It'll get Actor and Score, nothing else. Movie's too polarizing to win Picture and Phillips was a surprise to even get nominated for Director. If not for 1917 though, I think this could've won Cinematography.

I think its going to win at least three awards. Which ones are debatable. Best actor has the highest odds but you never know. With how many nominations Joker has gotten puts it in a class by itself for a comic book movie (along with The Dark Knight).

Making the Commentary an iTunes exclusive is really dumb.

Or 1917 and Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins.

It may win Best Actor. Thats about it.

best picture is most probably THE IRISHMAN

best director is most probably Martin Scorsese.

And I LOVE the movie. Absolute masterpiece of cinema.
Best Actor and Best Score: Yes, Phoenix and Hildur Guūnadůttir
Best Makeup: Bombshell
Best Wardrobe: Little Women (how many remakes is that?)

No clue, saw a YouTube video of a physical media fan complaining about the exclusive.

Didnít Black Panther just receive seven nominations (including best picture) last year?

I don't know why I keep forgetting Black Panther...duh. I think TDK, BP, and Joker have had the most nominations? I thought Superman was up there but it "only" had four nominations.

If you are looking for him to explain the movie, he doesnt. He wants to keep the meaning to himself for " 10 years" in his words. But it is an alright track.

Just watched this tonight. I love this movie, and had been excited to watch the UHD as I had heard good things about it. Ultimately, while I do think the picture quality is good, I don't think the HDR usage is very good. It has sort of that IMAX Theater look to it, like Nolan's movies, where it's bright and clear, but with thin black levels and shadows. It's not a bad look, exactly. I think it suits the movie well. I just don't think there's much to say in its use of HDR. There were a few scenes where highlights did pop, but they were rare. Usually in darker scenes, like when he's walking by neon lights at night, or when he's in a mostly shadowy room with a bright fluorescent light above him. That being said, I do think Nolan handled highlights better than here with his Batman movies.

So while I think the look does suit the style of the movie, that's not really what I judge when I'm grading the HDR usage. There were very few areas where the movie felt like it was doing something that SDR couldn't do. What it actually did in SDR or not is irrelevant here, I'm purely speaking in comparison to a "reference SDR" benchmark. Also, there were a few scenes where I noticed some particularly bad banding in the corners of the image, where the image was producing a vignette effect. Almost like maybe the vignette effect was added in post, and they used a low bit depth filter to achieve it, making it have banding in HDR. Did anybody else notice this?

So overall, incredible movie, good picture quality, good sound, but below average application of HDR. Those who like what Nolan's movies often look like in HDR (in particular, his more IMAX heavy stuff) will probably like the look of the movie though.

Side note: I tweaked my HDR category naming for below average grades to better reflect how it compares to the SDR baseline.

You got any specific time stamps for the banding? I'll keep an eye out for those.

I'll have to take a look. I might not have the time tonight, but maybe tomorrow, and maybe I can grab some pictures of it too.

I've gotta be honest, that looks like the chroma overshoot of OLED playing up. Will of course check it on mah teevee. And that's the actual disc, yes? Not a stream?

Yep, disc. I've never seen anything like this before. At least not with a UHD disc.

Sounds about right. Unless some wacky settings are activated. LG OLED I assume? I did test my copy and no issues here at all. I've actually only seen chroma overshoot on basic HDR10. Feelsbadman.

Only setting I change with DV is brightness to 49, because at 50 I don't get perfect black levels.

Even though my TV is like totally different I have to do the same thing, with blakk level at 50 then I get the dreaded Dolby grey bars syndrome.

Anyhoo, I took some photos of the Joker UHD on the ZD9 in those same spots (apart from one as there's no corresponding time stamp) and while the photos are hilariously overblown and washed out for exposure because the camera can't do low light stuff for shit, you can plainly see that all that gnarly banding is simply not there, and anything you can see is just the camera doing it because it looks smooth as buttah to me.

Yours:
