Default Vudu downgrading quality??

Over the last several weeks I have been noticing issues with Vudu's quality. It began while watching Game of Thrones. I began checking other HDX titles, many of them older titles. The Peacemaker, Home Alone, A league of their own, The Terminal, Meet the parents. I then compared the quality to Fandangonow and the quality is drastically better on Fandango. I called Vudu, and they tested the Peacemaker, and admitted that the quality was the same in sd as hdx. I advised them that is happening on multiple titles and not just one. I advised that other apps the quality is actually bluray quality and Vudu's appears to be being downgraded. I wish I could provide screenshots, but for example, go to the scene in home alone where Kevin is coming his hair in the mirror, and then where he is walking home from the grocery. The quality is abysmal. At this point I doubt they are doing anything until more people complain. They told me to provide all examples of the issues I am seeing. They are trying to blame on the studios. Can anyone else confirm issues? All uhd films appear to be just fine by the way.

I've had issues with VUDU over the years for this reason, nothing as of recent. I read the Vudu forums regularly and they said they got the new Batman masters. I went on to watch Batman Forever and it looked horrendous in HDX.

I chalked it up to my internet signal and just stopped watching. Went back last night and it looked completely different. I'm wondering if VUDU is deploying new masters for films behind the scenes and they aren't ready to be streamed or whatnot.

I'll check it out tonight. Vudu's video quality is sub-par to iTunes and Movies Anywhere to begin with. Movies Anywhere is my preferred streaming provider because of the video quality. I have a 1 GB fiber connection.

Interesting. I've never tried Movies Anywhere before. I definitely notice iTunes being far superior to Vudu though.

As soon as the studios get it together, and everything is movies anywhere I will be done with Vudu. To me, it seems it is purposefully being done. Right now Fandangonow is far superior to Vudu. These are movies that I have never had issue with before. I checked hdx on Sully and it looks like crap. I have watched it before and it looked near 4k quality.

Add Big Lebowski, Tin Cup, Open Range and Patriot Games. This has to be a Samsung 4k app issue. I am finding way too many for a simple fluke.

That Vudu calls some of its prints HDX is ridiculous. Have you seen "Father Goose"? It's windowboxed(!), like some nonanamorphic DVD from the '90s, and SD. FandangoNow, on the other hand, has a decent print.

Same here. Of course, if it's not MA, then you're stuck. Right now, if it's non-MA, I opt for Amazon Prime Video when they match a sale at iTunes or Vudu. However, once iTunes provides a streaming app for Roku, I'll switch to that.

I have been testing all hdx titles on my Samsung 4k televisions, and can confirm that it appears all appear affected. I have compared hdx on my non 4k Samsung and everything appears normal. If anyone has a 4k Samsung tv can you test your hdx titles to see if hdx and sd are the same, please. I called Vudu and it was escalated. I was on the phone with them for over an hour. It sounds like a Samsung app issue, but of course they initially wanted to blame internet speeds, even though 4k titles haven't been affected. They don't sound too concerned unless there is a widespread issue. Is it possible that I am just the first to notice it? I am tempted to contact Samsung to notify them, but I figure I will have better luck if the issue is on vudus end.

I thought Amazon's streaming quality is better than iTunes though?

Not in my experience. I haven't tried Movies Anywhere streaming yet, but iTunes is far better than Vudu or Amazon.

I have been having issues with VUDU’s quality and have 2 Apple 4K’s. My internet is perfect and ITunes and MA 4K movies look great.

I remember back in 2014 when Godzilla was released in digital they briefly used a master of the movie that was super brightened up like it was recorded on a VHS tape, it looked absolutely awful (especially considering they originally had a different master of the film when it first came out). It was so bright that the bars on the top and bottom were nearly light grey. They went back to the original master shortly after.

I mean, I know Godzilla was a murky film, but I could make out what was going on.

This can have to do with more than just your connection. HDX tech is still overall market leading for 1080P streams if you are getting the full feed, which is dependent on more than just internet bandwidth.

Packetloss, Jitter, Latency are QoS measures that actually matter and on top of this there are other considerations such as the streaming device itself and the TV setup.

That being said, all of these technologies are terrible and physical media is king of quality and consistancy.

I just checked vudu on my TCL tv and see differences between sd, hdx and uhd.
Possible the VUDU app on your device has a bug with a recent update. I've seen issues where the app on 1 device is mucked up vs the app on all devices.

"Hondo" one of my favorite John Wayne movies is the same way....and they "claim" its HDX? I have the BD, its widescreen and looks awesome. The digital looks like a syndication copy.

The same on iTunes, is nearly identical to the BD.

Some of the streams on Vudu are pretty bad anyway, regardless of it being an app issue. Look at some of the WB titles in HDX, like Argo. It looks SD. Ive also had playback issues over the years. Sometimes a message comes up and just says the movie cant be played, when my internet is at full strength. Im using xbox one app which I know isnt the best for playback but still

I wish MA would just get the rights to the other studios so we can be happy. I too want to transfer to MA but I have too many TV shows in VUDU. Its doubtful the TV shows will ever be MA. This is why physical media is still king, but I know thats its not everyone's preference.
