I sort by genre and then alphabetical....... I laminated some genre makers also.... I just recently did this and it much easier to find what i am looking for.

i have mine sorted like this:

older blus sorted alphabetically in a separate rack
new releases in order of release date on a small rack by the screen/equipment (once space is filled, new releases put to the front, and oldest release is gone to the alphabetized rack)
3d blus all on a separate featured rack, HOWEVER if the 3d blu is part of a series (harry potter, transformers, pirates, avengers etc) then the whole series stays with it. criterions are also sorted with this but i only have a few of them

also i have ps3 games all sorted by release date, this makes more sense for them because as time goes on developers know how to utilize the system much better and get power out of it.

I used to have it pretty like this, but since I moved it's all just a big mess I have managed to keep the 3Ds separate though!

Mine are semi-sorted.
3D is seperate from 2D. Any series is kept together. Slip-covers are kept together, and movies outside of those catagories is sorted by director, and failing that they're sorted by studio.

You can see pics of this in my gallery.

My favourite one is my 3D section. Most of the slips are WB. At the end of the WB line is "The Polar Express". This sits right next to another Zemickis film; "A Christmas Carol", published by Disney. After Disney I have Paramount starting with "Thor" and "Captain America", and when I get "The Avengers" (assuming it's good enough to buy, which we can safely bet on) it will bridge the gap between Disney and Paramount and keep the Marvel 3D series together as well.

Sad, geek question. That's a perfect question for these boards!

Wow that's a boat load of movies ! I have around 30 and was feeling guilty

Do you even watch them often enough to justify the expensive hobby ?

I don't alphabetize my collection but I do the following...
I keep my 3D Blu-rays together...with those in sleeves snuggly fitting next to each other....anaglyph 3D dvds are next, separated......HD DVDs (I still have around 50 of these) in a rack together and 2D blu-rays all together too. All my other DVDs are on various shelves and cases.

That's about the level of my sorting....

I try to keep all my blu's in genres, though the last 150 blu-rays I've bought aren't organized as well as they could be, as I just put most of them on my shelf without worring about sorting them properly. I don't keep my 3d blu's separate from my 2d blu's either, I don't see the point in that when I've got sequels, as I prefer to keep them together in sets.

Just wondering how you guys sort your 3D blu-rays, ie alphabetically in your normal blu-ray collection, or do you keep them separate?

Yeah, I know it's a sad-geek question but I don't care!!

Rich
I keep the 3D blu rays separate like I do with my DVDs and Blu rays. The way they are sorted are the same way my DVDs and Blu rays are sorted, TV Shows, then Movies with more then one movie in the franchise (I.E. Terminator, T2, T3). Then animated films then miscellaneous movies.

You'd hate my Harold and Kumar trilogy then, that you have to look in sections of three different formats to find!

I do that because I like spine to match up. Which is also what annoys me about the little slim cases they have in continental Europe.

I didn't have a blu-ray player or 1080p capable TV until I got my 3D setup. I own less than a dozen 2D blu-rays. I don't ever buy anything 2D anymore as I have Netfix to take care of any 2D needs. I keep the the 2D BDs on a separate shelf from the 3D BDs, in a narrow wooden case with a glass door next to my HD 3D theater set up. But when I need the extra shelf space for more 3D those 2D BDs will be moved to a different location.

My standard DVDs are on the other side of the room near to my other set up that is not 1080p capable. It's still pretty nice though, and I still like to watch stuff on it sometimes. 64" Mitsubishi projection TV.

All alphabetically for me. TV series are seperate from movies. 3D, 2D, DVD and VHS all together. If a box set doesnt fit, it gets put on the top of my dvd stand or at the end of the line.
I'll slowly get the VHS out of there. They take up too much room. I dont mind watching older movies on DVD so if I pick them up for $5 or under, that's a win for me!

Well, if you don't sort your blus, it would be kind of hard to figure out where your stuff is later when your collection starts to grow. Just hope you don't toss your blus into a bin like Walmart does... now that would be a sin in itself...

I hadnt really thought about it before for some reason as all my blu's were just in alphabetical order. But to be honest I kept forgetting what I had in 3D when browsing.
So thanks, I have now put all my 3D ones separately (still in alphabetical order)
...but all my Disneys are separate in a different shelf unit (and that includes the 3D numbered ones)

At least you know where stuff is now... that's always a good thing...

Now let me see, where did I put that....?

Glad I ain't the only one with OCD about this stuff!!!

Thanks for all the replies, I think I will just keep the 3Ds sorted separately from normal blu's. My collection isn't big enough to warrant a more 'thorough' sorting!

I sort my blu's alphabetically. I do movies first, then series, criterions, anime, disney, other animated, and lastly 3D's. I used to sort by genre but that is just one big pain in the ass. So many films are rather subjective for genre. When you reach a certain number of movies all sorting becomes tedious. My wife and I tend to buy quite a few movies at a time and nothing is more annoying than sorting like 20 blu's and realizing you left one in another room and have to move a crapload of discs I have a decent amount of blu's but our dvd collection is insane. I lost count after about 5000
