I'm new to physical media and just getting started.

When buying a 4K Blu-ray, how do I know if the movie has HDR?

I see is that some slipcovers have a little HDR sticker but other 4K Blu-ray discs on Amazon for example don't have that HDR sticker.

I'm looking to get Moana in 4K Blu-ray with HDR but I don't see the HDR sticker on it on Amazon.

Is there a way to tell for certain that a 4K Blu-ray disc has HDR?

As far as I understand it, every 4K Blu-ray movie HAS to have some form of HDR. It's a requirement of the spec.

At the very least, every 4K blu-ray will have the standard HDR10. Beyond that, it gets a little more complicated. There is also HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, but in my experience, finding if a disc has those can be more challenging. (It's often just a tiny logo on the back of the box.) However, sites like this very one can help in identifying which kind of HDR a disc has.

One nice thing is, even the discs that have the more advanced HDR10+ or Dolby Vision all have to have a base layer of standard HDR10. Which means if your equipment doesn't support HDR10+ or DV, it will default to standard HDR10.

To play HDR content, your entire video chain must support it. TV, Blu-ray player, and AVR if you have one.

I can tell you Moana has standard HDR10. Most Disney releases I have seen are the Standard HDR10. They have had a few Dolby Vision ones, but they are rare.

I hope this helps.

I just bought a Polk audio command bar and i was trying to watch the Joker 4K bluray and the audio was cutting in and out. I have it hooked up via HDMI ARC and it can decode DTS and Dolby Digital. I'm not sure if the tv audio needs to be auto or pcm? My player's audio is set to auto, but there is an option for DTS re encode. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Most 4K discs offer HDR, but not all. See, for example, this review for Mayhem on 4K disc:

"RLJE's upscaled UHD has little of interest on offer, then, particularly considering the absence of HDR color enhancement which further reduces any incentive to purchase this release over the 1080p Blu-ray. Without HDR and coming to 4K from a 2K digital intermediate, there's unsurprisingly little difference between the two releases."

" the UHD also forgoes HDR"

https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Mayhe...191414/#Review

I own this 4K disc, bought it on a whim, and it is indeed encoded with just plain old SDR.

I would say that a good 95% of 4k discs include HDR of some sort. Don't go by Amazon's spec lists as they're often wrong.

My mistake. I was not 100% sure on that point. Still, I think it's safe to say if you buy an 4K UHD Disc, chances are pretty good it's gonna have HDR.

I am pretty certain that this is the only 4K disc that I have without HDR.

4K discs having HDR is almost a sure bet and it is typical of my luck to have blind bought the rare title that lacked it. Worse still, I didn't even like the movie.

HDR is not mandatory for UHD disc, just FYI. But if a UHD has HDR then it must carry HDR10.

Pretty much everything has HDR, but it's those rare discs from the smallest indie distributors that don't have it. Cell Block 99, Bad Santa 2, Mayhem, Song to Song, the Italian Suspiria disc, the German Neon Demon disc, those are a few that spring to mind.

How can the big tv manufacturers like Samsung, LG and even Sony get away with selling “HDR” TVs that can barely reach 200 nits on a 2% window in the year 2020? Blows my mind how this is not called out more.

It's been the case since day 1 unfortunately, no-one made a fuss because they were too busy getting a handle on what HDR actually is and does. Not to drag dirty laundry into this thread but when I see experts moaning about how "fake HDR" looks worse on a supermarket special TV than actual SDR does because of the TV's very low contrast and nit count I can only think "well, that's not the content's fault is it?"

Does anyone know any examples of UHD discs that don't come with a Blu-ray copy included?

Ones you get free with a UHD player. I got The Last Jedi this way. They can often pop up on eBay in batches though.

I think I heard the US copy of Seven Worlds One Planet wasn't getting blu-rays of the actual show too while the UK version did. Is that right?

This idea of just 4k uhd disc would have merrit, if just the movie was on the 4k disc, and the partnering blu had the suplaments. Or do the same with documentaries. Episodes on 4k discs, extras on blu disc. A price cut would help too.

- Suspira (As mentioned by Spiderwalk)
- Shaft (2019)
- Blue Planet 2
- Planet Earth 2
- 13 Hours: The Secret Soldiers of Benghazi
- Space Adventure Cobra

And then some of the combo packs have dropped them (despite the individual releases having them)

- It: 2 Film Collection
- Transformers: The Ultimate Five Movie Collection

With all the Disney 4K releases, why no Tron Legacy? I loved it, and it seems like it would be incredible in 4K!

It's live action and it's got nothing to do with their main franchises, ergo they won't touch it with a barge pole.

Has anyone checked out the 4k version of "One Dark Night" on FandangoNow? I'm tempted to buy it for $10 just as a curiosity but searching around I couldn't find any talk of it here on the forum.
