Edit 2: completed a watch of the French released disc transfer of the Theatrical version which initially I was a bit concerned about due to the earlier scenes' bitrate being in the 28-33Mbps average range and lackluster IQ in some scenes but subsequently thought perhaps it was due to the film IQ and lighting itself as outdoor scenes and day for night shots had significantly clearer image quality (however they were still under 40Mbps, hovering more around the 33-36Mbps range).

Guessing it's all the dark scenes that kept the size low relative to other transfers I own, though earlier in the topic saw a bitrate analysis of the Final Cut version which was said to average 67Mbps which seems far higher so not absolutely sure if they share the same encode quality.

I should check caps-a-holic and compare sometime.

I guess I'm glad to see I'm not the only one that experienced audio glitches with this disc. It happened for me a few times towards the end of the film. The sound cuts out for a fraction of a second.

It doesn't close, you can remove the J-card and keep it as just a digipak, I just kinda hold the front flaps in place then slide it between some other digipaks on my shelf, that keeps it closed when not in use.

The bad thing is that I donít see Lionsgate doing anything to rectify any of the sound issues (even the one I brought up that only affects the theatrical cut). I tweeted to their home video department for what little good that will do.

Aren't these related to the MediaTek SOC that chokes on TrueHD and branch points? Lionsgate uses DRM that has junk playlists with branching points to obfuscate the actual movie. It was obviously cracked to be useless to pirates and now affects the consumer with bad MediaTek chips.

The theatrical cut was $6.99 on iTunes, so I bought it. 4K with Dolby Vision and Atmos. It doesn’t have the audio glitch that the disc has at 2:05:49 and it has Willard’s original line when he gets off the boat during the Do Lung Bridge scene.

This will be my go to version despite the sound being Dolby Digital Plus. It’s the only true version of the theatrical cut in 4K.

That requires people putting a little effort into their daily lives. If you haven't noticed that's almost a lost trait. No wonder streaming is so popular: convenience and laziness.

Finally got around to watching this (Theatrical), first time in about 20+ years so it was essentially like first time.

Great movie, loved the slow descent into madness.

One thing I got a little confused on, maybe had a brain fart, but sort of feel like I missed something towards the end when they were at Kurtz's camp...one scene Willard is talking to Kurtz, then next scene he's behind bars and hungry/thirsty, next scene the other dude is decapitated but the 3rd guy is just chilling like he belongs, then next scene Willard narrates that he is free to roam around etc.

What's happening? How many days were they there? How was he expected to assassinate Kurtz anyway?

Random thoughts I know...can't help but think about everything

I also love the irony (if that's the correct use) of things like where the soldiers are mowing down civilians from the helicopter while referring to them as "savages", lol.

I donít think youíre supposed to know. I think it was intentionally unclear to keep you in Willardís state of mind.

Which version is the best to watch for an initial viewing?
Final cut...in TC you don`t have a so called "The French plantation scene".

you did it good...see my answer above

I was watcted AN more than 10 times (TC version at least 3or4 times and Redux version more than 5) and can confirm that "Final cut" is the best version of the movie.

That scene is a big waste of space and is the main reason why the theatrical cut will always be superior. The only useful part of it is that it depicts what happens to Clean's body, which is otherwise glossed over in the TC.

The theatrical cut is perfect as is.

Well yeah, there was absolutely no way to re-integrate just that one scene without the rest of the boring waffle and cheese that goes with it. So we just have to assume his corpse was either tossed overboard or wrapped up and stored in the boat

My Sony UBP X700 hates these discs. Watching 1978 Halloween 4K UHD tomorrow. More than a bit nervous as that's another Lionsgate release.
Just wanted to say that I updated the firmware in my Denon receiver and now the theatrical cut of Apocalypse Now plays perfectly. I haven't tried final cut yet but since that was struggling in a similar manner to theatrical, hopefully that is also fixed. Sadly Redux still freezes in the same place requiring either a fast forward or pressing pause and then play again. But at least I can watch the original cut without issue. Moral of story is (for me anyway): make sure your receiver firmware is up to date.

I’ve had discs stop and freeze and I use a wet wipe for computer screens or camera lenses on the disc and they play fine. I’ve heard 4K discs are more sensitive to any dirt or smudge.

Which Denon receiver do you have? I have the x4300h.
