Default How to get ps3 games in Dolby Digital instead of PCM?

Guys I know I'm just being an idiot but for some reason I cannot figure out how to get my games playing dolby digital instead of PCM. I had NCAA Football in and it showed on the receiver as PCM so I tried switching some stuff on the ps3 and going through the receiver settings as well but couldn't ever get it to say dolby digital 5.1? I know I read the other day I guy post that switching to dolby digital instead of pcm made the games sound way better so I was wanting to do it.

Turn off pcm 5.1 and 7.1 options then the receiver decodes the codec.

This doesn't make much sense, but please report back on your opinion.

Another way is in the game itself. In the options menu, if you can change the sound settings to something like "Headphones" the AVR displays 'Dolby Digital'. Besides in my place, I've tried it at a couple of friends houses each with their own set-ups and they all sounded more louder in DD than the AVR saying PCM.

Grammar police!

Seriously, loudness doesn't mean high fidelity.

My receiver has always said PCM connected via HDMI. I never bothered trying to change it, it sounds good to me. I could try to uncheck the PCM 5.1 and 7.1 and see if theres a real difference, but Im guessing the multichannel PCM is superior???

I posted about this here

some people just don't wanna believe me, turning off PCM does make the games sound better. I had always wondered why my 360 sounded so good compared to the PS3.

It is louder and CLEARER! Better sound separation.....

Ah man, thanks for catching that.... Some people like to hear their audio in what seems to be hi-fidelity when rather its just a sound illusion.

Hmm, well, when I turn off PCM, yeah, the Dolby Digital track is louder but the quality is not better than PCM though.

Somewhat unrelated I had this same argument with audiophiles at Best Buy regarding speakers... Doing comparison between likes and dislikes between Klipsch and Definitive Technology... Ultimately the Klipsch have great booming presence and would certainly shake the crap out of my house, but the Def Tech's seemed more pure to the source audio and clearer. While it didn't seem as loud, you could tell it was just the same by trying to talk to the guy next to you - a fantastic demonstration. Some say they're just too bright, but I think they're just more accurate than the thumping speakers everyone else likes. If you need more thump, add more subwoofers.

The same idea presents itself from PCM to the lossy codecs. Just because it's louder doesn't mean you're getting as much detail as you would from the PCM track. I think it's pretty obvious that PCM is going to be superior to the dolby digital track, but you're just used to the louder booming tracks. If it's loud you want, get a more powerful amp and speakers, but calling PCM not as clear as a lossy codec is a great fallacy, I think.

Bottom line, however, is you know what you like, and as long as you're happy with your setup, good for you!
