Default New DLP's: do they require bulb replacement?

Hello,

This is a pretty noob question I suppose, but I couldn't find any information using the search button. The only things I saw were related to projectors, not DLP projection tv's. I was just wondering if the new DLP's, particuarly the slim Samsung's, required the bulb to be replaced every couple years or so like I have heard about. I also hear the term "LED DLP" thrown around but have no clue how that differs from a regular DLP. Any clarification on these two topics would be much appreciated, thank you.

Can't answer your first question since I'd need specific model numbers. Of course if I have that, that means you have that and you might as well do your own research.

Unlike LCD chips, a single-chip DLP projector/RPTVs does not have any color on it. It's just a piece of chip with thousands of mirrors. To reproduce color, it needs a light source that have already been "colored" so to speak. In the regular bulb projection DLP, the colored lights come from color wheel which spins in tandem with the micromirrors. With LED DLPs, the color wheel is gone and instead the LED itself provides the colored light source.

There are also LED LCD HDTVs and they look very pretty.

LED DLP does not require bulb replacement. The bulbs are rated for a minimum of 8 years of 8 hours a day viewing

check this link out if you would and let me know if it's a regular dlp or led dlp. i honestly can't find anything on the page that would tell me, but it looks like one of the newer ones. anyways let me know.

thanks!

thanks for the response. looks like circuit city carries the 50" version of this for 1599.99 and the 56" version for 1799.99. pretty good deal it seems. I just don't know DLP compares to lcd and plasma. guess I need to do some hands-on research at the store.

thanks for the help wickywoo.

Default Circuit City Extended Warranty/ Mits lamp replacement

Wondering if anyone has had a lamp replaced on a Mitsubishi DLP under the Circuit City Extended Warranty?

My picture is about 2/3 darker than it was a few days ago. They wont send me the lamp because the freaking light isn't blinking.

I hope they don't use that as an excuse to deny me a replacement. I have to bump all the settings to max to be able to watch it and it is still too dark. Shouldn't have to wait until it fails when the picture is this bad.

That is what they tell me. I found this thread, not very reassuring. I will post an update after they make their service call on sunday. The circuit city guy said it is the only day he works! He couldn't believe it either.

Sorry, misread your post. The same light that goes on when you power up your TV is supposed to blink when the bulb goes out I believe.

Well.. circuit city was supposed to show up yesterday to check out my TV (they only come by on sundays!) but never did. Some genius didn't change my home phone number in their system like he said he did which I found out when I called back. I then had to spend another hour going through the process all over again, I then asked them to expedite the lamp for their incompetence right down the line but they said they would charge me $25.00 to do it. I told them that I shouldn't have to pay a dime after they made me wait for a week for nothing and on a sunday.

They said they couldn't which explains why their corporation is going down the crapper. I called the circuit city where I bought it and it took ten minutes of calling just to get an answer then I was hung up on then I had to go through the entire process again. Corporations that can't empower their employees to resolve lousy servicce usually end up where circuit city is right now, low employee morale,
lousy sales, and customer dissatisfaction. That was the first and last time I buy anything other than a BD from Circuit City.
