In all fairness, yes.

But the current pre-order price is 34.99

So 34.99 plus shipping plus import fees plus the difference between the US and CDN dollar would probably end being MORE than Amazon.ca's current pre-order price.

And it'd be the same with Diabolik. Or any other US based website.

Kudos to Bill Lustig & BU for bringing out reference blu-rays of Fulci classics!

This is why you should always pre-order on day 1 so you can benefit from price drops. You can always cancel if it doesn't drop to something you're comfortable paying before release. When I first ordered, it was $49.95, but I knew it would drop to at least $27 at some point before the actual release and I knew .com would automatically adjust it.

If price is such a concern of yours (as it is for me), you should be more mindful of the strategies that can best maximize your dollar.

Yes. Now here's hoping they do the same with Fulci's CONTRABAND. That would be a gore-spattered dream.

I'm sorry but this is simply not true. There have been tons of releases that are clearly re-timed with a strong teal/cyan push for blu-ray.

Midnight Cowboy doesn't have a blanket teal applied to it (like something like Thief did) so I don't think that's the strongest example. When it comes to Thief, the magenta push of the old transfer is as obvious as the pronounced teal push on the new versions and I'm curious to hear from someone who remembers seeing it when it first came out to compare their memories to how it looked then.

I think both DaveyJoe and CineSicko both have merit in what they're saying and one can't really fault either of them. Personally I think grading movies with a strong yellow push is just as annoying and consistently wrong as it is to grade them with a teal push when there wasn't one to begin with (Tree of Wooden Clogs, T2, La religieuse 1966, some of the new Arrow giallo blu rays, among others). Then again, I think stuff like Aliens, The Terminator, and Titanic look much better than their older masters that have way too much pink in them (yeah, all James Cameron movies, which makes it look like a director is just changing his films, but again the cyan tint isn't as pervasive as it is in some of the most obvious cases of revisionism. And it does at least fit these films more than some others).

Agreed.

Just because the blacks are heavier and now has orange and teal pushes doesn't make it better. From the screen caps, NYR has NEVER looked that pushed and I've had A LOT of releases.

I await the release to check for myself.

Much better but three of those screenshots concern me - the shrubs by the river look almost luminescent, the subway is blue/green, and the living room door sure ain’t near white.

^ Look at the dude's shirt collar, it's a much more natural white while the old transfer is far too magenta. The actors have the key lights on them, you can't judge an object in the background for color accuracy, we have no idea what kind of stylized or accidental light might be hitting that door. It's not the subject of the shot. This is the problem with screenshot analysis. When you think a transfer will have a teal push you're going to look for something that looks 'too blue' without the context of how that shot was actually lit.

I agree with you but those three screenshots jumped out at me. Also, look at the river - it looks like a swimming pool in the 4K. I’m sure it’ll look great in motion, and I’m looking forward to watching it, but based on those grabs those are my impressions. Obviously, grabs can be hugely misleading.

What do you mean you can judge the lighting in the background - the white door has a green hue which is not present in the old.

Look at the bushes in comparison one - far too saturated, look at the sky in the building shot, far too teal. The subway shot too teal. Looks like BU decided to go for a modern grade and disregarded any original intention by the DOP. The entire transfer has a MASSIVE saturation and black push, sorry but this film was not shot with a bleach by pass look like Three Kings. Very disappointed.

What the old transfer needed was a slight increase in blacks and an evening out of the skin tones.

According to their website, they're still working on shipping orders from their Arrow sale. So I guess that's why these haven't started shipping yet.

Well gosh darn it that's annoying. Kinda feel guilty about emailing them now. I hope I get this and AHP Vol 2 before I go on vacay early next month

Well this is the first time the film has been scanned from the negatives in 4K, we’ve seen many of these same transfers from that same era that were littered with scanner noise, improperly color timed and had terrible black levels. I would hardly use those transfers a frame of reference, they’re likely completely incorrect. Those screenshots in the remaster finally look correct.

Lmao the shrubs look “luminescent”, no. The older transfer was just washed out as f*ck.

This restoration looks damn incredible.

The black level isn't terrible on the original - it has 100 percent black level in it.

Look over Cosimo Cinieri's left shoulder in the new 4K, the detail has been completely lost by pushing the blacks too much.

Laugh all you want. The shrubs on the left look like they’re luminescent in that grab. Ditto the river. And there’s an undeniable blue push to the subway. I’ve already qualified my observations by saying never 100% trust screenshots. Hopefully it’ll all look fabulous in motion. So, again, you laugh all you want.

Actually, the reason they haven't shipped yet is that they don't have stock yet. Jesse got back to me.

This is the problem, you're using the old master as a reference point. You really shouldn't...
