sony X90J.
The 65" Sony X90J costs $200 more than the 65" Hisense U8G, which is not an issue, but I could use that difference to get him BOTH the Hisense U8G and a new blu-ray player (make and model undecided) to replace his relic of a DVD player. Just an idea that came to me this morning. Last edited by Vilya; 12-23-2021 at 02:41 PM. |

2 years ago my younger brother purchased a TCL 65" from Walmart for $399 (Xmas sale). Not a reference TV but suffices for their use. It is a Roku based TV. Amazon has some TCL 65" for < $700. |

In this case, I could decide by just flipping a coin as any TV that I buy will be leaps and bounds better than what he has now. I am leaning very heavily towards buying the Hisense U8G as it should work very well in either a dark or bright room. It can reach over 1500 nits and should come with sun block. ![]() Another nice thing is that if I purchase the Hisense U8G by Dec. 31st, Hisense offers a 100 day "no regrets" policy where the TV can be returned for a full refund up to 100 days from the date of delivery. That's a very generous trial period. Merry Christmas, slimdude, and to everyone else; thank you all for your comments. |

I ordered the 65" Hisense U8G tonight. I guess back ordered might be more accurate as delivery is estimated for February 2-3, 2022!
![]() Now to consider adding a blu-ray player. I very much doubt that my neighbor would ever buy a 4K disc, so I think a blu-ray player is sufficient. It would likely be an improvement over his antique DVD player which is so old that it may not even have a HDMI connection. I can't wait to see his reaction when the new TV arrives! I hope that it will serve him well. ![]() Edit: An hour after placing the order, the delivery estimate has been revised to Jan. 3-6, 2022. ![]() Last edited by Vilya; 12-27-2021 at 04:26 AM. |

I don't know about adding an Echo Dot/ Google Mini; adding a blu-ray player is all the accessorizing that I can afford at this time. I think that it would be more useful. There are not that many plain ol' blu-ray players to choose from; I was considering the Sony BDP-S6700, but I have only begun my search. Any recommendations would be welcome. |

Vilya, So kind of both of you to each other 💕
Take a look at some of these blu-ray players (make sure you choose a region-free one!) for your neighbor (if you could afford it I’d go for a 4K region-free player as he could future proof down the line ![]() Blu-rays: https://www.220-electronics.com/regi...y-players.html 4Ks: https://www.220-electronics.com/regi...d_blu_ray.html |

I do not envision him importing blu-rays or buying 4K discs. He may not buy blu-rays even with a new player, but at least it should make his DVDs look the best that they can. ![]() |
