Yep and yet another Universal title. Universal Australia have now decided it’s the DVD only route for anything that doesn’t make a lot of money during its cinema release.

The US Blu Ray for Tar is region free + you get a DVD copy as well (probably locked to region 1).

Or there's a BD copy with the 4K which is region-free by default, and then the Digital code can be easily sold to one of those strange people who actually want to spend money on cloud data access.

I guess I should count my lucky stars that The Fabelmans is getting a 1080pBD release, which I won’t buy, since I will import the 4K. Things are truly fu€ked up in this country. Went to buy Strange World on 4K and the clerk said “Did you watch it on DizNee Pus?” I wanted to say “No, blind buy. I just like to watch films in the best quality PQ/AQ available”, but instead, I told a half-truth to make some light banter “Collecting these for my daughter”. And it sucks even harder when a lot of streaming content doesn’t get a physical release (at least Amazon, Hulu, Paramount, HBO Max and the Peacock aren’t as obtuse as Disney and Netflix). Whatever happened to Stranger Things S3 on BD/4K or even The Clone Wars final season getting a BD release. Either way, this headline from late last year quietly makes me have some hope that BD/4K releases will continue to flourish, in the US at least. Also regarding streaming content on BD, I'd love to some Netflix/Disney+ content come to physical (even DVD would be cool, just for the novelty). Glass Onion, The Mandolorian, GDT's Pinocchio, and Bardo (I can see Criterion possibly doing the last two) are a few of the titles on my wishlist. EDIT: Speaking of streaming content on BD/4K ![]() Last edited by Levi0ffline; 02-04-2023 at 02:37 AM. |

Another shocker here (DVD only in Australia), available in 11 other countries on BD. ![]() I think it might have been mentioned earlier in this thread that Tar might be DVD only here. However, I think Universal just might change it’s mind, considering it had a better opening in theatrical opening in Australia then the US. So far, the box office total is tracking at just shy of $1,000,000. If Universal goes by their own logic of whatever does well at the Aussie box office gets a Blu-Ray, we might even get a UHD. At least it will save me importing the title. The list of Aussie Blu-Ray releases is sad, to say the least, this February. Apart from BP2: Wakanda Forever and Strange World UHD (the only 2 UHD titles released in Feb) and She Said on 1080pBD, there is nothing else I am interested in. The only prevalent releases are anime, schlock horror or old ‘80 flicks. March doesn’t fair much better. With the exception of the release of Banshees of Insherin and maybe one or two others (Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, biopic “I Wanna Dance with Somebody”). And the only 4K release, a Rocky box set. Lyle, Lyle Crocodile IS out on Blu, but would rather import the 2160pBD, if I’m buying. Essentially, Australia’s Blu-Ray market is now truly f*cked. While the US keeps adding tens of UHD titles monthly (both new and catalogue titles), and also TV on Blu-Ray continues to get some classics released (e.g. Cheers). What the f*ck happened in Australia. Bunch of technical savages in this country. |

Thought I’d resurrect this thread, in lieu of Easter and since I went to JB HiFi today, saw the Mayor of Kingstown DVD in the checkout line (impulse buy) section. Checked for an Aussie Blu-Ray and was disappointed that we are DVD only, although the UK and US did).
![]() ![]() And while I’m here, this title (Confess, Fletch): ![]() Is on Apple TV in Australia… Looks like I’m importing, again. Maybe I got to change my mantra around my expectations of Blu-Ray releases in Australia and… ![]() |

Just got an email from JB HiFi telling me that Gangs of London Season 2 is available for purchase, but it’s DVD only! Which pisses me off, after Umbrella released the first season on Blu-Ray.
I’m glad, and justified, in importing Gangs of London Season 2 from the UK (bought the Aussie 1st season release). ![]() The gods only know how much I hate DVD, especially since it is still the “disc of choice” for proles in Australia. ![]() |

Another good film fails to get a Blu-Ray here (upcoming release is DVD only).
![]() Couple of older titles, that missed out as well, that we’re a good watch and deserved better: ![]() ![]() It looks like On the Basis of Sex was set for an Aussie release, but then unlike 9 other regions (US, Canada and much of Europe), we got shafted with DVD only. Thanks the gods for Amazon. ![]() |

I think people assume that everyone now has a really big T.V but I would imagine there is a large part of the public (possibly the older generation like my parents) who only own a 40-42 inch TV because that’s all they wanted or could afford at the time and now as the bigger TVs get cheaper they don’t have the desire or possibly the space to upgrade to something bigger. For them DVD probably looks fine on those size screens particularly if they sit as far back from the T.V as my parents do. My first HD TV was a 55inch non-4K one and my daughters DVD’s always looked okay on it, but then when I got a 65 inch 4K model I was shocked how bad DVDs looked upscaled.

Even back then, at 32 inches. I found that upscaled DVD’s just didn’t cut it and looked shite to my eyes (some people would tell me they couldn’t see the difference between SD and HD on TV’s bigger than that). I can also clearly see the gains from HD Foxtel (upscaled to 4K) and Formula 1 & AFL/NRL 4K broadcasts. Back when I first got that Sony in 2011, I then spent a lot of money upgrading my entire DVD collection to Blu-Ray, wherever possible, due to the dissatisfaction with upscaled DVD’ I’m sure if the public were educated on PAL DVD speed-up vs. 24 frames per second Blu-Ray’s playing at the correct speed, more would have made the move to Blu-Ray 10-15 years ago. |
