The special editions themselves are only 1080p, so for a 4K upgrade they'll go back to the negatives (yay!) but the bad news is that the theatrical negatives were reportedly destroyed to make the special editions (booooo!) so the 4K versions will have special edition cuts. However, these new 4K scans will be free of the garbage digital effects we know from the current special editions!

First and foremost this means that much of the original trilogy will shine through without a dated CGI mask over it. But some modern changes (in the vein of the special editions but less shoddy looking) to fit with the prequels and new trilogy will still likely occur. The lightsaber effects could upgraded to be more in line with sequels, for example. And there are plenty scale model effects shots that need fixes so it's naive to think we'll get a CGI-free original trilogy.

So the 4K original trilogy won't be theatrical editions, but they'll be lightyears ahead of the special editions. Star Wars The Original Trilogy: The Final Cuts 4K.

As for The Last Jedi, I so far like how it looks more than how The Force Awakens looked, so I'm eager to see it (and Rogue One) in UHD/HDR.

Erm...wut? The current video master of the SEs available to us is only 1080p but a 4K restoration of the OT was done several years ago by Lowry. Pablo Helman specifically said that they were "George's latest versions", i.e. just because the negs are reportedly conformed to the 1997 SEs doesn't mean that they can't then slug the 2004/2011 changes into that new scan. The power of non-linear editing.

If only there was some sort of anniversary this year and some kind of brand new 4K format with which they could tie in a release for these new 4K masters. What? Oh.

I wasn't aware that there were changes in 2004 and 2011, nor that a 4K restoration was already completed!

But wait, do you mean even the digital effects were carried over to 4K?

2020 or it'll probably never happen. Until then all we can do is sit tight and speculate.

1997 theatrical re-release. 2004 DVDs. 2011 Blu-rays. Each iteration saw several new changes made, and not for the better.

4K 16-bit restoration was done by Lowry Digital in 2012 and conformed to the latest version. Yes, digital effects were carried over, those which were already part of the 1997 edit and those which were slugged in after the fact to match the latest revision.

I do still think most of the 97 and 04 changes were benign, it's just the few REALLY terrible changes that stick out and should never have been made (honestly none of them should've been made, but most are harmless). But yeah, the 2011 ones were dumb. Pretty much made changes just for the hell of it.

Wow I shouldn't have asked, could've lived the next year or two with some hope.

I meant whether or not we'll get the original versions, no doubt a UHD will happen.

So that is the 4K restoration that Gareth Edwards spoke about last year? I remember reading that and had high hopes for A New Hope to appear in theaters again but no such thing happened unfortunately.

Agreed. I could happily live with the 1997 versions and the 2004s ain't too bad but my God, the 2011 alterations really ARE just Lucas wanking all over it for the sake of it. I'd still buy it in 4K though, so at least all that Lucas spooge will look better than ever!

Correct. The DP also mentioned seeing the restored Empire as well as Star Wars.

Are you kidding? If Guardians and Pirates on UHD were any indication then the same eejit who's neutering all these Disney mixes is still merrily going about their business.

No...there is another!!

I dunno what's worse. Ben Burtt's annoying insistence on dialling down the music to proritise his precious sound effects on the various SW mixes he's presided over, or the gammy-eared cretin at Disney who seems to think that dynamic range is the devil's work.

They need the sound mix to sound good coming out of an iPhone speaker or a car radio, obviously.
