NEWS
https://www.blu-ray.com/news/?id=15154

Quote:
French label Gaumont will release on Blu-ray acclaimed Polish director Andrzej Zulawski's (Possession) Boris Godounov (1989), starring Ruggero Raimondi, Kenneth Riegel, Pavel Slabý, and Galina Vishnevskaya. The release will be available for purchase on November 19th.

Synopsis: Andrzej Zulawski directs this acclaimed film adaptation of Modeste Mussorgsky's opera chronicling the tragic demise of the 16th-century Russian Tsar.

Special Features:

Boris Godounov, the tormented conscience - New documentary produced by Dominique Maillet, and featuring interviews with Delphine Forest, Ruggero Raimondi and Andrzej Zulawski
Original trailer

Also on November 19th the French label will release on Blu-ray Italian director Luigi Comencini's (Bread, Love and Dreams) La Boheme (1988), starring Barbara Hendricks, José Carreras, Luca Canonici, Massimo Girotti, and Angela Maria Blasi.

Director Luigi Comencini resists all efforts to make his filmization of the classic Puccini opera La Boheme self-consciously cinematic. As a result, his version of the opera may find itself out of favor with some film fans, but much treasured by Puccini purists. The principal roles of the tragic Mimi and headstrong aspiring artist Rodolfo are sung by Barbara Hendricks and Luca Canonici. Hendricks seems a tad too healthy for the frail Mimi, but this is a common shortcoming with singers who play this part: if one is too sickly, one can't attain those crystal-clear high notes. James Conlon conducts the National Orchestra of France on the La Boheme soundtrack. As in most other adaptations of this piece, the 1989 La Boheme draws its inspiration as much from the Henri Muger novel {-Scenes of Bohemian Life} as it does from the Puccini opera. (Synopsis courtesy of Hal Robinson).

Special Features:

La bohème, Puccini au temps de l'insouciance/Time of Recklessness - New documentary produced by Pierre-Henri Gibert, and featuring interviews with Isabelle Partiot-Piéri, Christian Gasc, Robert Penavayre et Ruggero Raimondi

The November 5th batch is a problem - lots of titles I would purchase, all are listed as Region Free on Amazon.fr, but they also list that NONE of them have English subs; hopefully, this will prove to be an error.

Thanks for the review of GIFLE - happy to read it has English subs, ordered right after reading your thoughts on the film. Perhaps we will luck out and some (at least) of the November releases will have them as well.

You are welcome, Django.

I am not completely satisfied with the color grading as it is a bit too warm, but generally speaking the presentation is fine. You will like it, and this Adjani film hasn't had a U.S./UK DVD release.

We will have three more reviews for Gaumont titles up shortly

Next will be French Garden.

November titles: I will check them all and will let you know after the release date.

Damn I missed it. The thing is I picked up three titles last year La Soeurs Bronte, Danton & Sous Le Soleil de Satan during November.

Cool! 3 of the 5 are listed as having English subtitles on Amazon.fr. It would be a shame if all 5 don't have them as it would be nice to have the complete set.

Yes, these would be great to have - once again the listing shows Region B only.

On October 19th, Pro-Bassoonist mentioned there would be reviews of FRENCH GARDEN as well as a couple of other Gaumont titles posted pretty soon - is that still the case?

Thanks very much, there is so little information about English subs and Region Codes for these releases - your reviews in English are about all there is that proves to be correct, particularly since amazon.fr listings are not 100%.

I understand, Django, no problem. I will post more reviews for Gaumont/Pathe releases

This week I will do my best to have these three covered on the site. They are all English-friendly.

Way to go pro-b!
"Cuisine et dépendances" is one of the best from the first batch of releases, along with "Eaux profondes"!

Hothead Blu-ray REVIEW

Criterion should also step up and at least release the Techine and Sautet films with Patrick Dewaere. Canal have a very good master for Hotel America, for instance, and The Bad Son also has a recent master. (The French DVD is even English-friendly).

This is the U.S. Techine box set with Hotel America. Definitely worth picking up
