Filtered DV List of Titles Released by Studio

Work in progress - information regarding which titles use MEL (10-bit minimal enhancement layer), or FEL (12-bit full enhancement layer) will now be added next to the release year. What the heck exactly are mel and fel? Here's a post that gathers up a lot of nice info - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...8#post16884278

Thanks to some nice input from Geoff as well as forum member Rice -

I can also see this during the demo montage on the Spears & Munsil Benchmark UHD, there's some subtle artfacting on the peacock feather in HDR10 which is gone in both the FEL and MEL DV versions on the disc.

[edit] But given what I've said to you in other threads (including one just today!) about these 2 Mb/s DV layers surely containing *something* more than just metadata, it looks very much like that's incorrect and that such layers really are just MELs after all. The bitrate being constant, as Rice says it is, is another clue that there's nothing else there, i.e. it's not reacting as VBR encoding would to any video information, it's just a fixed 'container' for the metadata.

Why do that and take a couple of precious Mb/s away from the HDR10 is unclear at this time, the dynamic metadata alone takes up a mere fraction of space e.g. https://caps-a-holic.com/c.php?d1=11853&d2=11852&c=4671 (scroll down to the bdinfo, it's only 66 kb/s for the MEL DV layer). But these ~2 Mb/s DV layers are popping up more and more, in fact if we look at the bitrate for the DV extension on Aquaman and 2001:ASO, both from Warners, the DV layers are both 2093 kb/s exactly - that can't be a coincidence. Maybe it's just quicker to encode the MEL DV layer into a constant 2 Mb/s or something? Sony have done it too with Venom, although the DV is 2085 kb/s in that case.

I think that MEL/FEL list of ShePearl's needs updating!

Measuring the nits on the Alita DV layer shows solid 20nit across the whole length. Visually it's a solid grey screen, unchanging. bitrate flat 2Mbitps

On the SP Ryan DV layer, there's ~200nit to 700nit sporadic throughout. visually there's stuff going on. bitrate fluctuates 1Mbit-7Mbit etc
we've been able to identify the layers containing a flat bitrate of ~2Mbps or less usually equates to MEL and those with a higher variable bitrate >2Mbps=FEL. As always I'll continue to provide updates if any more info becomes available that sheds further light on the matter. Currently working on compiling bitrate info for the list with help from Geoff.

Here we have more confirmation the layers hovering around ~2Mbps are MEL - https://forum.blu-ray.com/showthread...8#post16793408

I'm hoping to see Deadpool on a TL disc (first title even?).

If not, it's highly likely that The Martian Extended Edition will feature the first 100GB disc.

Very good news, but I wouldn't get too excited if you think Dolby Vision is going to blow away the HDR10 layer. DV will look better on TVs on the lower end (those that have HDR 'lite') and TVs that haven't been made yet. Those in between (the HDR10 TVs that meet UHD Premium specs) it should look very similar. But for discs it's very good news because eventually we'll upgrade the TVs and then we will notice any improvement (assuming the discs are encoded with dynamic range and color gamut beyond what HDR10 is capable of, which probably won't be the case most times anyway).

I wish Wild would come with a better release in the future with a 100 GB disc. The current release sucks so much.

Dolby Vision for Ultra HD Blu-ray includes a 100% compatible HDR 10-bit video stream playable in all Ultra HD Blu-ray format players.

That's mean that we don't need the LG but we can keep the samsung tv?

It means the UHD disks with Dolby Vision have two layers: an HDR10 layer that can be played on all TVs including the Samsung you mention, plus in addition a Dolby Vision layer that can only be read by Dolby Vision TVs.

@sebishow: I would say yes, get either an LG OLED with Dolby Vision, or the new Vizio P series with Dolby Vision which is much cheaper.

Why do you think Deadpool will be the first Dolby Vision UHD BD?

Silly question, do we need a Dolby Vision UHD BD to play these discs in Dolby Vision?

I understand the TV part. I know that is required.

Yes, a UHD Blu-ray player with Dolby Vision capabilities (i.e., EDR Decoder) is required to play a Dolby Vision UHD BD.

The Dolby Vision base layer on the diagram is SDR.
For UHD Blu-ray, the Dolby Vision base layer must be HDR10.

I don't understand Chinese. I'm wondering if the image below shows the first Dolby Vision UHD BDs.

This image is taken at the Skyworth S9-I OLED TV web page.

The Skyworth S9-I TV was launched recently in China:
. 55S9-I: Y17000 (i.e., $2500)
. 65S9-I: Y30000 (i.e., $4500)

They are compatible with Dolby Vision and HDR10.

I doubt it will be in a separate layer (unless you are using the term differently)

that mean that you only need a TV with HDR10.
End of story....

As mentioned above, it's part of the spec for DV on UHD Blu-ray: it is formed of two layers, the HDR10 base layer and the DV enhancement layer.

It's a shame that Dolby are still trotting out the whole 'SDR/HDR layers' thing when they tout their wares (which will probably lead to plenty of uninformed confusion and assumptions when DV UHD discs finally arrive) but I guess they're not gonna change their tune now.
