I was just wondering to all the DLP's owner's out there, what kind of T.V. do you have and how bad are the viewing angles?

I really like the size of DLP's but have always been afraid of the viewing angles....and feedback from any owners would be helpful.

Remember to tell me the type of T.V. you have as well.

i love my dlp. it only gets bad if you're really close, on the floor under the tv, or behind the couch at the very outside edge (dramatic viewing angle).

Mine is great. You really have to sit on the outside left or right (about 75 degrees or more) before you have an issue.

I have a 50" Samsung 5076 1080p, and the viewing angles were a bit rough. So we flipped our living room around and angled the tv, and voila, no viewing angle problems. Still a bit of a vertical angle issue that is noticeable when using the wii, but ok otherwise.

Luckily you can check out most tvs at bestbuy or wherever and spot the problems pretty easily for your desired model.

the kind i have in my sig, DLPs are great, my last tv before this was a DLP as well, viewing angles are not a a big a deal unless you plan on watching a movie with 15 people and even then, why the hell would you be sitting at the shitty seat wayyyyy to the far off left or right :P

I have the "46 Samsung. The left/right viewing angle isn't an issue at all, because I have the TV situated in the corner. Therefore, it's not possible to get more than 45 degrees off center. If you're putting it against a wall, then you may have some problems.

The bigger problem I've noticed are the vertical viewing angles. If I stand up and walk towards it, it does get dimmer and dimmer. When I'm standing 1 foot in front of it, I can barely see a picture at all. Of course, I'm 6'5", so the veritcal angle gets exaggerated a bit more for me. But... that's what I bought comfortable seating for. In a seated position, I haven't had any problems with brightness at all, and I'm very pleased with the picture quality.

So, as long as your seated position matches up OK with the level of the TV, the veritcal angle shouldn't bother you. I don't know too many who like to stand while watching their movies. Of course, the earlier post made a good point. I imagine there are some wii games that may require you to stand.

the angles aren't bad at all on my set. i'm 100% happy with that aspect. the way outside light affects the picture is more of an issue.


I think DLP's get a bad rap. Anyone that's ever been to my house has been amazed with the picture. But nobody has run out to buy a projection TV in the 1.5 years I've had it. These people bought flat, skinny screens that they place on a 20 inch deep stand. ha! go figure!

I have a Samsung HL-T6189S and love it. It's right in front of the couch, so I don't watch it from the sides, but I hear the viewing angles on this newer DLP are much better than past models. I haven't had any issues though. Best money I ever spent.

Mitsu WD-73733 73" 1080p...

I replaced a 60" Sony Grand Wega LCD projection, it was an older style with only a 768 native resolution LCD panal, even though it took a 1080i signal

No problems with viewing angles, it just seems a bit "soft" Don't get me wrong, I expected a 73 to be not as sharp as a 60, however, I expected some of this to be compensated for by the increased number of pixels...

Turns out something to beware of with DLP is a process they use to get more pixels out of their existing chips, something called "wobulation" Give it a read on wikipedia. IMHO, you would be better off finding a DLP set that uses 1080 native, not wobulated. Sure wobulation gets rid of the SDE, but the price is a bit of softness.

I own a Samsung HL-R5668W (which is a 56" model-lamp based)

You would pretty much have to sit perpendicular at close proximity to get a "BAD" view. That would hold true of all technologies. I bought this set a few years back and chose this one because the model line passed all video processing tests and the price was easier to afford a large picture.

Even a couple years ago prices of LCD and Plasma were up there for the screen size.That is why I went with DLP technology. Today however my first choice would be a Pioneer plasma. Still a good bit of money but not what it used to be. Every time I go out and see the pioneer. I want to take it home with me. Price "to me" should be the only obstacle to a decision as you can get a huge picture for not a lot of money with DLP. DLP can be a good choice.

Do some homework or you might have buyers remorse.

I've got the Mitsu WD-57732 1080p and it's been great! You'll only really have issues when you're a foot or so away from the screen or off to the side. But who watches TV that way anyway?

Mitsubishi WD-Y65 owner, the viewing angle is actually very good on pretty much any recent DLP from what I've seen. You have to be way out to the sides to see any issues with PQ, aside from normal glare off the screen you'd see on any TV screen. Doesn't seem any different from any other modern HDTV, really.

I have a 50 inch Samsung 1080P. Viewing angles aren't a problem. The one thing I have issues with is rainbowing. I have heard the new LED lamp based TVs have taken care of this problem or aren't as bad. Apparently not everyone can see it either. I have asked several people who have watched movies with me and they don't notice a thing.

have 67" samsung 6767w DLP, watch it up to 45 degrees all the time (the max angle of my couch sitting area) and it looks GREAT! no problems here!

There is no angle problem on my 73" dlp mitsubishi.....you can view it almost parallel to it and you'll still be able to view it....

I also have a Samsung 50" DLP, with a bulb not LED and the viewing angles are pretty bad I would say. I tend to make it a point to sit directly in front of the tv...

I love my DLP. This is my second 61 Samsung. First one was pre-HDMI and pre-1080p. The new one is the LCD DLP so no moving parts and nothing to replace. If you have the space in your room, in my opinion, DLP is the way to go.

We sit about 9 feet away and have a curve 6 seat couch around it. No problems at all.

I have a Samsung 1080p DLP and it looks amazing. Viewing angles are good, not great. Vertical angle is a bigger issue than side angles. Since you will be sitting 99% of the time in front of your TV than the image and clarity of a DLP is near perfect. Blu-ray movies and video games look fantastic on my DLP. Plus, no burn in issues for my games. If you don't plan to mount a TV to a wall than you have no reason not to own a DLP.
