Just went thru this set and Angels and Demons, just an FYI...while these 2 UHD releases don't contain the extended cuts that were previously available, the scenes from the each of the two cuts ARE included in the special features section, which is totally awesome.

I hope I did good: the grain structure on the new disc is much better. And the image is much sharper
I think new BD use edge enhancement

Look at this caps-a-holic comparison

New BD looks sharper to you yes? So now look at this
https://s11.postimg.org/89x3b7z75/asfd.jpg
This is previous BD with some very basic "irfanview" sharpening, and even so it looks VERY CLOSE to how Mi4K release looks now (at least on that particular cap).

Not happy that the extended version is not included but I'll probably get it anyway. Up to now every 4K BD that I have was taken from a 2K digital intermediate. I'm looking forward to seeing what a real 4K source looks like on my 65 inch/class Sony.

I watched it the other night and it does look really nice. A little soft at times, but it was a very filmlike appearance with a hint of grain.

No way it's edge enhancement. Sony has never used EE ever and the amount of the detail of the new scan (because I am fairly sure it's a new scan) is amazing. We always knew the 2009 Blu-ray was very soft, too soft. The remaster keep way more detail from the 35mm source, no doubt about that

You can't get a result like this with a horrible filter like EE:

https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?a=1&x...&l=0&i=10&go=1

Sony is the best in the business: all their 4K remasters have been spot on. This is no exception.

11# comparison cap is a little bit out of focus even on "remasterd BD".

It's much easier to see EE on 9# and 13# comparison caps, because with scenery in the distance high contrast edges are evident. My comparison from previous post clearly shows that detail wise previous BD + EE looks very similar (if not the same) after EE.

Watched this and Angels and Demons today and both have great PQ and AQ. The ATMOS isn't in your face but does it's job when needed.

With your sharpened picture you basically proofed the opposite of what you were claiming: Your sharpened picture does indeed exhibit edge enhancement while the new blu-ray does not.

Any chance they'll re-release this so it'd have seamless branching with the longer cut? Otherwise I'm keeping the BD release I have. Or I'll just buy it since the BD has the theatrical version.
Why not seamless branching though?

I bought the box set of the three Langdon movies. Watched the Da Vinci Code, and i have to say i was pretty disappointed. Dark scenes looked smeary and poorly defined. Grain seemed very heavy to me. Generally soft, and not what i was hoping from a remastered UHD release. Some of the outdoor stuff did look very good though, but i felt it was all a bit hit and miss overall. Perhaps i was expecting too much. I was watching on a Samsung 65" JU7500. I'm shortly going to be upgrading to an LG OLED screen, as i've had enough of LCD.
I've been generally underwhelmed with 4K UHD so far. Perhaps its my screen, which is one of the reasons i'm upgrading to get the latest HDR support. Heres hoping!

This movie always looked dull and gritty and no amount of remastering will fix that. Angels&Demons has the same issues while Inferno looks good for most part.

Like the above poster mentioned, this movie inherently has a bit of a soft and dull appearance. Still, the UHD is miles better than the bluray.

As for being disappointed with UHD so far, try some of the newer releases, like Sicario, John Wick 2, Pacific Rim, The Dark Tower, Star Trek Into Darkness, Zero Dark Thirty, The Revenant. Those are just a handful but all look stunning and with an OLED should convert you into a believer

An older movie (even ones from 15 years ago) in most cases will not look as sharp as a modern shot film. But a good UHD remaster can make an older movie look the best it ever has.

The UHD looks great, miles above the Blu-ray. And it's the superior theatrical cut.
Top 15 | Aliens | Amadeus | Annie Hall | Casablanca | Casino Royale | Die Hard | Fargo | The Godfather, Part II | Goodfellas | The Lord of the Rings | Raiders of the Lost Ark | The Silence of the Lambs | Star Wars | Unforgiven | Zodiac | 2018 Movie Ratings | Top 30 of the 2010s (so far)

OLED screen installed last night. 65" LG C7.
My god, the difference is like night and day! So glad i didn't scrimp and go QLED. Image quality is stunning.
Da Vinci does indeed look much better, but i guess its just not a very pretty film, as the grain is very obvious, and it still looks overly soft in places.
After much testing, calibrating, and swapping of discs, its definitely the film, and not my equipment
I couldn't recommend this disc to anybody except hardcore fans..
