Question Why Rightstuf?

From what i been told, people get their anime from rightstuf mainly because its cheaper?

I been buying my anime from amazon mainly see how they offer a better price and free shipping on items over $25 compare to Rightstuf which is $49 i think.

So really whats the big hype around rightstuf anyways?

It is a lot cheaper if you have Got Anime membership and if it stacks with the sales they have.

I got High School DxD New for $37 something because of the Funi sale they had and it stacked with the Got Anime.
Plus you get stuff very early sometimes. Most of us got the Nov 4th and 11th releases almost two week before their release date.

I don't mind Amazon but their prices aren't that good usually slightly below MSRP. And at least RS actually care about Anime. Amazon just wants money.

They upped free shipping, it hasn't been $25 for several months now. It's now $35 to get free shipping.

Also for some of us like Neoz and myself Amazon now charges us sale tax. We're as Rightstuf does not. That plays a big factor when on a budget and you have to count every penny when tax is $3 - $5. Sure with a new Amazon hub in Orlando (about 2 hrs away) shipping is like 1 -2 days now but they ship on release day. I can get stuff from Rightstuf as early as 2 weeks. I've even heard people say 1 month early on this forum. That's a bonus in my book.

Along with what's already been mentioned, Rightstuf's packaging and customer service is far superior to Amazon and most other retailers in general.

Ok it's story time:

Amazon has a tendency to either get anime later than other sites that specialize in it, or never get it. Due to the fact they never got the Blu-ray of Trust & Betrayal, and 3rd party sellers were charging double, I had to go without for years. Finally opening up an Amazon Japan account and importing it, but now I have to live with it being a different cover design from the other two. Amazon caused this:

I first discovered RightStuf after I searched for another site that sold the Rurouni Kenshin manga, after Amazon screwed me on it. And by that time, they only had the other two movies in stock. T&B was long sold out. If I had known about RS sooner, I could have all three look the same.

Now about the manga, and how Amazon screwed me. i had all the volumes except for two that I couldn't find elsewhere, so I ordered them off Amazon. At first they had them listed as being in stock, then after about a week I got an email that they didn't have anymore but they were expecting more in 2 months. So after waiting 2 months, they got more stock but decided they didn't charge enough initially, and cancelled my order. Then sent me an email that they cancelled my order and I was able to reorder if i want. By this point, the price of both books went up by $30 each, from the initial price. That's when I did a Google search and found RightStuf.

I haven't bought any anime or manga from Amazon since. I just use them for other, non-anime, Blu-ray titles.

Let's see, I just pre-ordered these two from TRSI:

A) Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Border 4 (Ghost Stands Alone)
B) Cowboy Bebop, Complete series

So for a price comparison here goes:

TRSI:
A) $44.99
B) $35.99
Total: $80.98 (free shipping)

Amazon price:
A)$59.99
B)$49.99
Total: $109.98 (free shipping) + TAX = $116.85

$35.87 difference... 'nuff said.

Why is Amazon being presented as the only alternative?

Things are obviously much different for me, as I am overseas, but DVD Pacific is always cheaper. Sometimes, there are sales on Amazon and TRSI, but otherwise, regular releases are always cheaper at Pacific. TRSI is for Aniplex and NISA

Well the original poster mentioned Amazon, so that's one reason we're comparing Amazon to RightStuf.

I realise that, but surely we all know of other places to buy anime.

Ok so I did a little test of it on my own. This is why I still dont understand the whole hype around RightStuf.

I picked a bit older anime. In this case something off my wishlist.

No im not a prime member on amazon and I simply recently created a rightstuf account just for a comparison I didnt factor in the 10% thing of rightstuf

Edited: 10% of $134.96 = $13.50 so $134.96 - $13.50 = $121.46 if i did that right

Well those are old releases... do comparisons with upcoming titles yet to be released. Plus, as had been mentioned before, for new releases when ordering from Rightstuff you can get the release as early as a month before the official release date... most often week or two before. Amazon will not ship out that early before release date. If I'm going with older releases that have been around a while then usually it's Amazon or Ebay for a used copy... or RightStuff whenever they have sales.

Also, there a quite a few sites to get Japanese, Hong Kong, or Korean releases we can't get here in the US:

http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/

http://www.yesasia.com/us/en/home.html

http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-14-71-13z-49-en.html

http://www.amazon.co.jp/In-English/b...8&node=1094656

Of course these are going to be EXPENSIVE...and most will not have English subtitles, but sometimes there is just no other way (Ergo Proxy for example [though the price freakin' skyrocketed a few months back from going OOP!]...no US Blu-ray release and I haven't heard of any plans for one yet either...)

P.S. There are also UK and Australian releases that we don't get here in the US or that have pretty unique and interesting packaging...so it helps to have a Blu-ray player that can play all regions if you find a title that catches your fancy. Sometimes they are cheaper than the US releases too...

Again the thing with RS is to wait till there is a sale. Or to order them when they first announce the preorders.
Amazon is good once in awhile but for the most part their prices are higher then all the rest.

I could pull up my all my archived orders and I'm sure I saved enough to justify buying form them then Amazon. Again I buy from all places Amazon, BB, Frys, and used. But for new stuff RS so far has been the cheapest.

The thing is that Rightstuf isn't always the cheapest on some items. How we all make it work is by pre-ordering new releases (when the listing first comes up is when you get the best price*) and using the got anime discount. Every few months or so they have studio discounts and that is where the true savings come in because you stack the savings of a 25% - 30% studio saving with 10% got anime one. It really does make it worth while. I didn't use Rightstuf when I first started buying my collection (older titles) because you can find better deals in different places (ebay, Amazon, and other places**) you just have to look around and watch for coupons and sales (always watch this thread - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread.php?t=237985 ).

Good Luck with building you collection.

Edit: Vracer and Neoz beat me to the punch but I will leave my post just to reiterate the point.

* Check the forums alot. Members are always posting about the new pre-order listings.

I always cross check on older titles, compare prices. I can usually find older titles cheaper on Amazon because they just want to clear stock. Same reason you'll often find non-anime BD titles on Amazon for as cheap as $5.

RightStuf is usually cheaper on pre-orders, as others have mentioned. Because they are NEW titles, Amazon feels they will sell well and tries to get as much money as possible for them. If you wait about 3-4 years, the titles might be cheaper on Amzon, but then you're waiting.

Yeah but you risk it selling out fast and going OOP! Some titles are just in high demand.

I will add to this as well. Some titles to do OOP. I mean look at Baka nd Test LE's.

Again, it is all just personal preference really. Some of us are on very tight budgets as we have to make every penny count.

Exactly, as I mentioned with my other post (that has the pictures), that's why I stopped using Amazon for new titles.

Amazon just doesn't care about that portion of the market. If it's anime, Amazon simply doesn't give a crap. It's that attitude that caused me to stop using them for anime and manga.
