WBShop Blade Runner 4K UHD (1982)

Release Date (U.S.): September 5, 2017

First reported by Bill Hunt on June 7, 2017, of the Digital Bits:

Quote:
While we’re talking 4K UHD today, we’ve also now begun to hear from international retail sources that Warner Bros. will be releasing Ridley Scott’s original Blade Runner on 4K Ultra HD later this year, as we’ve been saying for several month now, probably at the same time Blade Runner: 2049 arrives on BD and 4K. As you know, 2017 marks the film’s 35th anniversary. In addition to these reports, Amazon France has now listed the title as coming soon on the format with no street date given. Sources suggest that the release is expected to include at least Blade Runner: The Final Cut (see our review here) in 4K UHD format, with all 3 legacy audio commentary tracks (one with director Ridley Scott, one with Hampton Fancher, David Peoples, Michael Deeley, and Katherine Haber, and one with Syd Mead, Lawrence G. Paul, David L. Snyder, and Douglas Trumbull, Richard Yuricich, and David Dryer) as well as Charles de Lauzirika’s outstanding Dangerous Days: The Making of Blade Runner 214-minute documentary, presented for the first time in full HD on regular Blu-ray. (We would certainly expect a regular Blu-ray “refresh” of the title for the anniversary as well, for those aren’t 4K consumers.)
From Blu-ray.com:

Synopsis: Visually spectacular, intensely action-packed and powerfully prophetic since its debut, Blade Runner returns in Ridley Scott's definitive Final Cut, including extended scenes and never-before-seen special effects. In a signature role as 21st-century detective Rick Deckard, Harrison Ford brings his masculine-yet-vulnerable presence to this stylish noir thriller. In a future of high-tech possibility soured by urban and social decay, Deckard hunts for fugitive, murderous replicates - and is drawn to a mystery woman whose secrets may undermine his soul.

Special Features and Technical Specs:
  • Final Cut introduction by Ridley Scott
  • Audio Commentary by Ridley Scott
  • Dangerous Days: The Making of Blade Runner
  • The Electric Dreamer: Remembering Phillip K. Dick
  • Sacrificial Sheep: The Novels vs. The Film
  • Phillip K. Dick: The Blade Runner Interviews
  • Sign of the Times: Graphic Design
  • Fashion Forward: Wardrobe & Styling
  • Screen Tests: Rachael and Pris
  • The Light that Burns: Remembering Jordan Cronenweth
  • Deleted & Alternate Scenes
  • 1982 Promotional Featurettes
  • Trailers and TV Spots
  • Promoting Dystopia: Rendering the Poster Art
  • Deck-a-Rep: The True Nature of Rick Deckard
  • Nexus Generations: Fans and Filmmakers

The 4K Blu-ray disc of Blade Runner: The Final Cut will feature a Dolby Atmos soundtrack remixed specifically for the home theater environment to place and move audio anywhere in the room, including overhead. To experience Dolby Atmos at home, a Dolby Atmos enabled AV receiver and additional speakers are required, or a Dolby Atmos enabled sound bar; however, Dolby Atmos soundtracks are also fully backward compatible with traditional audio configurations and legacy home entertainment equipment.

Selected quotes from BRC's review posted 8/30/2017 by Michael Reuben:

Quote:
Compared to the dated Blu-ray, Blade Runner's UHD presentation can't help but look better, but it's more than better—it's astonishing.

Quote:
Throughout the film, the UHD's resolution reveals so much detail in the remarkable model work that it almost breaks the illusion of scale.

Quote:
The combination of 4K resolution and HDR encoding highlights numerous fine details that have been there all along but now command new attention.
Quote:
Warner's UHD of the Final Cut brings some of the most influential visuals in movie history to the home theater screen with a focus and intensity unmatched by any but the finest theatrical presentations. It's one of the handful of discs to date that truly delivers on the promises of 4K. Watching Blade Runner on this disc is like seeing the film anew. Everything you remember seeing is there—and more.
Quote:
One could continue noting examples for pages, but the point is that the Final Cut's UHD doesn't just feature a superior picture; it also offers a quantum leap in audio quality . . .

If there was a guess the catalog release contest this would have been my choice. Obvious decision with the sequel coming out. Can't wait to own it!

Excellent news.

The Blu-ray looks wonderful. I can't even fathom how outstanding the 4K will look.

Well, The Final Cut was done in 4K and is Scott's preferred version so it'll probably be the cut that makes the jump. I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult for the studio to go back and rescan the other versions included previously (expect the Workprint due to it's condition) in 4K, instead of upconverting the 2K scans.

Too bad Warner Brothers isn't in the habit of remixing their catalog titles to Dolby Atmos like Sony or Lionsgate... unless Ridley insists on this one.

Hopefully drops before the new movie so my rewatch can be on UHD, but either way I'll get this. I assume it'll be the Final Cut?

It absolutely screams for Atmos. Ridley would supervise if he wanted a remix as he normally does.

Great news, and this disk is going to be reference quality, I can feel it! I adore this film, a visual masterpiece, and I think Warner needs to add Dolby Vision on this disk. That would be awesome if they do, and not just a UHD Dolby Vision stream on VUDU only. I want some great old catalog titles with Dolby Vision, this could be one of the first, fingers crossed.
