Exclamation 4K Questions That Don't Deserve Their Own Threads

This thread is for when you want to know the answer to something 4K related, but don't want to make a whole individual thread for it. Or can't make a thread. Or don't want to get roundly mocked.

No question too small! Or too dumb!

I can't remember it older on title. Maybe Lawrence of Arabia and The bridge on the river Kwai

I just tell you it's illegal to 4:3 screen for UltraHD 4K. Must minimum 1:78:1 screen to maximize 2:39:1 screen.

Thank you, Pieter! There's one I'd love to see in 4K too. But don't...don't apply HDR to it, the image data is either there or it isn't at this point...

Ignore my reply, Casablanca was scanned in 4K. I saw Lawrence of Arabia, in your quote. Oops.

ID4 makes perfect sense to tie into the new movie. Hopefully Sony does the same when the new Ghostbusters hits theaters. I could also see them releasing the first two Robert Langdon flicks in time for Inferno. And Paramount's rumored to be prepping the Abrams' Star Trek flicks. I figure we'll get those either when Beyond hits theaters or home video.

But I ain't holding my breath for the entire Harry Potter series when Fantastic Beasts comes out at Thanksgiving.

TVs are 1.78:1, not 2.39:1, and so is the UHD resolution standard, so there is no "maximizing for 2.39:1 screen". 2.39 and 4:3 take up the same portion of pixels on a 1.78 ratio screen, which is the reason 1.78 was chosen as the new TV standard in the first place, so they are equally maximized for 4k TVs.

I don't think that's really what people think of when referring to "older titles". Technically, they are not new releases, but I think they probably mean titles more than like 15 years old, beyond recent memory, and perhaps before the introduction of the DI (digital intermediate). Hancock is older than Star Trek and that's already out so the OP probably thinks of 2009 as still "newer".

I'm fine with waiting as it ultimately means we're going to have a better experience.

Firmware updates will eventually fix all the launch issues, the standards will also be better.

Seems like all the Fox titles will be inevitably re-released with better versions too as they're currently only on 66GB discs.

I can't even find any news in regards to the UK launch of 4k discs, I 'm guessing they're arrive around March/April like it seems to be for France and Germany.

What you don't understand?

You can't crop 4:3 to Ultra Wide (2.4:1), too much of the picture is gone from top and bottom.
But 1.78:1 (16:9) can be cropped to 2.4:1 without worrying about loosing too much of the picture.

Which is directly related to the OP question... old movies are in 4:3 you know.
