This is a good article on 10 big reasons why not to upgrade to Windows 11. The biggest reason why people do not upgrade to Windows 11 and stay with Windows 10, is because most people have to buy a new PC in order to upgrade since Windows 11 requires TPM 2.0 with secure boot and the latest CPU’s.

Looks like the fourth quarter of 2025, a lot of people will be buying and building new computers so that they can run Windows 11. It sounds like Windows 10 security updates will stop on or around October 14th 2025 (or Jan 2026 at the latest).

I guess that's an issue for some. However, I don't see that as anything close to all the other reasons Win 11 is awful.
I hate the requirement for additional, unwanted tracking and user account logging that you can't opt out of. We're falling even farther into impossible-to-avoid user data collection processes. I think it's gotten to the point where it should be illegal. Also, requiring online access for almost all software and options is bullshicannery.
Requiring a Microsoft account (which will most likely become required within a couple years - for now, they restrict some options without logging in your account), and not allowing offline, untracked use for a paid OS is a travesty.
Nevermind the scores of other issues I have. But Microsoft has now solidified their lack of concern for consumer data preservation, and we are now PURCHASING a required OS while also having no choice on opting OUT of becoming a data collection victim to increase their for-profit analytics; forced advertising and promotionals; and endless usage data that will be used for nefarious purposes - all while we pay money for the OS. How pathetic.

Oddly, I'm in complete agreement as I await delivery of the second Win11 device for my family. I'm my family's IT shop, and either I've been very bad in terms of hardware lifecycle management by not having a single Win11-capable device on-hand in 2021, or I've been very good in terms of choosing hardware that lasts a very long time. I prefer to think the latter

But in spite of all my misgivings about the OS, I'm still aiming to be on track to replace every Windows device in my household by 2025 with a Win11 device. I don't think it's a complete waste -- the hardware was truly getting a bit long in the tooth, and I'd probably be replacing it all either way, just on a more relaxed schedule. Lack of security updates is actually a pretty big deal, and although I think we may actually be able to squeeze a Win10 support extension out of MS, the end is still coming, and I can kinda see why some of the new requirements almost make sense.

I do plan to use whatever tricks I can to keep using a local account (at least for now, it's not hard at all). At the very least, if they close off other avenues, it appears you can set your machine up with one cloud account, and then create another local account to actually use. I plan to turn off all the telemetry and ads that I can, and so on. Should I have to fight the OS like this? No, absolutely not. But this is ultimately less pain than a platform switch (I love Linux and also have Linux boxes that I'll happily not upgrade, but there are software needs Wine can't solve, and I friggen hate the MacOS GUI, though I love BSD and Mac hardware)

I am hoping that by late 2025 or early 2026 that Microsoft comes out with Windows 12. Then I would upgrade to Windows 12 instead of Windows 11 (still need to build all new PC’s for the upgrade).

But who knows Windows 12 might not come out until around 2028+.

Microsoft should make "Windows 7 Remastered" or "Windows XP Remastered." Where it doesn't have all the background services running and it feels lighter like those OSes did.

Enterprise edition is very similar to the standard editions while Enterprise LTSC feels like 7 with a 10 skin. I'll be using it until 2029 and then who knows, maybe a Linux distro or Windows 12 (hopefully without the junk from 11) rolls out by then.

With all the #%@!ing about climate change and carbon footprints..... what's the carbon footprint of the entire world buying new computers so they can use Windows 11?

How much energy to recycle pcs, laptops, etc. and how much space in landfills taken up?

Do we have enough chips yet for this overhaul......?

Carbon footprint isnt bad, if you E recycle your PC parts old get renewed in new manufacturing, most boards etc can be recycled easy enough

I've been using WIndows 11 since last Nov and it's been ok so far except I have to find out what is eating all my ram. I have an older 2018 HP laptop which I replaced the HDD with a solid state one recently and its much improved but with only 8gb of ram windows is using 50-80% at all times. I never had this issue with windows 10. I might buy another 8gb stick for a total of 16gb or just do a fresh install of windows 10 again

8gb of ram is the bare minimum amount you should be using running windows 10, so yeah it's not the o/s, it's the fact you are running on the standard minimum amount of ram from 10 years ago! Windows 10 should have 16gb of memory, windows 11 imo should have 32gb with 16gb being the bare minimum.

That's basically what I thought, of course I went to Best buy and they had absolutely zero ram for laptops and the guy says to me that "they" aren't sending any laptop ram to the store as laptops/notebooks aren't that popular anymore and most people are going with desktop pc's now or just tablets. I'm not sure I believe that but none the less I'm not planning on buying a new computer as 98% of the time I just use my phone so I'll check Amazon and see what they have for ram

In the year 2015 (7 years ago), I was using 128GB of DDR4 memory for Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit edition, then I went to Windows 10 Professional 64 bit and used the same PC. If I every build a new PC for Windows 11 (or maybe Windows 12), I would do a minimum of 256GB of DDR4 or DDR5 ram.

While desktops are more powerful and cheaper when compared to Notebook computers. There is a chip shortage going on and that might be one of the reasons why you are having trouble finding ram.

For a desktop PC I like some of the new high performance DDR5 memory that is being released on the market.

ref your baseline memory DDR4/ DDR5 is as much as a bottom end SSD

A top idea, earlier in the year I had to trash a pile of 100% working PC parts that included a perfectly good working PC, simply because too many lazy scroungers wanted me to give the PC and other parts away, rather than them getting a job. On another occasion my Panasonic TV of 2 years was very very close to being trashed even though it had three years waranty of five left. Same reason
