got a question for you? how are you connecting your equipment?

what devices are you using, and how are they connected? do you go through receiver? straight to the TV?

My TV must have been an early HDTV because it has no HDMI ports and nothing but composite/component for sound. So I am forced to use the official PS3 Sony brand component cables. My TV only has one component input so I have to run everything through a phillips A/V switcher. I use the 80GB PS3 to play my blu-rays. I am using the 7669 method on the Spider-man 3 Blu-ray.

the problem I see is you are sharing one set of picture settings for multiple sources...settings that are good for HD will not be correct for SD and vice versa.

Settings that look good for the Bluray will not be ideal for DVD...you have to either meet half way and share the settings, or set it to look best for one device while others look shitty, and accept it.

whats the model# of yout TV? (does it have DVI?)

I know that the other sources won't look as good but SD already looks poor on my TV and I just want the HD to look as good as possible (especially Blu-ray).

I tried the 7669 method through the PS3 with one Blu-ray disc and nothing else. I just selected a scene after changing the settings and it was way off!

It is a 30" Wide Flat Digital TV.
Model # NS-30HTV
It does not have DVI.

Boy that sucks You buy a new TV, and expect everything to look better, and then this happens.

I'm running into the same deal. TV programs look fine, DVD's look VERY grainy compared to my last TV, VGA video from laptop looks phenomenal, Blu-rays look great. It's pretty stupid. You just can't do enough research before buying these things.

well, if I was in your situation...(do you have HD cable?)...I would run my cable via composite, if it already looks crappy it can't hurt. And run the PS3 solely to the TV component input.

dont know what else to say.

also, are you saying that when you use the SONY calibration, your blurays look off?

I have HD cable through Time Warner.
I think the problem is really my TV and its lousy settings.
By the way, I am using the ability to barely make out the right pluge chip as a basis on what looks right when using the calibration.

I have been waiting around for months for the Blu-ray version of the DVE calibrater that comes out in March and hope that will make things a little easier.

I guess I'll just have to wait until I get DVE calibrater to get this whole thing sorted out.

Also, have you tried a DVE disc before? What's it like?
I'm hoping its worth $20.00 instead of getting anything I can find on the internet for free.

Good, there were no instructions with the Sony calibrater, and I still didn't understand some of the things on it, even after reading that post mentioned earlier in the thread.

Great thread crackinhedz! You !

I agree, the DVD Essentials route is the way to go. They're easy to use and you'll see great results after.

Can't wait for the HD version!

Default Free calibration disc for BD

Here is a link for a DVE type disc on AVS. Read the thread a little and download the AVCHD disc. It is BD compatable. If you read the instructions a little, it will definetly help your situation. It is also free!!!

I used the original disc about 10 years ago and thought it was very helpful. Seeing as I'm just getting into Blu, I went ahead and pre-ordered this.

I know everyone says to use cinema/movie mode as it provides the most "accurate" settings, but I use standard. I just don't like how the movie mode dulls everything and makes it look reddish, even if that is more accurate, IMO. Just don't use vivid/dynamic because the settings are so "juiced", they can drain the life of your set. Plus, I think dynamic makes everything look bluish.

I use the movie settings for BD. Standard when i'm watching TV, game when playing PS3, and Dynamic (Fixed) when watching sports. I also use the user setting (set by paidgeeks instructions on how to setup colors on Sony discs) when watching tv programs.

Great thread!! I've learned more in the last couple of minutes reading than the last few months trying to learn this stuff through my own investigation!
